He married (1) Hannah Frost⁴⁰⁷⁹ 1783 ⁴⁰⁸⁰, daughter of Jonathan Frost and Martha Leland. She was born 1761 in Sherborn, Massachusetts ⁴⁰⁸¹, and died 09 Feb 1785 ⁴⁰⁸². He married (2) Lois Walker⁴⁰⁸² 29 Nov 1785 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts ^4083,⁴⁰⁸⁴, daughter of Thomas Walker and Elizabeth. She was born 20 Dec 1758 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts ⁴⁰⁸⁵, and died 1841 ⁴⁰⁸⁶.

[Draper:76] "He was a soldier in the Rev. Enlisted at the age of 18, and served 3 years. His father was opposed to his enlisting, because he was so young; one day however, while chopping wood near the road, a party of men came along who were going to join the Army at Boston. They told him the news of the Battle of Lexington, and this so increased his ardor to serve his country, that he struck his axe into a stump, "declaring that he would never take it out, till he had struck a blow for the liberty of his country." He joined the party, and reached the Headquarters of the army just before the Battle of Bunker Hill, where he joined Capt. James Lewis's Company (his sister Martha's father-in-law.) Col. E. Hales Regiment, which marched June 29, 1777 to reinforce the Garrison at Ticonderoga. In Sept. 1777 Capt. James Lewis raised another Comp. in the neighborhood of Marlborough, in which James Bemis was also a private."

James Bemis, from Weston, Mass., settled in Dublin in 1793, where he died December 15, 1832, aged seventy-five years. He married first Hannah Frost, of Marlboro, by whom he had one son, Jonathan. He next married Lois Walker, of Sudbury. Mass., in 1786. His children were Hannah, James, Lois, Thomas, Josiah, Betsey, Eli and Mercy. James Bemis was a soldier of the Revolution, enlisting when a boy of eighteen, and reached headquarters just before the battle of Bunker Hill. His son Thomas, born in 1793, married first Sally Williams, and second Anna Knight, of Sudbury, Mass. His children were Sally, Elbridge G., Elizabeth J., George W., and Samuel Dana. He died at Jaffrey.

"James Bemis, from Weston, Mass., b. Sept. 7, 1757; d. in D(ublin) (now H(arrisville)). Dec. 15, 1832.
He settled in D(ublin), 1793, on lot 17, range 9, in what is now Chesham. He m., 1st, 1783, Hannah Frost of Marlborough, dau. of Jonathan and Hannah (Leland) Frost. He m., 2nd, 1786, Lois Walker of Sudbury,
Mass. Mr. Bemis was a soldier of the Revolution. He enlisted at the age of 18, and served three years. In Watertown, June 23, 1778, "To the Honor Council for the State of Massachusetts Bay, I have mustered the nine months men and there names are as follows" - James Barrett, Muster Master.

First off; "my suggestion" that Eli and Roxanna were married is partially backed by the fact that on the 'marriage certification' , that I got a copy of from City Hall in Keene, of the marriage of Roxanna to Jason Phelps, reads as follows:

"State of New Hampshire
Cheshire SS
I hereby certify that Mr Jason Phelps of Lowell, Mass and Mrs Roxana Bemis of Marlborough, NH were lawfully joined in marriage by me this twenty-third day of April A.D.1838.

Attest: A A Livermore
Recorded by George W. Sturtevant, Town Clerk"

The "SS" after Cheshire was written with the old "esses" which resemble the English pound sign.

The idea that Jason and Roxana (new spelling as per Marriage cert. above) got married came to me from a book titled "One Branch Of Edward Phelps Descendants" , which was just published by my wife's uncle, John Edward Phelps, of Springfield, Mass, who has been researching Phelps ancestry for many years. It states as follows:

"M2. 23 Apr, 1838, Wid. Roxanna McCollester- BEMIS, Keene, N. H., he of Lowell, Mass., by Rev. A.A. Livermore, at Keene, N.H. VR d/o Samuel McCollester and wife Silence Belknap, of Marlborough, N. H.: (Roxana) b. 15 Mar. 1807, Dublin, N. H. ; d. 04 Mar. 1840. Bur. at Marlborough, N. H. (Prob. with first husband Eli Bemis.)"
I have no idea what the "VR" stands for above where I would have said "dau. of" . John lists as reference to above as "History of Marlborough, NH , p. 575, 20-111.

I will double check that next time I get to Marlborough, Dublin, or Concord. If I remember correctly, the Census shows Jason and family living not too far from the lot you gave for Eli in Chesham.
