Notes for J
EAN-BAPTISTE-DION DERBONNE:
Jean-Baptiste Derbanne: probalby born at Mobile in 1710, and baptised there 26 July 1710, "son of Derbanne and his Indian slave". It is clear from later records, particularly the Derbanne succession, that his son was significantly older than the remaining children (listed as 24 in 1734). Whether his mother was Jeanne de la Grand Terre or an earlier wife is not known. The story of his marriage is a storied one in Louisiana history, for he eloped with the daughter of the Commandant at the Spanish Post of Los Adaes, Victoria Maria de Gonzal Gonzales (b1721), daughter of Jose Maria Gonzales and Gertrude de la Cerda, on 8 April 1736, after Mass at the Spanish Post. It was due to this and other contacts and interrelationships between the two settlements that a flourishing trade and intercourse grew, in which the Derbanne family participated extensively. Jean -Baptste Derbanne lived on after 1752, but died before 1766.

St. Denis the father was one of Louisiana's most intrepid explorers, and founder of the Post of Natchitoches in 1714. He later became Commandant of the Post (1719), a position he retained until his death in 1744. (For more detail, see Ross Phares' Cavalier in the Wilderness). St Denis the son spent his early career in the service of France in the colonial army, ataining the rank of full lieutenant by 1759. Shortly afterwards he retired to this plantation near Natchitoches. there was no issue from his marriage, which had united two familes who had known each other for nearly two centuries.

She was born August 01, 1735 in Pointe Coupee Parish, LA. (PCP-1, 2), and died 1798 in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Notes for P
IERRE DERBONNE:
Pierre, the youngest child of the family, was emancipated in 1750 by his tutor and brother-in-law, Francois Manne. This was shortly before the church ceremony for his marriage, and it is likely that he was drawn to Pointe Coupee by the Manne Family, who had removed there following their daughter's marriage. Pierre Derbane seems to have been the family member who inherited many of his father's qualities, for by 1775, having moved back to Natchitoches after some years in Pointe Coupee, the Spanish census accorded him 18 slaves (only four families possessed more), and by 1790, the twilight of his life, he had become the wealthiest planter in the area, with 39 slaves.

It is possible that Louis Derbanne married a second time, in 1799, to one Catherine Brosset (only the index of this record remains). It does not appear that this couple had issue. In 1820 Derbanne held 20 slaves, and the census lists only him and his wife.
