Notes for Hiram Kimball: HIRAM HARVEY KIMBALL Buffalo County Nebraska Hiram Harvey Kimball and Maria Malissa "Rye" Phillips Kimball moved from Janesville, Rock CO Wisconsin to Buffalo County, Nebraska in 1878.(1) They were 35 and 32 years old respectively at that time. They may have come with her parents Hubbard and Lois Bemis Phillips and her brother, Charles L Phillips, as all three families were living in the same household in Kearney, Nebraska in June, 1880 when the Federal Census was taken. Their mode of travel from Wisconsin to Nebraska is not known; it could have been by either wagon or railroad. Both the Union Pacific and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroads served Kearney by 1878. The Kimball and Phillips families financial situation must have been poor in 1880 as all three families, ten individuals ranging in age from 3 years to 63 years, were living in the same rented house.(2) Hiram Kimball's occupation was blacksmith, Hubbard Phillips occupation was farmer, and Charles L Phillips occupation was printer.(3) By June 4, 1882 Hiram and "Rye" had moved to Sweetwater, Beaver Township, Buffalo County as that is the birth date and place of their youngest daughter, Ruth Arabelle. November 11, 1882 Hiram Kimball signed Union Pacific Railroad contract No 54043 for the purchase of 80 acres of land, being the North half of the North East quarter section 9, Beaver Township. The purchase price was $200.(4) This land lies one mile directly south of Sweetwater. Sweetwater, Nebraska is a small village along the Burlington railroad in extreme northern Buffalo County. The north boundary of the village is the Sherman County line. In April, 1883 Hiram Kimball was serving as the Director of school district #68, known as the Sweetwater school. He took the annual school census that year; a copy of the document shows his handwriting.(5) The school building was located one half mile west of their farm.(6) In 1884 Hiram Kimball signed the annual school census as a Justice of the Peace. The school census taken April 14, 1885 is the last one on which the Kimball family appears in Buffalo County. In 1884 Hiram was still working as a blacksmith, now in Sweetwater where he was also the justice of the peace.(7) On the state census dated June, 1885 Hiram listed his occupation as miller. The Sweetwater Milling Company owned a large frame mill building on the Sweetwater creek one half mile north of the Kimball farm. The attached agricultural schedule lists no crops raised in 1884 due to hail. That may be the reason Hiram is working in the flour mill and also the reason they left Buffalo County. The agricultural schedule lists only 25 acres of the Kimball farm as tilled; the remaining 55 acres were unimproved, probably unbroken prairie. Value of the farm was listed as $800, value of machinery as $60 and value of livestock as $195. No horses or mules were listed. They owned 6 cows, 3 swine, 12 poultry. The only item produced in 1884 was 100 dozen eggs.(6) In March, 1885 Hiram and Maria signed two mortgages, one in the amount of $300, the other for $30. This was probably necessitated by the 1884 crop failure. November 24, 1885 they both signed a deed, selling the farm to William Cuddy for $400. The mortgage was to be paid by the purchaser, making the total sale price $700. The Kimball family moved to Byron, Thayer County, Nebraska, in March, 1886.(9) March 1st is the usual moving date for farmers., Arah C. Kimball, Hiram's brother, was already living in Byron.
