Steve, Since these are from two different sources and the info does not "cross", there is no way I can POSITIVELY confirm this. The Drake book only states that she [Laura Bemis] was the daughter of Cheney & Angia (Langdon) Bemis. The Howe book lists Cheney as the son of Cheney & Martha (Howe) Bemis. It does not continue beyond him. The dates do suggest this, also from the other reference in the Howe book on p. 370 where Lois Ada Bemis, daughter of Cheney & Annie I. (Langdon) Bemis, b. in Spencer (as was Laura) 21 Feb, 1856. Laura was born 21 Feb 1857 so they were probably sisters. As to Cheney's connection to the elder Cheney, there is no proof positive. Notes for Caroline Howe Bemis:
There is conflicting information between (i) Vital Records of Spencer (16) and The History of Spencer (8) that both indicate she was born October 1, 1823 and was a twin of her brother Tilly, and (ii) Draper(157) who contends Caroline was born October 1, 1830. The latter (ii) is supported by the census records for Spencer (1850) that show Caroline, age 19, in the household of Cheney Bemis, and by information that her gravestone indicates she was born in 1830.

[Tower:V1:114-115] ALVIN BEMIS was born in Spencer, Massachusetts, October 16, 1839, and entered the service September 23, 1861, at Readville, Massachusetts, as a private in a Company I, twenty-seventh regiment Massachusetts volunteers, and was discharged at Newbern, North Carolina, April 23, 1863, for disability. His first battle was at Roanoke Island. Subsequently he participated in the battles of Fort Mason and Newbern, after which battle he was put upon General Burnside's Dispatch and Headquarters boat and remain there until about the time Burnside went to the Army of the Potomac. For about a month he was confined in the hospital at Portsmouth, North Carolina. His intimate comrades in the service were John Marsh of Spencer, Horace Pike, Wm. Lamb, Frederick Young, and Wm. King of Charlton, A. S. Howe of Salem, and Slayton N. Dean of North Brookfield. The most important events in his service he considers were the capture of Newbern, North Carolina, and laying outside Hatteras Inlet, three days and nights with signals of distress flying, before any help ventured near. He was on the Alice Price dispatch when it took the prisoners from Fort Mason who were paroled at their homes. He was at Elizabeth City when Commander Tatnel set fire to his fleet and swam ashore, and was constantly on the move about Pamlico and Albermarle Sounds and their inlets. After returning to his regiment he went to Swansboro and assisted in destroying the salt works there, and he was kept actively at work until he was sent, wait in the fall, to the hospital.
