Daniel Smiley with a friend named Fenton, soon after his m. started for the then far west, Wisconsin, leaving his bride with her father, and bought land one and a half miles from the present city of Janesville, which then contained but one house. He got a house and some furniture ready, and in Feby. 1837. Lieut. Charles Bemus brought his dau. and Mrs. Fenton to Wis. making the whole trip with horses and sleigh. They had a rough time, but remained on the farm till 1841, and then removed to Exter, Wis., and from thence to Albany and settled on a farm. Mr. Smiley was a member of the Legislature of Wis. and held a number of other offices. (p.49-50)
