Regarding name: The family Bible records identify her as Lovina Adeline Bemis and her tombstone plus the tombstones of some of her children show her as "L.A. Carter" which suggest Lovina Adeline was her given and legal name. It appears, however, that she preferred and was commonly known as "Adeline."

MARRIAGE: The Bemis Family Bible Register of Marriages records Lovina Adeline and Wallace Carter were married 24 Nov 1857.

Residence: Written family history from notes by Myrtis Iona Searles, granddaughter of Lovina Adeline Bemis Carter: "Adeline Lovina [names reversed from family Bible Register of Births ] Bemis Carter was born Nov. 26, 1866 [Clearly wrong, should be Oct. 29, 1835] ib Cambridge , Ohio. She died Oct. 10, 1921. When she was 14 years old [calculated 1949], she moved with her parents to Outagamie Co., WI [1850 Federal census enumerates the Abner Bemis family in Vineland Twp., Winnebago Co., WI] and lived there several years before moving to Elroy, Wis. When she was 18 years old she taught school. Her salary was ten shillings a month and she boarded around in the homes of the families in the district. She married Wallace Carter at the age of 21 years."

Occupation: Handwritten contract in in possession of John Weger, Elroy, WI.

It is agreed between School District No. Eight in the Town of Vinneland Adlade Beamus is a qualified teacher of District No. Eight, that the said Adlade Beamus is to teach the common school of said District for the term of five months for the sum of Ten Shillings per week and for such services properly rendered the said distrist is to pay to the said Adlade Beamus the amount that may be due according to this contract on or before the Seventh Day of Oct./53.

Apr 1867 moved to Elroy, Juneau Co. WI per notes of Grand daughter Myrtis and purchased the J ames Milne farm for $800 down payment. "They lived there eight years, then lost the farm. ( He never was well after he got out of the Army.)"
Abt 1875, "Then they moved to Millard's Prairie to what is now known as the Dell Thompson far m. They lived there several years and then bought what is now known as Bierwandt Farm wher e they lived for two years.Then they moved to the Kate Snyder Farm. The marriage ceremony un iting Myrta and Willis Searles took place on this farm January 7, 1882."

Residence: Federal Census 1880, Wonewoc Twp., Juneau Co., WI. Carter. Wallace, 47, farmer, b . NY; Adeline, 44, OH; MJ. 18

DEATH: According to Floyd Matteson, "Uncle Carter died on Thanksgiving Day after cutting th e head off a turkey." Notes among family records in possession of John Weger, Elroy, WI conc ur with this scenario stating "Wallace Carter went to the barn to do chores on the morning o f November 28, 1901 (Thanksgiving Day), and was found unconsciouis on the barn floor. He die d a few hours later of apoplexy. He was a very fleshy man."

Military: Co. G., 3rd Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry, Civil War. "Wallace enlisted in the Civi l War in 1863 and served until the end of the war in 1865" per the handwritten record of hi s grand daughter, Myrtis.

BURIAL: Carter Family lot, Millard's Prairie Cemetery, Vernon Co., WI--just a few miles outsi de Elroy, WI.

MARRIAGE: The marriage record states, "By what ceremony consumated? Legal." The person pron ouncing the marriage: John Dy, Esq.

Tombstone: Little George's tombstone lies flat on the ground in the Bemis family plot alon g side his two small aunties who preceded him in death by only weeks. The stone is similar i n style to the one for the young girls. The inscription says, " George R/son of/WW & LA Cart er/died
Apr 8, 1863/E. 4 years, 8 months, 21 days" Below is the quote, "Dear George thou has left us /Thy loss is deply [yes--spelled with only one 'e'] felt/But 'tis God that hath/Befeft us/H e can all our sorrow heal." Photo available from Sherry Martin.

In the posession of John Weger, Elroy Wi are b oth the deed to this lot as well as a record for payment of $30 received from Mrs. W.M. Searl es for perpetual care of the lot dated 28 Jun 1945. The deed is signed by President C.F. Mutc h, Treasurer Luella Kilmer and Secretary Paul H. Steffen in the presence of witnesses W. B. M illler and L.H. Stahler and notarized by W.B. Miller.
Along with the cemetery and perpetual care deeds is a business card from Sparta Marble Works , J.0. Brooks, Proprietor--the address being Main St., First Door West of Engine House, Spart a Wis.
