Descendants of William Morris Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 MORRIS1 was born 01 Jan 1722 in Liverpool, England1, and died 01 Dec 1792 in Kanawha, Virginia1. He married ELIZABETH STIPPS1 01 Jan 1746 in Orange County, Virginia2, daughter of JOSHUA STIPPS and MARTHA COFFEE. She was born Abt. 1728 in Orange County, Virginia3, and died Abt. 1795 in Kanawha, Virginia3. Notes for WILLIAM MORRIS: William Morris, Sr., when a boy of about 12, was at the Scotch Yards at London, the police headquarters, near the Thames River; and, out of curiosity, went aboard a vessel. while he was aboard looking around, the ship left for America. He arrived at Philadelphia and found that the ship would not return to England for some months. The owner of this vessel took him into his home; and was so pleased with the spirit of William, that he wrote to the boy's father for permission to keep him. William remained until grown and afterwards. He then went to Virginia. When William Morris came to the Kanawha Valley, he settled at the mouth of Kelly's Creek. His family was so big and of such strength that no ordinary Indian party dared attack them. They had to depend upon themselves for everything as there were no stores, mills or factories. When Dunmore's War broke out in 1774, six of William Morris' sons, William, Jr., Henry, Leonard, Joshua, Levi, and John joined the army of General Andrew Lewis and took part in the Battle of Point Pleasant. William, Jr. was wounded. This William was known as "Old Billy". He and Daniel Boone were the first Representatives that Kanawha County sent to the Legislature of Virginia. Old Billy Morris, though of superior intell- igence could not even write his name, and was frequently placed in embarrassing positions. Because of this he sent his son to Washington College at Lexington, Virginia where he graduated. He returned home and was elected to the Legislature, likewise. He remained there until his death due to Alcoholism. Major Billy Morris (William Jr.) was the first and only classically educated man among the early settlers of Kanawha County. FAMILY STORY: The following story has been told around the Morris family firesides for generations. In later years, a great granddaughter, Sarah Cathrine Hansford, recorded the story of this great escape which may be found on page 30 of "Annals of the Great Kanawha" by William D. Wintz. In the year 1773, Walter Kelly and family built a log cabin, made a clearing, and planted corn at the mouth of the creek which now bears his name. The next spring, William Morris, Sr. and son, William Morris, Jr. and their family arrived at the same place. They also built a cabin, made a clearing and planted corn. The settlers at Kelly's Creek did not know that the Indians had again gone on the warpath until Capt. John Stuart, commander of Fort Donnelly, sent a message to warn of the danger and told them to head for the Greenbrier forts. It was agreed that Grandfather Morris, his son, and the women and children of both families should start immediately for Greenbrier, while Kelly, Col. Fields, and a Negro slave remained behind to tend to some leather which was being tanned. They had been gone but a short time when Kelly was killed by Indians firing from ambush. The Negro ran into the fields and was never heard from again. Col. Fields made his escape by running into a corn field, later reaching Fort Donnelly after traveling 90 miles through unbroken wilderness. Grandfather and party had gone but a short distance when they heard that killed Kelly which caused them to double their time. They made every effort to travel silently, leaving as few traces of their route as possible behind them. They dared not make a fire or shoot a gun. Great-Grandmother reported that one night they had camped under a shelving cliff in the dark; and, that little Billy Morris III, who was at the time a baby, awoke in the night and after nursing "crowed" so loud that they all imagined the Indians would be upon them any moment. However, they all reached Donnelly's Fort and safety. It should be noted that William Morris, Jr. returned to Camp Union in time to join his five brothers on their way to the Battle of Point Pleasant. They were: Leonard, Henry, Joshua, Levi, and John. William had the distinction of being the only brother wounded. LAND HOLDINGS: Hanover County, Virginia, 400 acres adjoining the land of John Henry, on the head of Round About Creek. ELIZABETH2 MORRIS (WILLIAM1)5,6 was born Abt. 1753 in Culpepper, Virginia7,8, and died Bef. 1807 in Kanawha, Virginia9,10,10. She married (1) MICHAEL SEE11 Abt. 1778 in Greenbrier, Virginia11,12,13, son of FREDERICK SEE and CATHERINE VANDERPOOL. He was born Abt. 1751 in South Branch, Augusta, Virginia14, and died 23 May 1792 in Fort Randolph, Point Pleasant, Mason, WV14. She married (2) THOMAS COBB15 179915,16. Notes for MICHAEL SEE: A CHRONICLE OF THE SEE FAMILY by Irene See Brasel The lives of the two brothers, George & Michael See, ran parallel. Together they had experienced the Muddy Creek Massacre, Indian captivity, participated in the battle of Point Pleasant, served under Capt. Arbuckle in border warfare, established their homes in Greenbrier and later moved on down the Kanawha Valley. Michael See, born about 1751 in Hampshire County, Virginia, married Elizabeth Morris in 1776. She was the daughter of William Morris, Pioneer of Kanawha who settled about 20 miles above the present site of Charleston, West Virginia. In 1777, the Ohio Indians, agitated by British agents, again became troublesome. Chief Cornstalk came to the garrison at Point Pleasant to give warning that the tribes planned to join the British as allies. Capt. Arbuckle thought it best to detain the chief, his son Elinipisco, Redhawk, a Delaware Chief, and another Indian as hostages. Here in November 1777 all were murdered by soldiers of the garrison to avenge the death of a Virginia soldier, one Gilmore, killed while the Indians were prisoners. The Governor of Virginia offered a reward for the arrest of the murderers; but, they went unpunished; and, for this act of treachery, Chief Cornstalk's followers took to the warpath to avenge his death. In July 1778, an Indian Band of 200 warriors crossed the Ohio River and failing in their attack on the garrison at Point Pleasant, set off up the valley toward the Greenbrier Region. Capt. McKee, in command of the garrison, noting the route taken by the Indians, sent two scouts disguised as Indians, at the risk of their lives, to warn the settlement in Greenbrier. Although the Indians had a two day start, the scouts, Phillip Hammond and John Prior, overtook the band about 20 miles north of Lewisburg. Passing on with great speed to Col. Donnally's, they gave the alarm of the approach- ing raiders. The aroused settlement fled to Donnally's Fort. Dick Pointer, the Negro servant of Michael See, was one of the 60 men, women & children gathered in the stockade. The two young scouts warned Col. Donnally to store a supply of water. they told of the suffer- ing for water at Point Pleasant in the same emergency. A hogshead of water was secured and placed against the kitchen door. Early next morning, John Pritchard, a white servant of Donnally's, left the fort, leaving the gate ajar. He was tomahawked. The sentinel, William Hughart, saw Indians and spread the alarm. The gate still open, the outer yard was soon full of Indians who began cutting down the kitchen door. Dick Pointer, jumping about with a gun in his hand called "Massa, what must I do?" "Shoot, and quick at the bunch, damn you!" Dick obeyed, killing nine Indians with his Blunderbuss loaded with a variety of missiles. The recoil laid the Negro flat. Hammond fired another shot and the door was closed. The sleeping refugees were now aroused and soon opened fire through the port holes. The battle continued throughout the day. The Indians tried every conceivable way to take the fort. Meanwhile, a relief party of 67 from Lewisburg under Capt. Johnson started for the fort and though the Indians opened fire, managed to enter without casualties. By nightfall, the Indians withdrew, having lost 17, while the whites had 4 killed. For this heroic act, Pointer was given his freedom and the public built a cabin for him on land given by one John Davis. Dick died in 1827 and was buried in Lewisburg Cemetery. In 1776, Capt. Mathew Arbuckle built a fort at the mouth of the Kanawha River. It was called Fort Randolph. Prior to July 12, 1779, Fort Randolph was evacuated, after which it was burned by the Indians. In the year 1785, a third fort was built at the Point on the Ohio River. New Fort Randolph was commanded by Col. Thomas Lewis and from that time on, the white man has never ceased to reside at Point Pleasant. Ten years after the Revolution, Indian hostility on the frontier of the young nation still made life for the settlers unsafe. By this time, the Sees had joined the tide of westward land seekers and had moved down the Kanawha Valley and settled on Crooked Creek about a mile above the mouth of the Kanawha River. Michael See, his wife Elizabeth and their four children, George, Michael, Frances and Frederick were living at the fort with the other settlers near Point Pleasant. For several years these pioneers were forced to spend more time in the forts than at their homes. Michael See was a signer of the petition to the Governor of Virginia, Sept. 19, 1791, asking protection for citizens of Greenbrier County against the Indians. In Virginia State Papers, Oct. 3, 1791, John Morris, John Hansford, John Jones, Reuben Slaughter, and Michael See were recommended as fit persons to execute the office of Magistrates in Kanawha County. On May 23, 1792, Michael See was supervising the cultivation of the crops for the settlers at Fort Randolph. A squad of 10 soldiers had been sent from the fort to guard the men while they worked. The day was warm and the soldiers retired to the shade of a tree and engaged in a game of cards. A band of Wyandottes slipped up and under their very noses, killed Michael See and Robert St. Clair and took Thomas Northup and a Negro boy, Jonathan Pointer, who belonged to Michael, prisoners. That night at the Fort, Elizabeth See gave birth to William, from whom are descended the Sees of Mason County, West Virginia. Michael See was buried near the fort. The story told in later years is that the Mason County Court House was built with one corner over Michael's grave and another over the grave of Chief Cornstalk. Today a two acre state park, Tu-Endie Wei marks the site of the famous battleground. The Revolutionary Service Record of Michael See, Jr. was accepted by the Daughters of the American Revolution June 6, 1940. Anne Weller Ready lists the name of Michael See on page 70 in West Virginia Revolutionary Ancestry. At the Virginia State Library at Richmond is an original document, Public Service Claims. Miss Clara See gives an account of Frederick as related by her father, who was a nephew. He was said to have been with a show boat which traveled up and down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. In New Orleans he made the acquaintance of a well to do widow from Texas. They married and he returned with her to live in Texas. The last reference to Frederick was during the Civil War when young Charles Michael See, son of Shull M. See, came in contact with a couple of brothers named See, who were confederate prisoners under his guard. They identified themselves as the sons of Frederick See as described above; but, the details have not survived the passage of time. 13. iv. MICHAEL SEE, b. She was born 15 Mar 1751 in Forest Glen, Montgomery, Maryland, and died 03 Sep 1823 in Charleston, Kanawha County, VA29. Notes for MAJOR WILLIAM MORRIS, JR.: William Morris, Jr. came to Kanawha with his father, father's family and his own wife and children. When his father became old, he took care of the farm from his father. He became possessed of many tracts of choice lands. When the new county of Kanawha was formed, he became one of it's justices. He was appointed trustee for the towns of Charleston and Point Pleasant as well. He was in the legislature for Kanawha from 1792-1794, 1796-1798 and 1800. He was sheriff in 1801. There was no more important person in the settlement than he who was known in later years as Major William Morris. He lived at Kelly's Creek and is buried under the small brick church later erected there; and, first known as Virginia's Chapel at Cedar Grove. A bronze tablet is placed on the outer wall of the church in his memory. Notes for CATHERINE CARROLL: It is tradition that the Carrolls, whose ancestors were Catherines, owned land where the city of Washington is now located. If this is correct, then they were descendants of Daniel Carroll of Maryland, who owned a farm where Wasington now is. There was a William Carroll Family settled on land near the Morris Family; and, Catherine probably was the daughter of William Carroll, although I have not found any documentation to support this fact. Mrs. Morris was a woman of more than ordinary attainments, and was highly respected by all who knew her. She outlived her husband by about 20 years & left her estate to her daughters; Mrs Cynthia Noyes, Mrs. Jane Hansford and Mrs. Catherine Venable. The Morris family had a large estate with land patents in Botecourt, Greenbrier, Kanawha and other counties. From "The Strength of Our People" by Norva Balser Warner, Page 166: "Once, when the Morrises first moved to Kelly's Creek and they were living in Walter Kelly's renovated cabin, the men were all out hunting and Katie was left alone with one servant helping her. They were busy cooking on the open fireplace when two Indians came to the door and not knowing who it was, Katie opened the door. One of them stepped inside with his tomahawk raised. Katie quickly grabbed an iron skillet and whacked him on the head and kept beating him until he was shoved out the door. At this time, she barred the door quickly. Needless to say the Indian was angry and he raised his gun to shoot through the door. Suddenly, the other older, wiser Indian said 'No, don't shoot her for she is a brave woman'. They then left the women alone. Katie and all the early women were brave women." Once decided to attend a social function on the north side of the Kanawha River, but found no boat on her side, so taking the clothes she wished to wear, placed them in a sugar trough, and pushing it ahead of her, swam to the other side, and attended the party. She was very casual about it, and said she had done the same thing several times. Married Charles Venable in 1800, and lived on the south side of the Kanawha opposite Charleston where Venable Branch enters the river. She left no children. HENRY2 MORRIS (WILLIAM1)39 was born 174840, and died 1824 in Nicholas County, Virginia41,42. He married MARY BIRD43. She was born Abt. 1747 in Bath County, VA44, and died Aft. 182045. Notes for HENRY MORRIS: Henry was the first of the name to come to Nicholas County. His wife had been a captive of the Shawnee Indians for seven years. About 1790 the family moved to Peters Creek, where in 1792 his two daughters, Peggy and Betsy, were killed by Indians. Henry died in 1824 and is buried on his home place. Henry participated in the battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. He was the first settler in now Nicholas County, a lineal descendant of William Morris, still living on the original grant of 600 acres and owned land where the cabin had stood. From "Pioneers and Their Homes on Upper Kanawha" by Ruth Woods Dayton, Page 292: Henry's wife Mary Byrd and her sister had previously been captured by Indians and held captive for seven years until she was sixteen years old. Henry Morris was a physical giant, a man of unusual and remarkable strength and agility, who could turn summersaults like a circus performer, kick a hat from a nine foot pole, according to old legends, and knock out an adversary with one punch. He was the most noted pugilist in the early history of the county, and, meeting all comers, was champion of the heavyweights, year after year...the championship being decided at every Muster of the County Militia. A mighty hunter, and totally without fear, Mr. Morris, against the advice of his brothers, settled in 1791 on Peter's Creek of Gauley River, with only two neighbors. It was a rugged and remote section some miles farther east than the cabins of the other members of the Morris Family. The disaster feared by his relatives took it's toll in 1792 when two of the young Morris daughters, Betsy and Margaret, were slain and scalped by Indians not far from their father's cabin. Henry Morris realized too late his mistake in settling in so lonely a spot, and alarmed for the safety of the rest of his family, quickly abandoned the location and returned to the Kelly's Creek settlement. The tragedy grieved and embittered him, and vowing no Indian should ever again cross his path and live, he avenged the death of his daughters many times. It was built by Leonard Morris, his sons, and other members of that early community. It was built 1820-1821 of stone that was hand cut, brick made near the river bank, and mortar made from crushed mussel shells. Three layers of brick form the walls. The plaster was smoothed on the walls by hand. Ebenezer Chapel cost $1,500.00 to build. The Methodists purchased the property on 29 July 1842 and took over the cost of the church. They could not make the payments on it; and, in 1848 Luke Wilcox bought it for $630.00. He opened it to all good denominations. It served as a school as early as the 1820s. The old log cabin school, near the mouth of Len's Creek burned and the church was used as a school house. Leonard Morris taught students there before he died in 1831. In the 1840s cholera struck the valley and many died, some being buried in the Ebenezer Church yard. After the Civil War, the church was only a hull of a building, after the soldiers had ripped up the flooring, steps, seats, and window sashes for fire wood. The chapel was restored in 1875. In 1974 the chapel was in danger as it was owned by the State Highway Department; and was now very near the interstate highway. Then, the Mayor of Marmet, Bill Pauley, and Governor Arch Moore, along with a committee which was formed to save the chapel, did just that, placing it on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. From "Pioneers and Their Homes on Upper Kanawha" by Ruth Woods Dayton, Page 293: Leonard is perhaps the best known of the Morris family. A man of strong character and long life. He was a veteran of the Battle of Point Pleasant. He lived first at the mouth of Slaughter's Creek on the south side of the Kanawha River, later moving farther west to the mouth of Len's Creek, eight miles above Charleston, at Marmet. He was one of the first justices of the new county of Kanawha, and later one of the first trustees of the Charleston. So few ministers were available in the sparsely settled valley that in 1804 the County Court designated two of it's magistrates as authorized to perform marriages, Leonard Morris being one of them. He served as sheriff in 1798, and was often appointed to "view" the route for proposed roads, and to perform other public services. Notes for JOSHUA MORRIS: Joshua is buried in Old Union Cemetery at Milton, West Virginia. He came with his family to Kanawha Valley in 1773; but, returned to Culpepper County, Virginia because the land he had selected and claimed was in the western end of the Teays Valley and the Indians were still troublesome there. A monument in the Cabell County courtyard lists him as a Revolutionary War Soldier. He is said to have been a reliable man of good judgement. He returned to the Kanawha Valley in 1800. According to Page 294 of "Pioneers and Their Homes on Upper Kanawha" by Ruth Woods Dayton, Joshua fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant; and was considered to be a reliable man of good judgement. Notes for FRANCES SIMS: Frances is also buried in Old Union Cemetery at Milton, West Virginia. Their children are listed in Joshua's will which is listed in the First Record Book of Kanawha County. He was one of the best known of the Morris brothers; and, was highly regarded. He lived on the south side of the Kanawha five miles above Charleston. He built a fort, then lived at the mouth of Campbell's Creek. He later moved to Cabell County. He was very active in command of the Rangers during border warfare. ACHILLES CARLOS2 MORRIS (WILLIAM1)79 was born Abt. 1760 in Culpeper County, VA80, and died 1821 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois81. He married (1) ELIZABETH JARRETT82. He married (2) MISS PRAIRIES, daughter of JONATHAN PRAIRIES. Notes for ACHILLES CARLOS MORRIS: From "Kanawha Valley Genealogical Society Journal", Summer 1997, Page 32-35: THE OLD LEWISBURG ACADEMY, Chapter XXVII - Sketches of Dr. McElhenney's Scholars Achilles Morris was one of the early pupils at the academy. Like his fellow students from, Kanawha, he had to travel to and fro, through the intervening 100 miles of forest, then existing on horseback. While his brother, "Major Billy" was educated with full honors from Washington College, it is thought that the only education that Achilles received was at the Lewisburg Academy. He emigrated from Kanawha to the State of Illinois about the year 1830 or 1831, and settled near Springfield, a thriving little town in Sangamon County, which became the capitol of the state in 1840. The love engendered by Mr. Morris for the forest scenery of the Kanawha Valley had much to do with deciding his settlement near the Elk-heart, Irish, Sugar, Spring Island, and Buffalo heart groves in close proximity at that day to Springfield. It is a love that no mountaineer can ever divest himself of, and these groves afforded, in great part, what his early life had been accustomed to. Mr. Morris located in Illinois just before the commencement of the Indian war of 1832; and as Captain of a company of either the State Militia or the U.S. Troops, he assisted in exterminating a part of the Sac and Fox Indians under the infamous Black Hawk, dispersing the remainder over the prairies west of the Mississippi River. He continued a soldier in this Black Hawk War until security was restored to the settlers by the conclusion of hostilities in 1832 and 1833. He also became, in time, a prominent man in politics and otherwise; and is known to have represented his county at least once in the Illinois Legislature. His wife was a Miss Prairies, a daughter of Jonathan Prairies, who had also moved to Spring- field at the same time with Mr. Morris. But, here, our history of the man must cease. Beyond the fact of his having reared a family, nothing has been gleaned from any source bearing upon the religious views of his declining years and the particulars of his decease. Child of ACHILLES MORRIS and ELIZABETH JARRETT is: 36. i. ACHILLES3 MORRIS, b. Abt. 1799; d. 11 Apr 1872. 9. LEVI2 MORRIS (WILLIAM1)83 was born Abt. 175384, and died Abt. 183484. He married (1) MARGARET STARKS85. He married (2) MARGARET JARRETT85 22 May 1788 in Rockingham County, Virginia85, daughter of JAMES JARRETT and ELIZABETH GRIFFEY. She was born Abt. 1770. Notes for LEVI MORRIS: From "Pioneers and Their Homes on Upper Kanawha" by Ruth Woods Dayton, Page 294: Levi, fifth son of William Morris, Sr., fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant. In settling the estate of their father, Leonard and John Morris, as Executors, deeded to Levi Morris 100 acres on the south side of the Kanawha, where Levi then lived (1793). This location was near the present town of Montgomery, and he is considered the first settler. Married first Margaret Stark; second, Margaret Jarrett. BENJAMIN2 MORRIS (WILLIAM1)88 was born Abt. 1770 in Greenbrier County, VA89, and died Jul 182989. He married NANCY JARRETT90 10 Nov 1788 in Rockingham County, Virginia91, daughter of JAMES JARRETT and ELIZABETH GRIFFEY. She was born Abt. 177092, and died 13 May 183292. Notes for BENJAMIN MORRIS: From "Pioneers and Their Homes on Upper Kanawha" by Ruth Woods Dayton, Page 295: Benjamin was the eighth son of William Morris, Sr. In the settlement of his father's estate, Benjamin Morris was deeded by the Executors, who were his brothers Leonard and John, 135 acres of land on the southwest side of Kanawha. This was, no doubt, part of the tract below and including the site of Montgomery upon which Levi Morris was then living and which had been deeded to him in the settlement. There seems to have been a good deal of "brotherly land=swapping" later. Benjamin built a brick house in 1824 on the north side of the river opposite these lands, but sold it to Levi and moved across on the south side to his lands there, which later became the Montgomery farm. Presumably, Levi then shifted sides and moved across the river to live in the brick house on the north bank. Benjamin Morris was a great hunter, and if the magnitude of the tales told of his prowess be even partly true, he would still be no mean shot by any standards. One such tale states that he killed 133 bears in one day. Mr. Morris married Nancy Jarrett. The Jarrett family were early settlers on Muddy Creek in Greenbrier County, and as the Morris family lived on the same creek before coming to the Kanawha, the several Morris-Jarrett marriages likely resulted from this early acquaintanceship. Notes for FRANCES SEE: INFORMATION PROVIDED BY SYLVIA WHITTAKER OF FAIRVIEW WEST VIRGINIA: Frances See Morris has been described by her sister-in-law, Nancy Greenlee See, wife Michael See III, as being tall and very strong, having piercing black eyes and dark complexion. It is said that she could stand in a half bushel measure and lift a two bushel bag of wheat to her shoulder. It is also related that she shot a wild turkey which was sitting on the limb of a dead tree on the opposite bank of the Kanawha River, a distance of some 300 yards. Notes: After Carroll's death, Frances Morris married Christopher Ringsberry and lived in Mason County, VA until at least 1840, when Christopher Ringsberry is in the Census there with a family. Sometime after 1840 and before 1850 they moved to Montpelier, Muscatine County, Iowa. Frances died there sometime after the 1856 Iowa State Census; but before the 1860 US Census. Christopher was still living by the time of the 1870 US Census in the same town with their married daughter, Elizabeth Watts, and her family. Frances is buried in the Blue Grass Cemetery, Scott County, Iowa. Her tombstone reads that she died at the age of 76 years. If this is true, she would actually have been born in 1782. More About FRANCES SEE: Burial: Blue Grass Cemetery, Scott Co., Iowa Notes for CARROLL MORRIS: the Department of the Archives and History of West Virginia, page 125, names Caroll Morris in Capt. Next to where Christopher Ringsberry/Ringsby/Ringsley/Ringlesby is buried in the Blue Grass Cemetery, there is a John Ringlesby buried there. He died 15 Apr 1855 at the age of 74. I believe that this could be a brother of Christopher. There also was a Fielden Ringsby, born in Virginia, who went to live in Hamilton County, Ohio; and, appears in the 1860 Census there with his family which includes a son named Christopher. I believe this Fielden Ringsby to also be a brother of Christopher. There were other possible brothers who were early arrivals with some of the first settlers of the area. They settled in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. Their names were Lewis, Andrew, and Strother Ringlesby. John had also actually lived in Davenport. FROM THE "DAVENPORT DEMOCRAT" 20 Sep 1873: Christopher Ringlesby, aged ninety-four years, died in Montpelier Township, Muscatine County, on Tuesday. He was born in Virginia in 1779, and had been a resident of that county about thirty years. He was the oldest man in Muscatine County. SCOTT COUNTY W.P.A. She married FLEMING COBB223 1795 in Kanawha County VA223. He was born 23 Dec 1767 in Albemarle County, Virginia224,225, and died 10 Jan 1846 in Kanawha County, VA226. Notes for SARAH MORRIS: Her Tombstone in the Cobb Cemetery reads: Mrs. Sarah Cobbs, widow of Fleming Cobbs, daughter of Leonard Morris, the deceased was born at Donnally's Fort, Greenbrier County, Virginia in 1775 and departed this life 23 October 1856. She was a pious member of the Baptist Church and died in the full hope of meeting kindred dead in the land of bliss. Cobb Cemetery is located just east of the fourth green, fifth tee, of the Kanawha County Club, which is located on Kanawha Turnpike in the city of South Charleston, West Virginia. Notes for FLEMING COBB: Fleming Cobb was born in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1767. Sometime later his family moved to Buckingham County. He enlisted as a volunteer to serve on the frontier and was sent to Fort Lee at the mouth of the Elk River. According to "Annals of the Great Kanawha" by William D. Wintz, her arrived there in October 1789. He decided to settle permanently in the Kanawha Valley. Later, he returned to his home to inform his parents of his plans. When Fleming returned he brought his Uncle, Thomas Upton, and his family with him. Upton acquired 240 acres five miles down river from Fort Lee on the south side. He built a cabin on a small stream that is still known as Upton Creek. Thomas Upton, Jr. also became a ranger at Fort Lee. It was during the summer of 1790 that Fleming is said to have performed a remarkable feat of endurance and courage as a ranger. The fort was running low on ammunition; and, someone was needed to go to Fort Randolph and bring back a supply of powder and lead as soon as possible. Fleming volunteered and the story of his journey has become an epic in the tradition of the Kanawha Valley. He traveled under cover of darkness. He ran his canoe down the river with long, powerful strokes, slowing down only long enough to pick his way through the shoals. As daylight came upon him, he spotted several Indians moving up the opposite side of the river. He pulled into the mouth of a small branch which was concealed by overhanging trees and slept for several hours. When he awoke he continued the last ten miles to the fort and began loading his canoe for the return trip. As soon as complete darkness fell, Fleming shoved off and headed upstream. Not only was he traveling against the current, but the loaded canoe slowed him down. Bending to the paddle, he managed to maintain a normal speed. He traveled through each of the several shoals in the river in the dark counting on skill to bring his loaded craft through the treacherous rapids. Just before daylight, he was running up the north side of the river just below the mouth of Coal when somehow, he was discovered by the three Indians he had seen traveling east the day before. They took several shots at him, but when they reached the mouth of the Coal River they had to swim over which slowed them down. They caught up but, he being on the other side of the river was still out of range. Coming to a shallow place in the river, one of the Indians tried to wade over and come up behind him. Seeing the plan, he slowed his canoe almost to a stop and when the wading Indian came within range, he fired, wounding him. The other two Indians came to their brother's aid, firing a few parting shots; but, Fleming pushed the canoe ahead and out of range. He pulled into Fort Lee about 10 o'clock that morning having made the sixty mile trip in just under fourteen hours. Hiram Cobbs, a grandson of Fleming, was later confronted by some friends on Militia Day who proclaimed that the famous fourteen-hour canoe trip by his grandfather was just an old folks tale, that it never really happened. They saying that no one could accomplish such a feat. Rising to the defense of his grandfather, Hiram bet a gallon of peach brandy that he could duplicate the old record. Hiram Cobbs beat his grandfather's record with time to spare. More About FLEMING COBB and SARAH MORRIS: Marriage: 1795, Kanawha County VA227 Children of SARAH MORRIS and FLEMING COBB are: i. She married NORRIS STANLEY WHITTEKER267 19 Jan 1832 in Kanawha County VA268,269,270, son of WILLIAM WHITTEKER and PHILENA COBB. He was born 03 Feb 1807 in Charleston, Kanawha, VA271, and died 04 Sep 1889 in Charleston, Kanawha, WV272. Notes for LETITIA MORRIS: THE WEST VIRGINIA COURIER: Wednesday, April 26, 1876 The remains of the late Mrs. Letitia Whittaker were placed in their final resting place in Spring Hill Cemetery on Tuesday evening. Notes for NORRIS STANLEY WHITTEKER: "History of Kanawha County" by George Atkinson - Page 280-281: Mr Whitteker is a man of great physical power and endurance. He is 5 ft 8 in tall and his average weight for 50 years has been 180 lbs. Norris S. Whitteker was born in Charleston, Kanawha County, Virginia on 3rd February 1807, where he has resided ever since. He has always claimed the honor of being the first white child born in the city limits of Charleston, and in this, no doubt he is correct. He established a reputation for being an expert fisherman and hunter in his younger years. He attended school at the Mercer Academy, under the instruction of Dr. Henry Ruffner, Jacob Rand, and Parson Chaddock, and obtained a fair English education. After he grew to manhood, he became a Keel boatman in the trade between Charleston and Cincinnati, which required about one month to complete the round trip. These boat were the only transportation, in those days, between the Kanawha and the Western cities. Mr. Whitteker's next occupation was that of Flat boatman, running salt to the towns on the lower Ohio. He next learned the carpenters' trade and there are a number of houses still standing in Charleston, constructed by him as architect & builder. He also learned the painters' trade and painted more houses in Charleston than any man. His Uncle Thomas Whitteker was the proprietor of a large saw mill at the mouth of the Elk River, and for 11 years, Norris was head sawyer at the mill, and superintendent of building boats, which was carried on as part of the business of all saw mills of the time. He was also engaged in steam boating in the employ of Armstrong Grant & Co. as Mate on the steamer "Emigrant" from 1828 until 1830. In 1831 he built three large brick houses on Kanawha Street, now owned by W. T. Thayer, Mrs. W. J. Rand and John C. Ruby. All of these houses were constructed of brick mad by Norris' own hands. Mr. Whitteker was an ardent supporter of the Union, and as a token of respect and confidence, he was appointed Postmaster of Charleston, in the Spring of 1851 by President Lincoln, which office he held until the Fall of 1866, when he was removed by President Johnson, because he refused to pay allegiance to him after he switched to the Democratic Party upon the Assassination of President Lincoln. During the War, Charleston was an important military post; and, on one memorable day his registry book showed that 40,000 letters passed through his office. For three or four years the average had been 12,000 per day. That is more than treble the letters now handled in the same office, although the town has more than trebled it's population. Mr. Whitteker was a noted temperance worker in Charleston and surrounding country for more than 40 years. During that time, he delivered more than one thousand Temperance speeches. In 1830 he joined the Washingtonian Temperance Society. During the rest of his life he never even tasted anything intoxicating. He joined the Presbyterian Church in 1831 and lived as a Christian from that time on. From WV Newspaper Obituaries 1884-1894 by KVGS Saturday, September 7, 1889 Charleston, West Virginia September 4 Norris S. Whitaker, aged 83 years, who was the first white child born in the city limits of Charleston, was killed by the shifting engine at the Kanawha and Ohio Yard this afternoon at about 4:00 O'clock. All the wheels passed over the middle of his body. LAND HOLDINGS: Norris and his brother, Henry B. Whitteker, bought from Isaac Noyes a lot in Charleston fronting 300 ft. on the Kanawha River bank, in 1832. This was Norris Whitteker's first purchase recorded in Deed Book H. Page 349. Four years later, in 1836 he, by himself, bought from John F. Faure and his wife a 2 acre lot in Charleston, Deed Book IJ, Page 199. Thomas C. Thomas sold him another 1/2 acre lot in Charleston the same year, Deed Book IJ, Page 357. The next year, he obtained from Frederick Brooks, two parcels 1 1/2 acre and 3 acres near Charleston, Deed Book IJ, Page 474. In 1842, in partnership with brothers Alfred T. and William F. Whitteker, he gained 152 acres in Kanawha County, Deed Book N, Page 180. Then, not until 23 years later, in 1865, did he buy another parcel, the Cox property back of Charleston from the heirs of William R. Cox, Deed Book Y, Page 565. Norris bought a lot on Brooks Street in Charleston from William T. Thayer and his wife in 1868; and the following year, in partnership with Virginia Whitteker, he bought from the George H. Porter Trust 110 acres on the point and 620 acres on the Elk at Two Mile Creek, recorded in Deed Book 25, Page 497. Another 100 acres on the Elk at Two Mile was purchased from the H. C. McWhorter Trust in 1869, Deed Book 26, Page 333. More About CYRUS BAKER and LAYDIE WATTS: Marriage: 16 Feb 1885313 viii. PANTHA C. WATTS314, d. 31 May 1856, Montpelier, Muscatine Co., Iowa314. Notes for PANTHA C. WATTS: There is some question as to the age of this child when she died. According to "History of Muscatine County Iowa Vol II", Page 504, she died in infancy. She does not appear in any of the Census records; not the US Census for the area or the Iowa State Census, both of which the rest of her whole family were recorded in. I believe she probably died as an infant. The Iowa State Census was taken every two years around this time; and, if she were any older she would have been in the 1856 Montpelier, Muscatine County, Iowa State Census with the rest of her family. The marker on her grave was barely readable by the time of the 1970s which was the last time a walk through and recording in the Blue Grass Cemetery was done. The marker looked as if it said "Pantha C. daughter of J. & E., died May 31, 1856" then it looked as if it read "7 yr 1mo 13 or 15 days". I hope to get a photo of it because I believe it is probably really " 1mo 13 or 15 days" only. If she were really 7 years old at the time of death, she would definitely have been in the 1852 and 1854 Iowa State Census. More About PANTHA C. HIGH342 14 Jul 1860 in Charleston, Kanawha, VA343, daughter of JOHN HIGH and ELLANOR SHIELDS. She was born 18 Sep 1842 in Putnam County, VA344,345, and died 02 Aug 1930 in Charleston, Kanawha, WV346. Notes for WILLIAM WALLACE WHITTAKER: The 13th Regiment of the West Virginia Infantry was organized in October of 1862, when William W. Whitteker began his service in the Union Army. Within only a few months, he was injured by a box falling on his leg and dislocating his knee; and was discharged with a disability in March of 1863. During his service, the 13th Regiment served in the Kanawha Valley, mostly doing guard duty and scouting. After his discharge, the Regiment went on to fight in many skirmishes and event- ually fought in the Battle of Lexington and the Battle of Lynchburg. They displayed conspicuous gallantry in the Battle of Winchester, Virginia. He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Portsmouth Ohio, in the Soldiers' Circle, Section A, Row 4, Grave 9. Notes for VIRGINIA F. HIGH: Lived at 209 Tennessee Avenue, Charleston, West Virginia. According to her death certificate, she died of senility, contributing cause was heart failure. Undertaker was John Barlow. Buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston, West Virginia in the Hall & Edmunds Addition, Section J, Lot 39. OBITUARY: THE CHARLESTON DAILY MAIL (Newspaper) 07 Feb 1930 MRS. Whittaker's death certificate shows that he lived at #1 Mary Street in Charleston at the time of his death; and he was a widower. I have not yet discovered the name of his wife or any children they may have had. He was a painter by trade. He is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery. vi. LENA WHITTAKER349, b. 08 Sep 1871, Charleston, Kanawha, WV349; d. Abt. 1929, Charleston, Kanawha, VA350. Notes for LENA WHITTAKER: Information has been give by Sylvia Whittaker of Fairview, WV, that Lena married one Fred Isley; however, when she died and her estate was settled, she was designated as "Lena Whittaker, deceased". Also, when she bought the grave in which Burlew was interred at Spring Hill in 1924, she was listed on the deed as "Lena Whittaker". Information that Lena had lived in Ohio was first forthcoming from Probate Records of her mother's death. In fact, in the 1900 Census she was living in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. She was listed as having been divorced and having one child born of which one child lived. However, the child does not appear in the census with her. She was named in her brother, Burlew Whittaker's, obituary of 1924 as Lena Bernie, living in Columbus Ohio. She does not appear either under the name of Bernie or the name of Whittaker in the 1920 or 1930 Census of Columbus, Ohio. vii. BURLEW WHITTAKER351, b. 08 Oct 1875, Charleston, Kanawha, WV352; d. 17 Sep 1924, Charleston, Kanawha, WV353; m. DELILAH KIDD354, 05 Jul 1905, Charleston, Kanawha, VA354; b. Bet. Jun 1890 - 1892, Charleston, Kanawha, WV355. Notes for BURLEW WHITTAKER: Remembrances of Dolores Burlew was my Mom's favorite uncle. She mentioned him quite a bit. I think he may have traveled around, because, in order for her to be so familiar with him, He would have had to visit Benjamin, Neva and the kids both in Benwood and Cincinnati. A warrant was issued for his arrest in 1911 for misdemeanor trespass on a Rail Road Train (Kanawha County Court Case No. 1911-3. There was a complaint of felony larceny brought against him as well in the same year (Kanawha County Court Case No. 1911-11). Burlew married Delilah Kidd in 1905, when he was 29 years old; and, she was only 15, according to the Marriage Record. However her birth date in 1900 US Census is given as June 1892, which actually would have made her really 13 years old at the time they married. There is no trace of what happened in this marriage. There is no record of any children born to Burlew and Delilah. By the time of the 1910 Census she was back living at home again. During the World War I Draft, in 1918, Burlew registered; and, showed that he was working in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He put his mother's address, 209 Tennessee Avenue, Charleston, West Virginia as his permanent address, though. His death certificate which was issued in Kanawha County, No. 11009, states that he was a steamboat and iron worker. When Burlew died in 1924, just a few weeks after my Grandfather, Benjamin Whittaker, his brother, the death record stated that he was single. Lena Whittaker, his sister, bought the plot in Spring Hill Cemetery where he is buried. I bought the head stone 81 years later, as well as the one for my Grandfather, Benjamin. Both Burlew and Benjamin died of pneumonia. Charleston Daily Mail, 17 Sep 1924, Page 11: BURLEW WHITTAKER Burlew Whittaker, 48 years of age, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Virginia Whittaker, 209 Tennessee Avenue, last night. He is survived by his mother, three brothers; William, John, and Albert Whittaker, all of Charleston, and one sister Mrs. Lena Bernie of Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services will be held from the home tomorrow afternoon at 3 O'clock. Burial will be made in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Notes for DELILAH KIDD: Delilah appears to have been named after her grandmother, Delilah Kidd, who was living with another of her sons, Willie S. Kidd, in the 1900 US Census of Charleston WV. Notes for CHARLES FRANCES WHITTAKER: Information supplied by Sylvia Whittaker of Fairview WV Ruby Whittaker, his niece, said that Charles left on a steamboat, on her birthday in 1909, and was never seen again. Charles could not be located in either the 1900 or 1910 US Census. 110. x. ALBERT TEED WHITTAKER, b. 08 Mar 1882, Charleston, Kanawha, WV; d. 08 Apr 1954, Wadestown, Monongalia, WV. 76. KINDER359,360 30 Jun 1869 in Charleston, Kanawha, WV361,362, daughter of HENRY KINDER and MARY. She was born Abt. 1840 in Ohio363,364, and died Aft. 1900 in Putnam County, WV. Notes for HENRY B. WHITTAKER: At the end of 1871 on the 16th of December Henry B. and Sarah A. Whittaker sold their house and property and transferred the deed to Bushrod Creel. They moved to Winfield in Putnam County, West Virginia, where Henry was a jeweler. LAND HOLDINGS: Henry B. only bought one lot which was situated on Dickinson Street from William A. Quarrier and his wife in 1874 which was recorded in Deed Book 29 on Page 512. Notes for SARAH A. KINDER: When Sarah A. Kinder married Henry B. Whittaker, she was already a widow at the age of 29. The writing on the Kanawha County Marriage Record of 1869, Page 66, is very hard to read; but looks like her last name when she was married was "Overalls". However, this marriage record provided the names of her parents, Henry and Mary Kinder. LAND HOLDINGS: Sarah bought two lots in Charleston. The first, on Third Street, was bought in 1869 from B. H. Smith, Deed Book 26, Page 124. The second, was purchased in 1871 from William A. Quarrier and his wife and recorded in Deed Book 29, Page 512.
