      923. Emory6 Bemis (Jonas5, Abraham4, John3, John2, Joseph1)4835 was born 30 Jun 1801 in Lincoln, Middlesex, Massachusetts4836,4837, and died 28 Nov 1882. He married Susanna Bemis Pickering4838 28 Sep 1830 in Waltham, Middlesex, Massachusetts4839,4840, daughter of George Pickering and Mary Bemis. She was born 18 Sep 1807 in Waltham, Middlesex, Massachusetts4841,4842, and died 10 Mar 1887 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts4843.

Notes for Emory Bemis:
[Draper:102-4] Of Emery Bemis the Cambridge Mass. Tribune of Dec. 1st 1882, said: -- "A Boston merchant for more than fifty years, for twenty-five years an honored citizen of Cambridge, where his last days were spent. Such is the meager outline of a large life. Yet I deem it only fitting that one who has long known and loved him should add a word to this brief record of earthly years. There are many to whom this and the simple notice of death in another column will bring a shock of sad surprise. Not that death at an age so advanced was unlooked for or singular, but to those who knew him well, and were wont to meet him at his place of business, and in the streets of the neighboring city, he may well have seemed, up to the time of his enforced retirement from the scenes of active life, some six years since, the very embodiment of vitality and manly energy. It was impossible to look into the face of this man and not believe in him at once and completely, nor was such confidence ever misplaced. I have known and have had close business relations with many men, and can say with absolute truth, with neither exaggeration nor the fulsome eulogy that gushes so easily when death has closed a life record, that I never met his superior, scarcely his equal, for perfect integrity and unsullied and undoubted honor. As to a generosity, ever too free for his means, let the poor, to whom he was a providence; let the families of our soldiers absent in our defense, tell the story. For the last six or seven years Mr. Bemis has been confined at home, a victim of progressive paralysis, yet, despite the weakness and irritability consequent on such a complaint, his mind remained clear almost to the end.

Why weep ye, then, for him, who having won
The bound of man's appointed years, at last,
Life's blessing all enjoyed, life's labors done,
Serenely to his final rest has passed;
While the soft memory of his virtues yet
Lingers like twilight hues when the bright sun is set?'"

LINES WRITTEN TO MRS. SUSAN P. BEMIS
By George Francis Train
On the Death of Her Husband, Emery Bemis, Esq., of
      Cambridge, Mass.

                              MADISON SQUARE, New York
                              Thanksgiving Day, 1882

Dear Aunt Susan:

Yes! sad indeed Thanksgiving Day
To you? As winter, cold and drear,
As autumn leaves drop on the way,
Your life-long love has left you here!
For six decades so true to you
As you to him were always true!
Kind father, husband, and true
To friends', still friendly to the end!
('Tis two and forty years ago,
Do you remember, in the snow
You called for me when school was done,
At burning of the Lexington?)
Through all these years a friend more kind
Than "Uncle Em." 'tis hard to find.
(Through life's changes on land and sea
He had the kindest love for me.)
Long lifed our race (though desolate)
There still remains three out of eight!
How many generations gone
Yet Homestead still survives life storm?
(Hundred seventy years ago
Ancestral deeds were signed, you know.)
Death-stricken with Time's occult hand
For long he gazed on "Shadow Land!"
(That life-death none can understand?)
He lived to love and loved to live
And shared all that he had to give!
For four-score years (deny who can)
He never injured any man?
His joyous laugh and gentle words
Were pure as song of summer birds!
His "Honor Bright" is free from stain,
As is his character and name!
I wish that all my countrymen
Were "Simon Pure" like "Uncle Em!"
With kind regards these words I send
To souvenir my kind old friend.
