Mrs. Veranus Perry Descendant of Soldier Who Served at Valley Forge.

Riceville, Ia. - Mrs. Veranus Perry, whose grandfather served with Washington at Valley Forge thruout the winter of 1777, recently observed her ninety-second birthday anniversary here.

Four Generations of her family were present at the observance. She was first, the others were represented by her daughter, granddaughter, and great grandson.

Husband Kin to Famous Commodores

Her husband died five years ago. His father was a cousin to Commodore Perry who won fame in the war of 1812 at the battle of Lake Erie and to his brother, Commodore Matthew Perry, who brought about the opening of Japanese ports to the rest of the world.

She is a great granddaughter of William Martin, whose two sons served in the Revolutionary army. Her grandfather, Thomas Nebold Martin, was on of those youths and he was a fifer in Washington's army which trained at Vallet Forge.

Was Born in Vermont

As Alma Martin, she was born in Bakersfield, Vermont, one of 10 sons and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Phineas Martin. Her mother was also one of 10 children. She was married to Veranus Sept. 26, 1860.

She still treasures the first crochet hook she owned, one which her father made from a large sewing needle. She continues expert at needlework and recently completed a quilt of 1,964 blocks, and has two others in process of piecing. Her heirlooms include a plate with which her mother began housekeeping more than a century ago.

The following is taken from the Obituary for Alma Pamela Perry. I (Chris Woodhouse) do not know what paper or the date. I was given the clipping from my grand mother Martha Marie (Anderson) Husted.

Funeral services for Mrs. Perry were held Friday afternoon, 1:30 at the home and 2 o'clock at the Methodist church. The services were in charge of Pastor E.P. Stone, assisted by the Rev. E. J. Jeffery, Darlington, who preached the sermon and read the following sketch of Mrs. Perry's life: Alma Pamela Martin, daughter of Phineas and Roselba Martin, was born in East Sheldon, St. Albans County, Vermont, October 23, 1843. She came with her parents to Springfield, Dane County, Wisconsin, at the age of ten years, and with the exception of 3 1/2 years spent in Riceville, Iowa, she has always lived near Lodi. On September 26, 1860, she was married to Varanes M. Perry and together they lived happily for nearly 69 years. Ten children blessed this home, all of whom are living except the oldest daughter, Mrs. Abbie C. Ranney, who passed away in 1910 and a son, Lewis M. Perry, who passed away in 1930. Surviving are Orrin V. Perry, Fayette, Iowa; Alvin D. Perry, Riceville, Iowa; Anna J. Burlingame, Lodi, Wisconsin; Oliver W. Perry, Alta Vista, Iowa; Ella A. Burt, Lodi, Wisconsin; Edwin P. Perry, Charles City, Iowa; Charles Wyman Perry, Spooner, Wisconsin, and Miss Belva Perry, Lodi Wisconsin. All of the eight children are here. There are 33 Grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren. Mrs. Perry passed away Tuesday June 24, 1941, after an illness of only four days, at the age of 97 years and eight months. The beloved Alma Martin Perry was a granddaughter of Thomas Nebold Martin, who spent the terrible winter of 1777 and 1778 in camp at Valley Forge with General George Washington. Thomas was a fifer in General Washington's brigade at Valley Forge and was wounded in the battle of Rhode Island. When Colonel Ethan Allen died February 12 1779, Thomas Martin played the fife at his funeral. Mrs. Perry was the great-granddaughter of Nathan Record, the French soldier who came over with LaFayette to help America win the war with England. The attainment of her grand age is attributed to the legacy of pioneer longevity, traceable through all the branches of her family and her own capacity for hardy, zestful living as a Wisconsin pioneer. A brother and five sisters all reached remarkable ages. Her brother, Nathaniel Martin, was 92 years old at the time of his death; her oldest sister, Mrs. Jane Stebbins, was 94 years and 7 months; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Martin and Mrs. Ella Jencks, were 88, another sister, Mrs. Anna Chase, was 87 and Mrs. Esther Hall was 82. It is also a worthy fact that Mrs. Perry was on of five sisters and one brother, all of whom lived to celebrate their golden wedding anniversaries. The story of Mrs. Perry's life is a veritable chapter from the story of Wisconsin as a state. She traveled from Vermont to this state's harbor of Milwaukee by treacherous boatride, and reached the interior by wagon. Here she attended the early settlers' schools and churches and mastered the fine arts of sewing, crocheting, eyelet embroidering, spinning, quilting, gardening, home millinery designing and many others. She had Indians for neighbors, drove both oxen and horses and frequently found it necessary to detour for bears and shoot wild bob-cats and snakes in self protection. Five of the ten Perry children were born in a log cabin. Mrs. Perry was a passenger on the first Madison-Milwaukee railroad train. Although her life was a busy one to be sure, she always found time to help a neighbor in time of need or sickness. "Always Forward," was her motto, but after traveling 7,000 miles by automobile and enjoying it she changed that motto to "Forward, but faster," thus keeping up with the times. Her spirit was ever progressive, her outlook always contagiously sunny and her character sterling to the end of her brilliant, long and well spent life. Mrs. Perry has been beloved as the grand old lady of her community for many years, and although she will be greatly missed, she will be dearly remembered by her many inspired friends and a devoted family. One day at eve when the tide was low, She slipped her mooring and sailed away, With no response or a friendly hail Of kindred craft on a busy day. Through the purple shadows that darkly trail O'er the ebbing tide of the unknown sea, She fared away with the dip of a sail Of a lonely voyager passing away To mystic Isles, where at anchor lay The crafts of those who'd sailed before O'er the unknown sea to the unknown shore. The few who watched her sail away, Will miss her craft from the busy bay, Some friendly barques that were anchored near, Some loving souls that her heart held dear, In silent sorrow will shed a tear. But she has peacefully furled her sail In moorings sheltered from storms and gale, And is greeting the friends who have sailed before O'er the unknown sea to the unknown shore. Relatives attending from away besides the sons and their wives were-Miss Harriet Ranney, Fayette, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Nat V. Ranney, Rochester, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Varanes M. Perry, Randalia, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. James Perry and son, Russell Wayne, McIntyre, Iowa; Mrs. Celia Perry Bass, Mrs. Ruth Perry Webb, Mrs. Earl Perry, Mrs. Lloyd Perry and Mrs. Harvey Perry, all of Minneapolis; Miss Emmor Stebbins and Mrs. Carlos Stebbins, Waunakee; Irwin Chase, Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hillier, Brownsdale, Minnesota. Others attending were Mrs. Louise Kingsley Parke, Madison; Joseph Gillette and sister, Mrs. Blanche Roberts, and Miss Alma Seston of Mazomanie. Pall bearers were five grandsons, Nat V. Ranney, Lloyd Burt, Varanes, James and Harold Perry, and Sidney Brereton, the latter the husband of grand-daughter, Peral Burlingame Brenton. Three Hymns "The Lily of the Valley," "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "We'll say Goodnight Here, but Good Good Morning up There," were beautifully sung by Mrs. Mary Steele and Mrs. Dora Smith, with Mrs. Daisy Bissell at the organ. "The Lily of the Valley" was sung at the funeral of Mrs. Perry's mother nearly sixty years ago. Card of Thanks We wish to thank all neighbors and friends who have contributed in any way to the comfort and happiness of our mother throughout these many years-The Perry Family.

Marriage Notes for Varanes Perry and Alma Martin:
Married 63 Years, Lodi Couple In Celebration

Lodi - Mr. and Mrs. V. Perry celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary on September 26. They were married in Springfield, near Madison, by a justice of the peace in 1860. They lived on their farm near Madison for thirty-one years.

The couple witnessed the arrival of the first passenger train in Madison and also took advantage of the first excursion to Devil's Lake. In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Perry moved to Lodi and have lived on their farm in the edge of town ever since. Until two years ago Mr. Perry did all of the work on four acres of plow land on their five acre farm.

To Mr. and Mrs. Perry were born ten children, six boys and four girls, all of whom were born at the farm at Springfield. All of the children are living except the oldest, Mrs. Abbie Ranney, who died just before the golden wedding day. The youngest, Miss Belva, is at home, caring for her parents. They have thirty-one grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren living.

Born in East

Mrs. Perry, nee Miss Alma Martin was born near Bakersfield, Franklin county, Vermont, on October 23, 1843, and came to Wisconsin with her parents in 1853. Varanes Perry was born in Stockholm, St. Lawrence county, New York, on September 8, 1837. He came to Milwaukee by way of the Great Lakes when he was seven years old.

The Perrys as a family are very healthy, hard workers, never using liquor or tobacco in any form, a fact which Mr. Perry believes has added years to his life line.

Though their paths have not always been strewn with roses, they have pulled together faithfully all these years, meeting the difficulties that come to pioneers couorageously. Each day finds them greater sweethearts than they ever were.

(sidebar) In Journal Family

Mr. and Mrs. Perry belong to the "State Journal Family" now, as they did in the days of the paper's infancy, when it was published by Mr. Atwood, with the office over Huntly and Wooten's grocery, and was carried by stage to the post offices along the way, from Madison to Sauk once or twice a week.

He married Sabrina Bailey14076 16 Aug 1862 in Waukau, Winnebago, Wisconsin14077, daughter of Samuel Bailey and Malissa (______). She was born 1844 in Geneseo, Livingston, New York14078,14079,14080, and died 24 Apr 1931 in Estherville, Emmet, Iowa14081,14082.

Notes for Henry V. Strong:
Information from Pension file of Henry V. Strong

Henry V. Strong was born at LaGrange, LaGrange County, Indiana and is described as 5 feet 8 ½ inches high, light complexion, hazel eyes, auburn hair, and was a farmer by occupation when he enlisted in the Union Army . Henry was the son of William D. and Eunice (Bemis) Strong .

On August 16th, 1862, Henry, then a resident of Berlin, Wisconsin, married Miss Sabrina Bailey, the daughter of Samuel and Malissa R. Bailey. Sabrina was born in Geneseo, Livingston County, New York. The service was performed by Reverend Thomas Peep of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Waukau, Winnebago County, Wisconsin .

Thirteen days later, on August 29, 1862, he enlisted at Berlin, Wisconsin to serve a maximum of three years and was sworn in as a Private that same day at Indianapolis, Indiana. He was assigned to Company G, 5th Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteers.

On the Muster Roll of Company G, for the months of May & June 1863, he is reported, "Absent sick at Washington DC since May 3, 1863." He was subsequently transferred to Company B, about July 1864 .

On June 13, 1865, Henry, a Private, Company B, 5th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry requested a discharge from service due to wounds received in the service of the United States. His wounds were described as: "a gunshot wound of the thigh which has continued to disable him, causing sharp pain in thigh and great weakness in leg that renders him unable to walk or stand but little." This request was made at the Harvey U.S.A. General Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin . He was subsequently discharged from the hospital on June 26, 1865 and from the service on June 28, 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin.

"This soldier was wounded on May 3, 1863 in battle at Fredericksburg, Virginia and is discharged on his own urgent request."

By 1870, Henry and Sabrina had moved to St. Ansgar, Mitchell County, Iowa, where the census taker noted that he was a farmer with personal property of only $100. She was keeping house. Still there on May 8, 1876, Henry, now 39 years of age, filed a Declaration for Invalid Army Pension .

Although Henry and Sabrina have not been located in the 1880 Census, they do appear in the 1885 Census of Iowa, then residing in High Lake Township, Emmet County, Iowa . Two children are listed with the family at that time: a ten-year-old girl named Nettie May Strong and a four-year-old boy named Leon W. Wenner.

Henry passed away on December 25, 1893, from a "disease contracted in the service." His death certificate confirms his date of death and indicates the cause of death as heart disease. He died at his home in High Lake Township, Emmet County, Iowa at the age of 54 and was buried on December 27, 1893 in Estherville .

Several notations of his passing have been found in various newspapers:
