69) Hamilton DILLON (c1840-1898)
|
|

This photo of Section 1 Lot 1, Clarington Cemetery, Monroe Co., Ohio, was sold to P. Dillon possibly in the 1880s or 1890s, and was believed to have been the first lot sold in this cemetery, according to "Butch" Rush. Mr. Rush possesses and maintains perhaps the only cemetery plot of this cemetery by virtue of his connection to the local mortuary business. The original cemetery lots were 20x20 and were purchased for $6.00 per lot. The large lot size was no doubt to accommodate the large families of that period. This grave marker is believed to be that of Peter Dillon's son, Hamilton Dillon, who took his own life in 1898. Hamilton Dillon is listed as "age 25, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark hair" at the time of his Civil War discharge, March 8, 1866, Columbus, OH, 77th Regiment, Ohio OVI. By virtue of his Civil War experience he is beneficiary of a new flag placed annually on his gravesite according to Mr Rush. He married Sarah Ellen Swords in 1965, but we have no information regarding any children for this couple. There may be additional graves on this lot as surface variations suggest the possibility of several irregular depressions. However, no additional grave markers are present. The weathered limestone marker may have included the name of his wife, but this is only speculation. A closeup photo of the gravestone inscription is posted elsewhere on this site.
