Ira J. Tomkins was born in Taylorville, Iowa, November 12, 1859, and he died in Oelwein on January 31, 1914. He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Bemis and to the union was born thirteen children, ten of whom are still living, three having passed to the great beyond. He passed most of his life in Iowa, excepting the last two years when he resided in Kansas where he was engaged in farming. He came to Oelwein a short time ago and made his home with his son Fred. Death came to him, suddenly on the morning of January 31, without warning, and it was a terrible shock to his children and friends.

His beloved wife passed to her reward three years ago. He was an honest hard working man and had the respect and confidence of those with whom he was associated. He leaves to mourn his demise ten children - Mrs. L. A. Blacke, Volga City; Fred, Archie, Henry, Edward and Mrs. Grace Davis, Oelwein; Mrs. M. E. Miller and Blanche, of Medicine, Kansas; Elmer and Lee of Volga City, and other relatives and a host of friends.

Short services were held from the home of his son, Fred, in Oelwein on Monday forenoon, conducted by Rev. C. L. McKin_ and the body was taken to Elgin where the last services and interment occurred. Sympathy is expressed to the bereaved family in the loss they sustained.
