Notes for JAMES GARCELON: James was the first of the Garcelons to come to America. He came as a boy of 13 or 14, in 1752 or 1753, as a cabin boy on a ship, serving his time with a Mr. Pane in Boston. He may have been apprenticed to a Captain Daniel Gibb or Gibbs. He and Deliverance lived in Gloucester after their marriage in 1760 until the beginning of the American Revolution when they moved, first, to Falmouth. They then moved on to Lewiston, Maine in 1776; and, settled at Lewiston Falls. They lived in Varnum House, situated near the cove at the head of the falls, where their youngest daughter, Sally, was born 27 Jun 1776. William Garcelon wrote a history of Lewiston which includes the first four generations of the Garcelons in this country. He established a ferry, an inn, and later served as selectman as written in NEHGS Journal, Vol. 84, Page 454, published 1930. He resided on the road from Troy Corner to Rogers Corner in the house, still standing in 1990, which earlier belonged to Samuel Gilkey, and is said to be the oldest house in Troy. It was built before 1809. Lorenzo was a dedicated public servant; among the many functions he performed were town clerk for seven years, selectman 16 years, postmaster at Troy Center, justice of the peace 35 years, auditor and school committee member. He was elected state senator from the 13th district in 1869. His tax valuation in 1885 was $1160, well above the average $743 for the 299 taxpayers of Troy.
