      573. Joseph6 Bemis (David5, Phillip4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Joseph1)3503 was born 01 Feb 1758 in Westminster, Worcester, Massachusetts3504,3505, and died 16 Aug 1837 in Dummerston, Windham, Vermont. He married Jemima Stoddard3506,3507 Abt. 1780 in Dummerston, Windham, Vermont. She was born Abt. 1761 in Brattleboro, Windham, Vermont.

Notes for Joseph Bemis:
[Dunster:147] Joseph Bemis, the second child of David and Molly (Dunster) Bemis, enlisted into the Continental service when between 16 and 17 years of age. Wintered at Valley Forge with Washington's Army. He stood guard on night over a house in which General Washington was an inmate. At daybreak, the General came out and said, "Pretty cold morning, isn't it soldier? Do you suppose a little peach brandy would hurt you? Mr. Bemis replied, "I think not." The General returned to the house and sent his servant out with a flask. At another time, while on guard duty, General Washington wished to pass into camp. He presented his gun, and called for the countersigh. General W. told him that he could let him pass; he was one of his officers. Mr. B. replied, "told him he must give the password first. The General then said, "You have a fine gun there, soldier." B. replied, "Guess I can kill an Indian six or eight rods off. Stand out there; you can tell. The General held out his hat and showed the countersign in it, which was obliged to be given in a whisper, or written. As he passed, the General slapped him on the shoulder, and said, "I wish I had a whole regiment of soldiers like you." He married Jemima Stoddard; was a farmer, in Dummerston, Vt. The Vermont Historical Gazetteer tells this Joseph Bemis Sr., story which was also told in the Pavor Household, so Dr. Pavor verifies it.

"Joseph Bemis was in the Continental Service at the age of 17. He wintered at Valley Forge with Washingtons army in 1777. One night he stood on guard over a house in which General Washington was an inmate. At daybreak the General came out and said, "Pretty cold isn't it, soldier? Do you Suppose a little peach brandy would hurt you?" "I think not " replied Bemis. The General sent him the brandy. On another occasion Washington wished to pass into camp where Bemis was on guard. He halted the General, presented his gun and called for the counter sign. "You can let me pass," said Washington, "I am one of the officers." "You have a fine gun there soldier." "Yes" replied Bemis, "Guess I can kill an Indian six or eight rods off. Stand out there; you can tell." The General held out his hat, showing the countersign inside, and was allowed to pass on. As he went by, he slapped Bemis on the shoulder and said, "I wish I had a whole regiment of soldiers like you."

The Joseph Bemis Jr., family moved from Vermont to New York. They may have stopped in Ellisburg on the way, to see the Alcander Dickinson family. Alcanders first wife, Emily Bemis died in 1848. Josephs family settled in Ashford, Cattaraugus County, New York, around 1849.

Josephs son Edwin, whose wife died before 1850, lived in the Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York , area for several years. He appeared on the 1850 census. In 1855 he had been in Ashford for about four years. By 1859 he must have been in Ashford, for he married Chauncey Crossfields widow.

It is still not clear when Josephs wife Abigail died but it was prior to 1870 when he was living alone with Jesse Bemis's family. Joseph Jr. was still living whe the 1880 census was taken in Ashford. At that time he was about 93 years old.

There are many intermarriages in this family - even cases of cousins marrying. The Dickinson brothers mother was Sarah Bemis, probable sister of Joseph Bemis, Sr. Each married a cousin. Elias returned to Vermont from New York to marry a probable daughter of Nathaniel and Polly (Bemis) Attridge. Then George and Alcander returned to marry Joseph Jrs. daughters.
