Riley was born c1814 in Mississippi. He married an Eliza Matthews (gv) born c1816. They left Perry County between 1850 and 1860 and went to Franklinton, Washington Parish Louisiana with sister-in-law Margaret Matthews. They were listed in the 1850 census of Perry County MS in household #248. In 1859 they were listed among the membership of the M.E. Church of Mill Pond circuit, Calcasieu Parish.

Daughter Harriett met and married Nathaniel Curtis. Nathaniel is listed on the 1850 St. Helena Parish census. Ben Riley Curtis, their son, stated he was born in Livingston Parish. St. Helena and Livingston Parish border and Washington is one Parish to the east, all in the same area, east of Baton Rouge.

Both families appear on the 1860 Calcasieu Parish census, Calcasieu being in southwesten Louisiana (Lake Charles), bordering Texas (Beaumont). Eliza Francis Curtis migrated to Missouri with an aunt and uncle, and Ben Riley Curtis establised a sizeable rice growing business in the Beaumont, Texas area.
