Many GREGGS MIGRATED TO & FROM SOUTHERN states around OHIO & INDIANA & TO MISSOURI. The GRANDPARENT he was named for, HENRY GREGG1 was born c.1820 in FAYETTE COUNTY, KY. & died c.1901 near there Lex, Ky. HE IS THE OLDEST *VERIFIED DECENDANT of our GREGGs. He was married 3 times. Wife #2- Martha is our family branch. It's 'rumored' his father was J. W GREGG; S/O the QUAKER- SAMUEL. His MOTHER is rumored to have been, first name M?/Marcella? Speculation of her SURNAME GIVES US JAMES, JANES, JOHNS, JONES, EVEN JOHNSON. FROM 1930's many GREGGS lived in the SCOTT COUNTY, KY area. Some fought in the REVOLUTIONARY WAR & some were kin to MATTHEW JOUET (ARTIST) & to the sea captain- Tallifero Craig. Many including POLLY CRAIG were at CRAIG'S STATION then BRYANT STATION & were among the earliest settlers in LEXINGTON, KY. from 1779- 1820's. HENRY GREGG2's NAME represents his parent's surnames- HENRY & GREGG. His father JOSEPH GREGG at one time held the title esquire & was a district judge in Wilmore, KY. Strong Christian convictions he stubbornly held onto may have contributed to his death. **MARIE'S FAMILY has surnames of BOHN, BOHNE? KEIFFER on her PATERNAL side. LALJER, LALYER, LAYER, ALTMAYER, ALTEMEIER, SPECHE, SPEICHIE NAMES on her MATERNAL side. WE HAVE TRACED BACK TO PETER LAJER & JOHN BOHN1 only. MARIE SPEICHE is supposed to be Peter's mother. Ship list name a sponsor- MARTIN BITTO. Some think Peter is part of Christope LALIER's FRENCH family. Peter & Theresia met after he left France & moved to Austria. PETER LAJER & THERESIA ALTEMEIER B c.1854 & c.1855 ARRIVED IN BALTIMORE 1903 with children- Anna E, Johanne & Peter Jr. According to ship records last residence was CSAKAD- from the port- BREMEN, GERMANY. JOHN BOHN IS RUMORED TO BE FROM THE SAME VILLAGE. JOHN & PETER LAJER JR's BIRTH PLACE IS TEMOSWAR (AUSTRIA HUNGARY)ON DEATH CERT. THE LAYERS lived in the CINCINNATI area of OHIO. JOHN BOHN2 arrived in 1904 & he & ANNA LALJER married & settled in Hamilton. Some believe he paid passage for her family. Other BOHN names we have are those of his PARENTS, JOHN BOHN1 & wife- BARBRA KEEFER. Names are all we have. ANTON BOHN & STEPHAN BOHN'S names were on ship records for same date as John's passage. JOHN BOHN worked as a shoelast/shoemaker & later a carpenter in Northern, KY. & spoke several dialics.   Henry Gregg of Scott County, Ky's family back to many great-grand parents. Henry was born Sept, 1902 and his father was Esq Joseph Gregg who was married to Mary Frances Henry. They lived most of their lives in Scott Co, Ky. Joseph's father's parentage is our big family mystery and not comfirmed.

  THIS IS MY MOTHER AND MY FATHER- Henry and Marie Gregg in Scott County, Ky. This was taken on her 21st birthday. She was 15 when they married. Some say she was only 14. Mom was a very beautiful woman and dad loved her very much. They were married for 53 years. They had seven living children and 17 grandchildren. We all miss them very much and will never stop missing them. Thoughts and memories of them always tug at my heart strings.

  circa 1895- This was my grandfather at a young age. He was a very intelligent man. Carried the title of Squire and was a district judge at the time of his death. He was strong in his faith and morals. He was a fine man we are very proud of. My only regret is that he passed on before I was born and I never knew him.

  This is Henry Gregg2's parents. Grandfather, Joseph Gregg lost his leg in an accident. He also lost an eye in a separate hunting. Grandmother, Mary Frances was killed by a hit and run auto accident in Indiana. A week later her sister was killed in Kentucky in a similar accident.

  JO WAS MY FIRST COUSIN. We will miss her much. This is Jo doing what she loved so much. The term she used about others being remembered after they passed away was- Those worthy of being remembered. AND JO CERTAINLY IS WORTHY OF BEING REMEMBERED. Jo, with her brilliant research for Scott County added so much to our lives with the family history she found about our ancestors. The sense of pride given to us from the history she uncovered will make better persons of those now living and those yet to be born. That is what I told her in the last conversation we had just ten days before she passed away. Her words about our missing grandfather, Henry Gregg1- was that " He will turn up somewhere". She talked of her illness and said these words to me, " My faith has no holes in it and I know when Jesus died and went to Heaven that God sent him back as the great comforter in place of his Son to comfort us in times like this. She also told me she was going to buried in the Raven Creek Cemetery in Harrison Co, Ky. with all the rest of the Greggs. She loved family so much that she and her husband Jake had come all the way from California after retirement to live where her roots were.

• Jack Jouett's Home-My Ky Ancestor- Aug 2004 (303 KB)
  Jack and Sallie had 12 children. Their son or nephew William who was married to Ann Faulkoner was my ancestor. One of their 2 daughters was my ancestor who mar James Henry who was my great great grandfather. Info in Woodford County, Versailles, Ky. files is said to state that William was cut out of their will and contact with family was severed by his mother because she didn't like the woman he married. All researchers may not agree with this. One of his relatives was the famous Kentucky artist Matthew Jouett. I was told by one researcher that Wm was a cousin to Matthew. The Jouett house can be seen in the summer and is open to the public. It is just a few miles outside of Versailles, Ky. in Woodford County.   This is a brochure from the Jack Jouett landmark & it tells of his important ride during the war. Jack is known to some genealogists because of it as the 2nd Paul Revere. There is a photo of Matthew Jouett the artist here. Some of the males in my family bare some resemblance to Matthew.

  This is a beautiful view of the old & new parts of the city. My mother's Uncles, Pete & John Layer/Lajier, brothers of Anna Layer Bohn were born in Temoswar. There are many different spellings. Their parents Peter & Theresea (Altemeier) Lajier were from the Elsas, Lorraine area. They arrived in Cincinnati in 1903. Peter Sr died a few months later. Theresia remained in Ohio & Northern Ky till her death several years later. Thanks Jodie McKim.

• James s/o Henry Gregg 2-Aug 3, 1935- Aug 17 1995 (22 KB)
  Jim was the son of Henry and Marie Gregg and one of my four brothers. He died the same year our father did. This classic convertible car was his prized possession. Rumor was that he sold it to the Continental Inn in Lexington and it was the one in their lounges a few years back. He collected antiques as a hobby. He really loved collecting antiques. He was beaming that wonderful, rare smile of his the day I took this photo. Jim was brilliant and talented and very good to us younger girls. He did everything he could to make things more fun for us on holidays. At easter he would get baby chicks and baby ducks and special candy. He helped us so many times in life. He is the one that helped me get my driver's license and the one who took me to Frankfort for legal papers after my first husband passed away. He could paint and draw like a professional and had an eye for antiques and searching for them was one of his favorite things. He played the piano by ear but like a professional. He had impeccable taste in furniture and was very wise about many things. His favorite person in the family was our sister Brenda who ran a close second to our mother whom he loved devotedly. Brenda and her husband Tommy spent many hours with Jim and they were the best of friends. He knew he could rely on them for anything. He was devoted to family more than anything in life and never got over the death of our mother. He died too soon from diabetes and heart problems and we miss him very much. He was brilliant and died too young.

  Grandmother died in Lexington, Ky. in 1947. She was about 62 when she died with many medical problems. She was an elegant lady with silver hair down to her waist. Her family remembers she was talented and did wonderful needlework and was a brilliant cook. She was from the Elsass, Lorraine area of France along the border that is now part of Hungary or Romania due to the changing of political boundaries in treaties over the years.

  My grandmother, Mary Frances Henry Gregg married Jess Brooks after grandfather, Joseph Gregg died in 1933. This is she and Jess with some of her children. Most names are on the photo. I met Jess who was my step-grandfather and a very nice man but sadly I never met my grandfather, Joseph Gregg who died before I was born.

Her husband Henry Gregg1 was born in 1820 in Fay, Co, Ky. She was the widow of Reason Field before her marriage to Henry Gregg1. Henry was married to wife1 Penelope Gregg (widow of George Gregg)in 1842 before he married Martha wife2. MARTHA AND HENRY GREGG had several children together- one was my grandfather Joseph Gregg b. 1859 in Scott Co, Ky. Martha divorced Henry. He married wife3 Florida Goddard about 1880. All three were widows. EACH MARRIAGE TOOK PLACE IN SHELBY CO. OR SHELBYVILLE, KY.

  MY FATHER- Henry Gregg2 is the little boy on the far right. This is the only photo I ever saw of my father as a child. Joseph and Mary Frances are in the center of the photo. This was their cabin home in Scott County, Ky. Notice the musical instruments. Joseph played the accordion and several of the children played instruments. Zola sang in church. Joseph faithfully made sure the family had prayer daily before each meal and they were in church anytime the doors were open. They went to the Presbyterian church near Midway, Ky.

  Mom told us this photo was taken on her 21st birthday. She was wearing her best dress and jewelry. Mom was so elegant when she was young. She was so pretty and loved to laugh. She was admired and loved by many. Not just for her physical beauty but for her inner beauty. She used to tell us if we can't say something nice about someone not to say anything. Because we never walked in their shoes and didn't know what they had endured in their life. She would say that we should never feel sorry for ourselves because no matter how bad things were there would be someone who had it worse and we should be thankful for what we have. She used to get letters from so many friends when I was young. She cherished them and kept them in a special box and she would read them over and over.

  Henry was one of my older brothers and he died way too soon. He had a face like an angel and a disposition like one. He was one of the best people who ever walked this earth. His father Henry Gregg2 out-lived this son. Henry Jr. died almost a year after our mother died in 1988. He fought honorably in Korea during the last part of the war. He earned a purple heart for acts of bravery.

  Hidey was adopted from the Animal Shelter. She is a Blue Heeler and the smartest dog I ever owned. I have taught her many tricks and she is a gentle, sweet and devoted dog. She amazes everyone with her intelligence. Most people think we should put her on the Pet Star Show after they see her do tricks. She follows me everywhere I go and won't let me out of her sight.

  This farm was owned by Thomas J. Carson at one time. The photo was taken in 1898 of this farmhouse on the Dixianna Farm. We would like to know what connection Henry Gregg1 had with the SIMMS FAMILY in LEX, KY OR SOMEONE ELSE WHO EITHER LIVED THERE OR WORKED THERE. RUMOR IS HENRY WAS BORN ON A FARM OUT RUSSELL CAVE & IRON WORKS IN FAY. CO, KY. just outside LEX. KY. AND IT WAS THE OLD SIMMS PLACE. HENRY was born BETWEEN 1812 and 1820. A newspaper account OF HIS OBIT in JAN. 1901 figures him as being born 1820 but some family members say he was older putting his birth perhaps before 1820? This farm was a Thoroughbred horse farm I believe since existence and is located near where Russell Cave and the Iron Works Road intersect. I read it is believed from info I found at the Lexington library that the Harrison family may have built one of the first dwellings on it before 1840.
