ELWYN HARTLEY BEMIS, of Northboro, Worcester county, Massachusetts, is from the old Bemis family of this county, the members of which outrank almost, if not quite, those of any other name there. He was born at Northboro, June 1, 1851, son of Elijah and Julia A. (Newton) Bemis...

Elwyn H. Bemis, of this notice, was educated at Northboro, Massachusetts, commenced farm work for others and later began for himself on the old home place. In politics he is a Republican and has been overseer of the poor. He was a charter member of the Grange and is a member of the Baptist Church. He married Martha Arabella Todd, of Rowley, daughter of J. Scott and Lucy (Hale) Todd. Their children are as follows: Edith Justina, born at Northboro, November 16, 1879, married E. C. Blair, 1899, and they have one son, Malcom E., born June 22, 1900. Ralph lives at Worcester and Lucy at Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Elmer T., born December 7, 1894.

Edward Higginson Williams, B.A., A.C., E.M., Sc.D., LL.D., of Woodstock, Vt., mining engineer, geologist, elected a resident member 6 February 1904 and made a life member 28 January 1919 was born at Proctorsville, Vt., 30 September 1849, the son of Edward Higginson and Cornelia Bailey (Pratt) Williams, and died at Woodstock 2 November 1933.

He traced his descent from Robert(1) Williams, a native of Norwich, England, an emigrant to New England in the Rose, with his first wife, Elizabeth Stratton, and several children, who settled at Roxbury, Mass., and was admitted a freeman 2 May 1638, through Capt. Isaac(2), born in 1638, whose first wife was Martha Parks, Lieut. Isaac(3), 1661-1739, Capt. William(4) of Mansfield, Conn., who married Experience Williams, Capt. Phinehas(5), 1734-1820, a settler in 1774 at Woodstock, Vt., an officer in the Revolution, who married Mary Field, Hon. Jesse(6), 1761-1842, of Woodstock, an officer in the Revolution, whose wife was Hannah Palmer, Hon. Norman(7), 1791-1868, A.B. (University of Vermont, 1810), register of probate, secretary of state for Vermont, State senator, clerk of the courts of Windsor County for more than twenty-five years, selectman, founder of the Vermont Medical College, in which he was a professor of medical jurisprudence and dean of the faculty, member of the commission to rebuild the State capitol, who married Mary Ann Wentworth Brown, and Edwin Higginson(8), his father, M.D. (Medical College of Woodstock, 1846), physician, civil engineer, superintendent of railroads, a knight of the North Star by creation by the King of Sweden, who was born at Woodstock 1 June 1824 and married there, 15 June 1848, Cornelia Bailey Pratt, who was born at Woodstock 16 January 1827 and died at Rosemont, Pa., 16 July 1889, the daughter of John A. and Sarah (Bailey) Pratt.

He attended the public schools and was graduated at the Woodstock High School in 1865 and at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., in 1868. He entered Yale University and received there the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1872. Serious trouble with his eyes forced him to give up for a while all studies, but in 1873 he bagan postgraduate studies at Lehigh University, taking there the degree of Analytical Chemist in 1875 and that of Engineer of Mines in 1876. In 1912 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Science from the University of Vermont and in 1915 that of Doctor of Laws from Lehigh University. While at Lehigh University he founded the Tau Beta Pi Society, a national honorary engineering fraternity.

He bagan work in 1872 as a surveyor with the Pennsylvania Railway engineering corps, but gave up his position and took up his studies at Lehigh University the following year. From 1876 to 1879 he was engaged as an engineer in private mining corporations, and then, for a year, was a superintendent of mines at Danville, Pa., resigning to accept the position of assistant mining engineer of the Canada Steel Company at Johnstown, Pa., in charge of mine examinations outsite the State of Pennsylvania and of exploring work in Canada, Michigan, and Virginia. In 1881 he was appointed professor of mining and geology at Lehigh University, a position which he held until 1902, when he was made lecturer on mining and geology. After his retirement from teaching he moved to Andover, but in 1910 settled at Woodstock.

He contributed many papers on mining and education to scientific magazines and journals, besides publishing articles on history and geology. He published a "Manual of Lithology," 1886, 1896, and a "Vigintennial Record of the Class of 1868, Phillips Academy, Andover," 1888, and edited Atkinson's "Gases met within Coal Mines," second edition, 1886, and "Coal and Metal Miners' Pocket Book," 1890.

He was well-versed in Greek, Latin, French, German, Egyptian, Coptic, Sanskrit, and Hebrew. He learned to read and speak Welsh.

He was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Vermont Society of Engineers, and a fellow of the American Philosophical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Geological Society of America. He belonged also to the Moravian Historical Society, the Wyoming Valley Historical Society, and the Vermont Historical Society. A stamp collector of international reputation, he was a member of the American Philatelic Society.

He has served as a trustee and president of the Norman Williams Public Library Corporation, a director of the Woodstock Aqueduct Company, the Woodstock Electric Company, and the Woodstock Hotel Company, vice president and president of the Lehigh Alumni Association, and a member of the School Committee of Woodstock.

He married at Roxbury (Boston), 19 June 1883, Jennie Olive Bemis, daughter of Augustine Samuel and Ophelia (Leland) Bemis, who, with eight children, Mrs. N. Grier Parke (Olive Bemis Williams), Mrs. Charles Worthington Fowler (Cornelia Williams), Mrs. Seymour Ballard (Elizabeth Williams), Edward Higginson Williams, B.A. (Williams, 1913), C.E. (Lehigh University, 1915), of Woodstock, Norman Williams, B.A. (University of Vermont, 1916), Amory Leland Williams, S.B. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1920, as of 1918), M. Arch (ib. 1921), Wentworth Williams, B.A. (Williams, 1920, as of 1919), assistant professor of English at Boston University, and Lawrence Augustine Peter Williams, B.A. (Lehigh University, 1923), survives him.
