Peter de Kam, as a young boy of 12 years old was sent to Military school in Canada. At age 16 he ran away from school and home to Detroit, Michigan where he lied his age and joined the U.S. Army. He had his basic training in Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He was in service from 1918 until August of 1921 as a member of the Signal Corps. He grew from 5'7" to 5'10" and from 140 lbs to 185 lbs while in service. At discharge, he became a United States Citizen. After discharge he visited his Aunts, Uncles and cousins in Kalamazoo, Michigan and then ended up in Battle Creek, Michigan, 24 miles east of Kalamazoo where he went to work for the Bell Telephone Co. as a lineman and installing telephones. Here he met his wife to be, Ruth Leona Pulver whom he married in 1923. All of his 5 children were born in or around Battle Creek, but then during the depression days around 1931 the family moved south to ease the burden of expensive fuel in winter and warm clothing for the children. They lived in Meridian Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama during this time while he was looking for work. The family ended up in Davenport, Iowa where he went to work in 1932 for the Holland Furnace Co. Installing Coal Fired Furnaces. About 1933 he went to work for Gordon Van Tine Heating Co. for about another year and then decided to go in business for himself in his own Heating Co. "De Kam Home Heating." From 1932 on, except for a brief period during WW ll, he worked in the heating business either for himself or for others until his death in 1983 in Coldwater, Michigan. The family made another move back to Battle Creek, Michigan on December 7, 1940. In 1959, his son Richard joined him for the second time, first as working for him, and then as partner for De Kam and Son Heating and Air Conditioning Co. dealing mostly in Oil and Gas Furnaces. Richard was a qualified "Heating Engineer" and done the majority of the gas and oil service work as Peter was more of a Coal and stoker installation and repairman. Peter was a devoted member of the Loyal Order Of Moose for over 50 years where he presided in all the elective offices or chairs, never becoming Governor of the Lodge, but due to his undying efforts and contributions to the Lodge he was awarded Past Governor degree. He received the Fellowship degree, which is an honorary degree, or second degree of the Lodge and also Past north Moose, the 3rd degree. He was awarded "The Pilgrim Degree", the highest honor one can have bestowed upon them in the Loyal Order in 1970. He was near the top of all the thousands of Moose members of having signed up the most new Members, having over 500 to his credit. He was also a member of the Eagle Lodge, V.F.W. post, American Legion, Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodges, where he also held offices and signed up well over 200 members in each of these Lodges.

Notes for MARY LOUISE GRACE DE KAM:
Mary Lou's Accident which led to her death was caused by a minor puncture in her upper left arm from a branch of a tree. She was swinging from a tire swing in #8 Woods on a hill with a gully below. The object of the game we were playing was to swing out far enough and try to hit the tree way out. She was pushing one of us kids, or a friend and was hanging on to the bottom of the tire while the other kid was sitting in it. She did not let go in time and found herself hanging from the lower part of the tire. Because of the extra length of her body hanging down, she hit the tree and let loose of the tire. No one else had ever hit the tree before just from sitting in the swing, which was the goal of the game. Mary Lou is the "Reigning Champion" of the tire swing, being the only one to ever accomplish the feat. [Tazelaar Boone.FTW]
