  Notes for Hamilton Henry Edminster:
[The Edminster Family In America]

Hamilton Henry, born 7 June 1843 in Cornish. Nothing further is known of him by that name. However, it seems probable that records of John H. Edminster refer to the same man. John H. lived with the Daniel G. Deming family in Cornish in 1850, when 6; with the Hiram Sargent family in Cornish in 1860 when 17. Apparently he was orphaned before 1850. He was a soldier in the Civil War, serving in Co. B, 3rd Regt. New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He resided at Sunapee, New Hampshire when he enlisted on 13 August 1861 as a Private. His service record gives his age as 18 which checks with the age of Hamilton Henry. He became Corporal 18 October 1862, Sergeant on 6 April 1864 and was mustered out at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia on 23 August 1864 (54). He later received an invalid pension on account of rheumatism and heart disease and his pension records reveal most all we know of his later life. He married, first Lottee E. Shoales (or Sholes) in 1869 at Delavan, Wisconsin. They were divorced at Chicago, 14 July 1882 (?), apparently had no children. He married, second, 25 October 1884, at Chicago, Ida M. Shepherd, born 8 April 1865 at Keswick, New Brunswick. They lived at Chicago but later separated. He was a sewing machine solicitor, was 5'7" tall, dark complexion, brown hair and gray eyes. He was listed in Chicago city directories from 1867 to 1917 at 12 different addresses. He died 1 February 1919 at Chicago.

Notes for Phillip Henry Edminster:
[The Edminster Family In America]

Philip Henry Edminster (Zebedee2-1), born 31 July 1819 at Cornish, New Hampshire, son of Zebedee, Jr. and Tirzah (York). He graduated from Castleton, Vermont Medical School in 1842 and practiced medicine in Newfane, Vermont beginning in 1844. He married 26 February 1845, Mary Lovell Shafter of Townshend, Vermont, born 1824. She was an aunt of General Shafter of Spanish American War fame.

Philip Henry died 28 July 1856 at Newfane. His residence there, near the museum, was still in good repair in 1956. He is buried in the cemetery across the tracks from the railroad station. Soon after his death, his widow and three children sailed around the Horn to California where some of her family had recently settled in Sonoma County, near Petaluma, north of San Francisco. This move established the largest branch of Zebedee's descendents and is probably the next most populous clan of the family in this country (most populous is the Wisconsin clan descended from Noah of Maine). Mary Lovell died 9 April 1892, is buried at Petaluma (91).

(Much of the information on the descendents of Philip Henry in California I have obtained from conversations and correspondence with his granddaughters Adelia, Jessie Marie, and Juanita between 1950 and 1963).

Notes for Asaph Bemis Child:
[Genealogy of the Child, Childs and Childe Families; Of the Past and Present in the United States and Canada, from 1630 to 1881:159-160]

Soon after the birth of Asaph Bemis Child, his parents moved into Bethel, Vt., then comparatively new and wild, where he led a truly pioneer life. Asaph Bemis grew to be a stalwart boy by the exercise of his muscular powers in helping to bring into culture the new home. He came to be a power, ere he had reached the age of twenty-one, in clearing the farm and sustaining the household. At an early day the elements of a strong mind, and a robust constitution, began to be developed. While his hands were industriously and efficiently employed in the field, his leisure hours were spent in reading and study, till his knowledge of the primary branches of education was sufficient to qualify him to teach a common school. For several winters, while in his minority, he taught school, and returned to work on his father's farm in the summer. After reaching his majority, he spent two winters at the Academy in Randolph, Vt., boarding with his uncle, Judge Chase, Chief Justice of the State of Vermont; working for his board. So faithful and efficient was he, that his uncle declared he accomplished more than any other laborer on the farm, and that he was so studious he kept his standing in his class. Such was the force of character, and the unflagging mental application exhibited at this period, forwshadowing what the future would be in attainments and efficiency.

Having passed his twenty-second year, and acquired such knowledge as his limited means would allow, he commenced the study of medicine, and attended a course of medical lectures at Dartmouth College, N. H. Afterwards he attended a medical course in Boston, Mass., when he returned to Bethel, Vt., and read and practiced with Dr. Alfred Page of that town, and gained much favor among the people for skill and urbanity. To complete his medical studies he went to Burlington, Vt., and graduated, receiving his medical diploma from that institution. His thoroughness as a student cannot be questioned. But he was not satisfied with the medical practice. He went to Boston and connected himself with the office of Messrs. Ellis & Dana, leading dentists in that city. For two years he industriously applied himself, and became a skilled dentist. He then opened an office of his own, and proved himself to be one of the most popular dentists of the city. Naturally of a speculative turn of mind, he began at this period to write and publish articles on questions of public interest. His first dissertation was a treatise on the "Care and Preservation of the Teeth." These literary efforts led to the publication of a monthly magazine called The Athenaeum. He was much interested in the subject of education, and for some time was an active member of the Public School committee in Boston. He finally became much interested in the new philosophies and spiritualistic manifestations, so called. In support of these he was very earnest, and is thought to have made many converts.

The development of his philosophies is before the public, and the fruits will be judged of variously, as the opinions of men approximate to or diverge from his own.
