"The Hon Stephen C. Bemis was one of the best known men in Western Mass. When fourteen years old, he went to Chicopee Mass, and entered his uncle's store, where he showed such ability, that in four years he was made a partner; four years later he bought his uncle's share in the business. He later removed to Springfield, Mass., and became the Pioneer Hardware Manufacturer of the Connecticut Valley. He early and always, took a lively interest in politics and public affairs, holding many positions of Honor and Trust. He was postmaster of Chicopee in 1830; then Tax-Collector in Springfield, Selectman and a member of the Legislature. He was nominated for Congress, also candidate for the Lieutenant-Governorship. Several times delegate to Democratic National Conventions, and Mayor of Springfield in 1861-2. In this last position during the early years of the Rebellion, he bent all his energies and patriotism, which were great, to the furthering of the National Cause. A "War democrat", his whole soul, mind and heart were for the union. Soon after the expiration of his Mayoralty term, his health declined, in consequence of cares and overwork."
