Denton Record Chronicle August 13, 1908 Section Hand Killed C.Renfro Struck by Falling Door and Fatally Injured Chas. Renfro, a section hand was struck in the head by a bunker door that fell off a car Thursday afternoon and sustained injuries that caused his death that night at 9 o'clock. Renfro with the other section hands was working in Hickory bottom when the approach of a freight train caused them to step back from the track. As the train passed, a bunker door on top of one of the refrigerator cars slipped loose and was hurled off the train, striking Renfro on the head. Renfro's head was badly crushed and a collar bone broken. The door which struck Renfro weighed about 90 pounds and was supposed to have been securely fastened to the top of the car. It is used to close an aperture through which ice is passed into the car. The train at the time of the accident was coming down grade and was running at a high rate of speed. Companions of Renfro say that he was standing at least twenty feet from the track when the accident occurred. The injured man was picked up and brought to town on a hand car and was later taken to his home on Hickory street. His death occurred without his having regained consciousness. Renfro was about 28 years old and had lived here for several years. His father lives about three and a half miles southeast of town. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and until a month ago carried a life insurance policy in that order.
