1739. Rev. Varenes7 Bemis (Timothy6, Timothy5, John4, John3, John2, Joseph1)7985,7986 was born 09 Dec 1802 in Marlborough, Cheshire, New Hampshire7987,7988, and died 1856. He married Mary Adelia Simonds7989 18 Jan 1831 in Lebanon, Madison, New York7990, daughter of Luther Simonds and Asenath Lamb. She was born 18 Apr 1812 in Sturbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts7990,7991.

Notes for Rev. Varenes Bemis:
Thanks to the dedication of the scribe of the First Baptist Church of Lebanon, Madison County, New York and the devoted efforts of the Monument Chapter (Daughters of the American Revolution), Minneapolis, Minnesota, a rare glimpse into the life of Reverend Varanes Bemis and his wife, Mary Simonds has emerged.

Shortly after his twenty-third birthday, Brother Bemis made his way from Malone, Franklin County, New York to Lebanon, Madison County, New York. Lebanon is southwest of Utica and southeast of Syracuse, about 215 miles southwest of Malone. Nearly two months elapsed between March 18 when he left his church in Malone and May 13, 1826, when he was received into the church in Lebanon.

Church records further note that on November 12 of the same year, fourteen-year-old Mary A. Simonds was baptized and received into the fellowship of the same Baptist Church. Mary’s father had passed away when she was one year old and her mother later remarried to Simeon Shepard.

Brother Bemis was mentioned on several occasions when he was sent to represent the members of the congregation on various missions between 1826 and 1827. In May 1827 a vote was taken that "Brother Varanes Bemis should have a license to preach the Gospel Believing that he has a preaching gift." Thus his lifelong avocation began.

At that same meeting, he was asked to "labor with brother Isaac Niles". Apparently, Brother Niles had recently gained the attention of church leaders. Two months later, in July, Varanes had continued his effort with Isaac Niles, but apparently to no avail. The leaders voted to "withdraw the hand of fellowship from Brother Isaac Niles, because of his drinking to excess". Deacon S. Ostrom, Brother Bemis and G. G. Weeks were appointed to a committee to write a letter of Excommunication and deliver it to Brother Niles.

A year later, on May 25, 1828, the church received a request from Brother Bemis for a letter of recommendation to join another Baptist church. By July 24, 1828, he had united with the Church at Newfield, Tompkins County, New York, about 68 miles to the southwest, towards Watkins Glen.

Next we find Reverend Bemis in Almond, Allegany County, New York. As John S. Minard wrote "In 1830, Elder Bemis (who came to Almond as a missionary, preaching at the schoolhouse) became pastor for one year and a half; he was followed by Elder Randall, and he by Elder Bemis who became pastor a second time."

Colonel Thomas Draper reports that Rev. Bemis united in marriage with Mary Simonds on January 18, 1831. Although no mention is made in the church records of any marriage, this fact is supported by a vote on February 12, 1831, to provide to "May A. Simmoms (sic) (now Mary A. Beemus)" a letter of Recommendation. She had just passed her eighteenth birthday.

Later that year, on August 13, notation is made of receiving a letter "from the church in Almond, Allegany Co., N. Y. notifying us that Mary A. Bemis had united with that church." Reverend and Mrs. Bemis began their family and continued living in Almond through 1840. During this time, four sons were born to the couple: Henry Varanes, Simeon S., Samuel M. (who died in 1837, age 17 months) and Edward (Edwin) Coleman. Simeon S. died August 27, 1841 at the age of 7. This probably prompted the family to move to their next stop, sixteen miles west at Angelica, Allegany County, where, "In August, 1841, Rev. V. Bemis began his labors, and he was the first pastor to continue for more than a year. About this time the state convention aided the church by appropriating to it $100 per year. After Rev. Bemis' four years there was a vacancy of nearly a year...." Later, Rev. Bemis would serve as pastor of the Baptist Church in Friendship, Allegany County, New York; about 11 miles further west. He was also mentioned as serving a church in Andover, Allegany County, although it is unclear the order of that stop.

Finally, in 1855, the New York Census records the family living in Harmony, Chautauqua County, New York. Four of his seven sons were listed in the household: Coleman E. (b. October 14, 1838), George A. (b. April 17, 1843) and Luther N. (b. abt 1846) were born in Allegany County. However his youngest son, Dwight L. (b. October 17, 1851) was born in Chautauqua County, indicating a move between 1846 and 1852. When Varanes' father, Timothy Bemis, died in 1848, Varanes was said to be living in Franklinville, Cattaraugus County, New York. The family has not been located in the 1850 U. S. Census.

Reverend Bemis probably passed away between 1855 and 1860 as his widow Mary may be found living with her oldest son, Henry Bemis, 28 (b. October 11, 1832), a brewer in Chicago, Illinois, along with two other sons, Coleman and Dwight.

Finally, Mary married William Hales, himself a widower, on December 4, 1862. She was living in North Amherst, Ohio in 1896, but it is unclear when she passed away.
