When things in Germany no longer met the approval of the family, Fredrich packed his little family and on May 1, 1881, sailed for the new land of promise, America. One daughter, Mrs Charles Mehlberg, had already made her home here in the town of Grant, and thus it was that the remaining members of the family came to this country. He was a charter member of the Shawano County Historical Society. During his long career as a painter, Mr Raddant had painted or redecorated almost every house in the city of Shawano. His skill and fine workmanship were known to every home owner in this part of the country. From 1894 to 1896 he served as a member of the city council, and spent one summer as an auxiliary policeman. He also worked in the woods of northern Wisconsin in the fall and winter logging seasons during his early years in America. She was born October 1862 in Shawano, Shawano County, Wisconsin, and died February 25, 1928 in Shawano County, Wisconsin. Notes for ALVINA PAULINE M. WILHELMINA HOLTZ: Copied from the Shawano Journal Thursday March 1, 1928 BUSINESS WOMAN TAKEN BY DEATH Mrs. C.R. Raddant in Business Here for Twenty-Two Years, Funeral Friday Mrs. Charles R. Raddant died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Nommenson, Saturday evening at eleven o'clock. She was sixty-five years old. Death was caused by heart failure. Mrs. Raddant had been sick since November. At that time she was with her daughter in Green Bay, and as she continued to have heart attacks she desired to be brought home. A special train over the Northwestern railway was prepared for her, and she was brought to the Nommenson home. For the first month or so, she suffered greatly, but that feature was overcome. In the last few days, she had appeared to get much better, and Saturday night she was especially well. That evening she joked and laughed with those around her and fifteen minutes before she went she joined in the fun of a joke which she sprung on the others. The end came so quietly and peacefully that it was like the closing of a door. Mrs. Raddant's maiden name was Alvina Holtz. She was born in Watertown in 1862. She went to the schools there in those early days, and when a young woman she came to Shawano. It was during the year of the Peshtigo fire, and the people of Watertown, thinking Shawano was in the fire area, graciously sent her clothes for herself and for those around her whom the Watertown people thought were suffering. She also worked in Merrill for a year or so. At the age of twenty-one, she was married to C.R. Raddant. They ran the hotel near the old depot in the first ward for some years, and then they came uptown and purchased the Simpson Mercantile Co. building on Main Street. Over this business was a business college. These rooms were converted by the Raddants, into sleeping rooms, and for twenty-one years Mrs. Raddant ran a bakery, restaurant, and rooming place in that building. Her place was always well filled with boarders and with transients and she did well with her work. Mr. Raddant died in 1924. After running the place for nearly quarter of a century, Mrs. Raddant sold to the Rusch family who came here from Appleton, and she purchased the Wipperman home and retired to private life. But she had been before the public so long, she was lonesome without activity and so she went to California to visit with her children. She returned last fall and has since then lived with her daughters at Green Bay and with Mrs. Nommenson here in Shawano. The children born to her are: Amanda, Mrs. C.F. Moshier of Green Bay; Olga, Mrs. Fred Nommenson of Shawano; Norma, Mrs. E.L. Rohloff of Green Bay; Esther, and Ray of California. Mrs. Raddant was a woman of most sterling worth, a woman most tenderly beloved by her children, and one whose relations to her many boarders was that of a kindly mother rather than a pay-taker. Literally hundreds of people will remember the home she gave them with tearful appreciation. The funeral will be held tomorrow, Friday, at two at the Nommenson home. Esther and Ray are on their way from California and all of the children will be present. In early years he was a "ciruit-riding" tailor, serving men in logging camps and small communities. At one time he served his ward in Shawano as an alderman. He was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge. Surving are five children, Mrs. Arthur Mahy and Martin Weinig, Balsam Row, Arnold Weinig, Clover Leaf Lakes, and Walter and Miss Laura Weinig, Shawano; a sister, Mrs. Joseph Schweitzer, Aberdeen Washington. 2).CONRAD WEINIG, son of Nicholas and Barbara (Seeph) Weinig, was born November 2, 1860, in Baden, Germany, where both his parents were born, and where his mother. died in 1873, and his father, who is a farmer by occupation, still resides. There were eight children in the family of Nicholas and Barbara Weinig, of whom John resides in Baden, Germany; Martin, in Manistee, Mich.; Conrad is the subject of this sketch; Anna resides,in Baden; Katie is the wife of Mr. Schweinsaddle, of Manistee, Mich.; Jenofofa resides in Manistee, Mich., and Justina in Baden, Germany. Conrad Weinig was reared in Baden, educated in the schools of the Fatherland, apprenticed for three years, and learned his trade at Taubesbischoffsheim. Coming to the United States, he landed in New York City, was four months on Staten Island, and five months in Connecticut; then returned to New York City, where he remained two years and a half, working at his trade. From there he came to Clintonville, Larrabee township, Waupaca Co., Wis., In 1881, where he worked at his trade, on the railroad section, and in the woods, and thence came to Marion, Dupont township, Waupaca county. Here he commenced business in 1882, and in 1883 bought a building 30 x 16 feet, adding to it, until he had one building 50 x 16 feet, and two stories in height, besides two others. In November, 1886, Conrad Weinig was united in marriage with Ottilia Joletz, who was born in Grant township, Shawano county, and they have three children: Laura, Edward and Olga. Mrs. Weinig's father. Frank Joletz, was an early pioneer of Grant township, came to the county in 1866, and lives on the farm. In 1890 Mr. Weinig erected a good two-story house, having main room 16x16 feet, with "L" 16x28, wings 14x16, vestibule 6x6, kitchen 16x16, and pantry 8x8—as fine a residence as can be found in Marion, and in 1894 another store building, 20x46 feet, and two stories in height. He has made a practice of traveling on the road since he began the merchant-tailoring business here, and solicits trade in Shawano and Oconto counties, in this State, also in upper Michigan. He does fine, work, gives a good fit, and guarantees satisfaction. For three years he gave employment to from twelve to fifteen men, and now employs four. In politics Mr. Weinig votes with the Democratic party, and in religious faith he is a Catholic. He is a member of Marion Lodge No. 256, I. 0. 0. F., was one of the charter members, and has been secretary of the lodge. He has seen many changes in this part of the State, has done his share in building up the village of Marion, and has always taken an interest in the prosperity of the town.—[Since the above was written, Mr. Weinig says he has sold out in Marion, and is now located at Shawano.] http://www.rootsweb.com/~wishawan/bioweinig.html More About CONRAD M. More About EDITH MARIE MATHILDA RADDANT: Social Security Number: 578-50-9692 Notes for WILLIAM FREDERICK FERDINAND MEGGERS: Spectroscopist of the Century ........... William F. Meggers This article was originally published in the October 1962 issue of Arcs and Sparks and titled "Spectroscopist of the Month - William F. Meggers." It is being reprinted on the 35th anniversary of that issue, which highlighted the 1st SAS National Conference. While no by-line was given, it is assumed to be the work of the editor, William G. Harkey. Arcs & Sparks proudly presents the story of "Bill" Meggers . . . who is thought of, by many, as the "dean" of American Spectroscopists! Perhaps one of our greatest living demonstrations that Friday the 13th is not unlucky is William F. F. Meggers - one of the true pioneers of Spectroscopy. Flaunting superstition with utter disdain, William Frederick Ferdinand Meggers made his grand entrance on the stage of life Friday, July 13, 1888 .... and it has been one of the luckiest events in the history of our profession. This man, one of the most appreciated for his extensive contribution to the science, was born to descendants of feudal German peasants who earlier immigrated to Wisconsin and became free farmers. At the age of six, William Meggers was sent to a Lutheran parochial school, but in an action foretelling his independence of thought, rebelled after two weeks of strict religious education and was transferred to the Public School system. All during his early schooling, there was no "easy life" for Bill Meggers .... all his spare time was taken up with the chores and other essential farming duties. However, he has never regretted this basic education about foods and animals for it has been most helpful. Claiming that it was not the result of his innate brilliance, but simply by dint of study, he graduated as valedictorian of his high school class in 1906 .... and received a tuition scholarship to Ripon College. His college days became the greatest challenge in his unfolding life, for Bill Meggers was long on ability and ambition but mighty short on money. He tucked the scholarship under his arm, picked up any odd jobs he could manage, organized a dance orchestra in which he was a triple-threat man (violin, trumpet and slide trombone), and earned the necessary money to get through school. In fact, William F. F. Meggers was the first of numerous kinsfolk to acquire a college diploma. While like many mothers, William's had hoped that he would study medicine or law and end up with what, at the time was considered a position enjoying the greatest prestige on the American scene .... but her son had developed other ideas, a practice, incidentally, he was to continue throughout his entire life. At Ripon College, Professor William H. Barber, who taught Physics there from 1906 to 1946, had a profound effect on our young student. Through his inspiring teaching, Bill Meggers majored in Physics, received a Bachelor's degree in 1910, and spent the following year as Professor Barber's first graduate assistant. The following year was a real rough one as he slaved as a graduate student and laboratory assistant at the renown University of Wisconsin .... but he earned much needed credits toward a Master's degree. About this time, his money problems again weighed heavily upon him so he became an instructor in Physics at the then recently founded Carnegie Institute of Technology at Pittsburgh. During his second year at Carnegie Institute he happened to read a paper which changed the whole course of his professional life. Authored by Niels Bohr, it was titled "On The Constitution of Atoms and Molecules", and proposed some novel postulates to explain spectra. It was only a short time after this that Bill Meggers went down to the Pittsburgh Post Office and spent two days writing a Civil Service examination. As the pattern of his life began to unfold in distinct form, he received an appointment as Laboratory Assistant to the late Kelvin Burns, who was at the time the sole spectroscopist at the National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. At the NBS, from 1914 to the present time Bill Meggers has persistently followed a plan of long-range systematic research in optical spectroscopy, including improvements in standard wavelengths, accurate descriptions of atomic spectra, their application to identification and determination of chemical elements, measurement of spectral line intensities, and other interrelated studies. During World War 1, Meggers continued both his professional and educational progress at accelerated rates. Some of his important projects covered the measuring of standard wavelengths with interferometers, photographing spectra beyond visible red, demonstration of the use of red-sensitized emulsions for photography from airplanes, other pioneer spectrochemical analyses, measuring many indexes of refraction of the atmosphere .... all of this while earning a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University. As an active member of the International Astronomical Union's Commission on Standard wavelengths during the past 40 years, he was the main contributor to secondary standards of wavelength from an iron arc measured relative to the primary standard (red radiation from cadmium). Since 1947, he provided an improved primary standard (Meggers Mercury 198 Lamp) and superior secondary standards emitted by an electrodeless lamp containing thorium iodide (with R. W. Stanley). Meggers' early efforts to extend spectrographic records toward infrared finally led to a new octane in photographic observations that all enjoy today. His experimental results on refractive indexes of air (published with C. G. Peters in 1918) served a third of a century for the derivation of vacuum wave numbers from wavelengths measured in standard air; they were replaced in 1960 by a "Table of Wave Numbers" (with C. D. Coleman and W. R. Boxman) which is expected to last another generation-if not longer. Additionally, he was a pioneer in spectrochemistry in the new world, demonstrating its usefulness in the Department of Commerce for the analysis of metals and alloys .... to the Treasury Department for testing proof gold .... and to the Department of Justice for detecting crime. A paper on "Practical Spectrographic Analysis" published in 1922 (with C. C. Kiess and F. J. Stimson) is generally credited with reviving interest in chemical spectroscopy in which some 3,000 United States Laboratories are presently engaged. Also, many years of service to Chemical Abstracts led to publication of "An Index To The Literature On Spectrochemical Analysis" (with Bourdon F. Scribner). But, Meggers was constantly concerned about the poor quality of spectroscopic data (wavelengths, intensities, atomic energy origin) and the empiricism in suggested methods of spectrochemical analysis. Thus simultaneously with the improvement in standard wavelengths, he tried to provide better descriptions of atomic and ionic spectra, especially of newly discovered concentrated, or artificial elements such as hafnium, rhenium, technetium, promethium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, actinium and the like. Since 1922, great effort has been spent on deriving atomic energy levels from structural analyses of optical spectra, culminating in the publication of three volumes of "Atomic Energy Levels" critically compiled by Charlotte E. Moore. Finally, it became imperative to this man to make a wholesale calibration of discrete radiant powers which nearly 30 years later led to the publication of "Tables of Spectral-Line Intensities" (with C. H. Corliss and B. F. Scribner) that, for the first time, presented measured intensities of 39,000 lines (2000 A° to 9000 A°) observed in direct-current arcs exciting each of 70 metals when diluted 1000 fold in copper. In addition to calibrated intensity and spectral number, the authors hoped to give the energy levels responsible for each spectral line so that these tables would be most useful for trace analysis and for greater accuracy in quantitative determinations by selecting homologous pairs of analysis and internal-standard lines with similar excitation characteristics. Unfortunately, the energy levels for 14,000 strong lines (mostly from rare earth elements) are still unknown, so William Meggers has dedicated the rest of his life to seeking more of these. This scientific-oriented life has not been without its awards both numerous and of highest nature. Only in the past few years, for instance, the Optical Society made him an Honorary Member and in 1947 awarded him the Ives Medal .... the U. S. Department of Commerce bestowed upon him, in 1948, the Exceptional Service Gold Medal .... the Franklin Institute gave the Eliot Cresson Medal .... the New York Section of the SAS made the first award of its annual medal to him .... and, in 1954, the National Academy of Science elected him into membership. These are the marks of devotion to cause, meticulous and laborious work, brilliance of creative concept that have given William Meggers greater satisfaction than any amount of money could buy. If you ask this great man what he enjoys most, he probably would say, "Why, that's easy it's the fun of contributing to the advancement of spectroscopy". The "dean" of spectroscopists, together with his thoroughly charming wife and three children, has enjoyed many hobbies. One of the most prized, and enjoyed, is his participation in musical offerings on either the violin, trumpet, or slide trombone, which never cease to bring back fond memories of his frugal years at Ripon College. To diversify, he thoroughly enjoys collecting rocks, minerals, relics of the Stone Age, and has quite an imposing array. To witness the extent of Bill Meggers' avocations, in 1942 the Meggers family dedicated a private museum of Science and Civilization which he maintains in his comfortable home. A "seventh heaven" to the collector's heart, the museum is now filled with hundreds of historical pieces including lamps, cameras, stereoscopes, typewriters, telephones, patent models, music boxes, phonographs, records, radios, historical movie films, and scores of other items that bring joy to the hearts of all its visitors. Of the many "greats" in spectroscopy, none has given Arcs & Sparks more of a privilege to feature. We feel that William F. F. Meggers is a truly successful man, a whole man, a man whose constructive approach to life is reflected in his own philosophical reply, "Whatever my achievements and accumulations, they are but symbols of the joy of living in this age of extraordinary progress in science, technology, and culture". We humbly, and proudly salute WILLIAM F. F. MEGGERS .... Spectroscopist Extraordinary! Notes for LOIS MOESER: Bungener, Lois Green Bay Press-Gazette (Sep/12/2006) Lois M. Bungener, 95, Sister Bay, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006. She was born Aug. 26, 1911, in Green Bay to Charles and Amanda Moeser. Lois graduated from West High School in Green Bay and earned an education degree from the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. After graduation, she returned to Green Bay to teach high school English. On June 4, 1936, Lois married Karl Bungener, who had immigrated to Green Bay from Heiden, Germany, in 1927. She became a full-time mother to their three children, returning to teaching after they were in school. In 1953, while on a family trip to visit relatives in Germany, she became interested in antiques and from then on that was her passion. She became an active member of the Green Bay/De Pere Antiquarian Society, frequently doing antique shows around the Great Lakes states. After his retirement from Kaap's Restaurant, Karl joined her in this adventure. They had wonderful fun and success selling those antiques she had so carefully chosen. With Karl, a friend or one of her children, many times by herself, she traveled every year to England and Germany, searching for those special treasures. When asked to speak about her business, she spoke knowledgeably and humorously about antiques and collecting. She was heard to say: "Everything is for sale — including the children!" For 35 summers she had an antique shop across from the public beach in Ephraim. What a great way for her whole family to work and enjoy summer vacations in Door County! Lois was a member of both the National and Wisconsin Antique Dealers Association (Secretary of Wisconsin), the Green Bay/De Pere Anti-quarian Society, the League of Women Voters, the Ephraim Historical Foundation, Heritage Hill in Green Bay, the Neighborly Club and the Pan-Hellenic Society (president 1946 to 1947). Life was never dull around Lois. Her keen mind, sharp wit and sense of humor were highly prized by family and friends. She was an avid reader, loved her bridge, card games, and puzzles —any kind of a challenge to keep her mind sharp! Lois loved her grandchildren, especially when they were old enough to play games and interact with her — and how they loved her attention! She and Karl traveled extensively; other than Germany and England, they vowed never to visit the same place twice. What experiences they had! Lois is survived by her children, Betty (Dave) Chomeau, Ephraim and St. Louis, Mo.; Susie (Skip) Samson, Sister Bay and Palm Coast, Fla.; and Chris (Kirsten) Bungener, Ephraim; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Rosalie Moeser, Potomac Falls, Va.; and Kathe Dyck, Muenster, Germany; cousin Dorothy Murphy, Shawano, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Karl; sister, Anona Moeser; brother, Ralph Moeser; son-in-law, Hal Tasker; and most of her friends. A memorial service will be held in October; date to be announced. Memorials in Lois' memory may be given to the Ephraim Historical Foundation, Box 165, Ephraim, WI 54211, or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staffs at Woodview/Scandia Village and Hearthside Cordial Care for their kindness, loving care, and friendship for Loie during her last few years.
