It is interesting to note that at the succession of Jean Baptiste Derbanne, none of his children were able to sign their name, though their forbears had done so for the preceding five generations! The succession was a small one, and each heir received something over $400.

Notes for JEAN-BAPTISTE DERBONNE:
Jean-Baptiste Derbanne (b 1753, Pointe Coupee) m 17 Nov 1778 in Pointe Coupee to Therese LaCour, natural daughter of Perine LaCour, widow of Joseph Roy dit Chatelleraut. (Jean Pierre LeDoux represented the groom's father). In 1779, he had accompanied the Spanish official and explorer, Athanaze de Mezieres on one of his expeditions into Texas to trade with the Indians. It is this Derbanne who is the progenitor of the Opelousas branch of the Derbanne family. He had removed there as early as 1785, as he appears on the militia list of the district in that year. It is probable that he followed his mother-in-law to that region. He additionally could have been associated with Francois Manne on his large cattle farm. Unfortunately, the 1788 census of the area does not list him separately. In the 1810 census, the Widow Jean Baptiste "Dearbonne" (sic) is listed with three young sons and one daughter of marriageable age, as well as two slaves. Interestingly, she is listed in the same area as Michel Prudhomme, Jr. (a Michel Prudhomme married Sidonie Derbanne 1802), Pierre Carriere (an Ursin Carriere Married Emelie Derbanne c1815, and Sylvain Saunier (a Melite Sonnier married Michel Derbanne c1827).
