Notes for JOHN
"LACKLAND" PLANTAGENET:
John was King John I, King of England. Acceded on May 27, 1199 at Westminster Abbey. He reigned from May 27, 1199 at Westminster Abbey until his death in 1216. In 1206, with the blessings of John, the English Bishops chose an English primate, who in turn was not in favor with Pope Innocent III. In retaliation, the Pope consecrated his friend, Stephen Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury. The resulting quarrel lasted several years and was finally ended by the Kings surrender with a promise of a yearly tribute to the Roman Church by England and Ireland. In 1215, the Barons, upon advice from Bishop Lanton compelled John to sign the Magna Carta at Runnymede which forced the King to consent to trial by jury, the principal of habeas corpus, and the right of parliament to control taxation. Thus England was changed from a monarchy to a narrow oligarchy consisting of the most powerful Nobles. John's personal life was appalling. Before his marriage to Isabella, he had been married and divorced two times, and each time declaring his ex-wife to be a harlot and his children bastards. With Isabella, John had six legitimate children, making a total of eleven offsprings. His reign saw renewal of war with Phillip II Augustus of France to whom he has lost several possessions, including Normandy by 1205. He came into conflict with his Barons and was forced to sign the Magna Carta. His later repudiation of the charter led to the first Barons War, (1215- 1217) during which he died. Burke says he was born in 1160. He was considered the worst of all English rulers. At his death in 1216, the only family member present was his oldest daughter, Joan Plantagenet, whom he had declared illigitimate.
