G. O. STONE DIES FRIDAY, FAYETTE

Second Death in Year in Pioneer Family-Former Mayor of Fayette-Services by Lifelong Friend

FAYETTE--G. O. Stone, 76, died at 10:00 a.m. Friday at his home in Fayette. His last illness was of only a few weeks duration. He sustained a bad fall in his home several weeks ago. He visited Rochester and went through the clinic, but no particular malady was found. He was brought to the West Union Hospital two weeks ago Saturday, and from there taken to Rochester again, and at this time the physicians their stated that he had suffered a stroke since his first visit.

Mr. Stone's was the second death in a family of four children of early pioneer parents of Fayette county, the first death among the four children in three-quarters of a century having been when the oldest, Mrs. Juliette Bender of Fayette, died June 13 last at the age of 89. The surviving members of that family circle are William H. Stone, 88, and Mrs. Janette Adams, 84, both of Waucoma.

Lifelong Friend Conducts Funeral

By a remarkable coincidence, the funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. from the home in Fayette by Mr. Stone's neighbor, the Rev, John P. Clyde, Fayette. Mr. Stone and Mr. Clyde were born in pioneer families within a mile of each other in Eden township, not far from the same date, and grew up in the same neighborhood and attended the same country school as boys.

Student of History, Economics

Dr. Clyde spoke of Mr. Stone as a member of the first generation of the first pioneer families, characterized by their heartihood, their independence, their love of liberty. He also referred to his deep appreciation of the beauty of nature which made it appropriate that "Trees" should be one of the songs at the funeral services; of his love of the best in literature and music; of his large library of historical and economic volumes; and that is sharing the social theories of William Larrabee and Henry George.

Served as Fayette Mayor

Gerald Oliver Stone, son of Oliver and Mary E. Stone, was born Dec. 4 29, 1864, in Eden township. He attended country school, a business school at Decorah, and Upper Iowa university. The spent some years in teaching and travel. Most of his life was spent on the family homestead in Eden township, from which he moved in 1916 to the home he bought in Fayette. He had served as mayor of Fayette, and shared in his quiet way in the life of the college campus, and in the religious life of the community.

He was married June 22, 1893, to Allie Goodman. The widow survives him, as do three daughters; Geneva, Mrs. Roy M. Richards; Elizabeth, Mrs. Rex Tario, Lead, S. D.; Lenora, Mrs. M. A. Moser. Mrs. Richards and Mrs. Moser reside near Waucoma. There are three grandsons, Gerald and Lester Richards and Bruce Oliver Moser.

  Notes for Jessie Evalina Goodman:
[Received from Jessie Cook]

I loved going to my Great Grandma Jessie's farm to visit. The water came from a handpump out in the yard...best cold drinking water ever! Uncle Earl never did put plumbing in the house and no one really seemed to mind! The outhouse was out back past the wood shed! I will always miss being able to go there....I loved that place, my fondest memories as a child was when everyone would gather on the weekend for family time.
My mom told me that Jessie was a school teacher for about 40 years...that Uncle Earl would take her by horse and buggy to nearby towns. Was also told she was artistic.
