Notes for Andrew Jackson Davis:
Proof of Lineage- Civil War Pension of Andrew J(ackson) Davis for proof of birth. Death Certificate.

The parentage of Andrew J. Davis

The Civil War Pension papers of Andrew J. Davis include an affidavit given by Christopher Walthour. Christopher calls Andrew his brother-in-law.
In " Marriage and Death Notices from Weekly Newspapers,1818-1865, Westmoreland County, PA", Vol. I, by Della Reagan Fischer p 143: Christopher Walthour of N. Huntingdon Twp. and Ruth Ann Davis, Jacksonville, were married August 17, 1843. Other records of the Rev. Michel J. Steck, Lutheran pastor, state that he married them at his Greensburg, PA home.
Ruth Ann (sic) Walthour, consort of Christopher Walthour of N. Huntingdon Twp., died April 24, 1849, aged 25 yr 7 mo 25 d. This would indicate that she was born c July 31, 1823.
This would indicate that Andrew J. Davis could be a brother of Christopher's wife, Ruth Ann Davis. In the 1850 PA Census of N. Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co. Andrew Davis, aged 12, and Jonathan Davis, aged 18 are living with the Christopher Walthour family. Their mother having died before 1850 the boys went to live with their sister's family. The sister died in 1849.
No record has yet been found for the marriage of Christopher Walthour to Jane (mnu)* who appears as wife in 1850 Census.
In the 1860 PA Census Andrew, aged 21, is still living with the Walthour family. Next door to the Walhour family in the Census is Caleb Davis and his new family by his second wife, Elizabeth Harrigar Davis. I believe this Caleb to be the father of Andrew, Jonathan and Ruth Ann Davis Walthour. who died in 1849. (There may have been other children.)
Andrew J. Davis marries a second wife following the death of Elizabeth Early, his first wife. On the marriage application he gives his father's named "Callip Davis" His mother's name he gives as "Margaret." This is incorrect.
His brother, Jonathan Davis, marries a second time following the death of his first wife, Lucinda Carnahan. He gives his father's name as Caleb Davis. His mother is listed as "Nancy." This is correct.

*(mnu)= maiden name unknown Family history says that Jane was a sister of Ruth Ann Davis who came to care for the children when their mother died.

Andrew Jackson Davis mustered in the 8th Pennsylvania Reserves (27th Infantry) on June 24, 1861 and mustered out May 24, 1864. Hia regiment was heavily invloved in the Peninsula Campaign in '62. In the spring of 1862 the Union Army under Gen. George McClellan went down the Patomac River to the Chesapeake Bay and commenced an invasion which was designed to take Richmond, the capitol of the Confederacy. The area involved was/is called the 'Peninsula'. His Regiment was also involved in the Seven Days Battle. His Regiment started out with over 2500 men, in the end there were about 75.
Information from Ted Jones, professor and historian. Thanks to him, I was able to get this information about Andrew's service. Andrew's war record is in my file.

He did general farming and within a few years, he started to raise livestock. He owned a stallion named Rustique, a thoroughbred Percheron. James was alive to movements. He was a member of the Madison Bell Telephone Company, of Tidal, and belonged to the Madison Grange. He was a prominent member of the M.E. Church of Widnoon, which he served as trustee and steward, he also held the office of supervisor of the roads in Madison Township for two years. Politically he was a Progressive Republican.
