Lohrville department 63 years old
LOHRVILLE ---- The Lohrville Fire Department started in 1916 with wooden spoke wheels driven by a gas engine.
The present building was constructed in 1916 by Kramp Construction Company, Berlin. A large cistern under the building is used to fill the tank trucks. If enough rain is not collected in the cistern, water is pumped from across the street to fill up the cistern.
Joe Secora and Emil Larson both served as fire chiefs at one time. Mario Passarelli became fire chief in 1938 and served until 1974. In 1974 Harley Gutche Sr. became the fire chief, a position he presently holds.
Gutche and Mike Knudtson rebuilt a tank in 1975. The truck was purchased from Edward Schmidtke, Wautoma. The department, which presently has 39 volunteers, has four vehicles.
Passarelli, recalls a fire in Redgranite, which the Lohrville Fire Department assisted in fighting, where seven building in a row burned down, including the opera house. The Lohrville department pumped water from Willow Creek to Main Street to help battle the flames.
Passarelli also noted the Lohrville department assisted in preventing the Chicago Pickle Company in Redgranite from being wiped out by fire.
The department now serves only the Lohrville, but at one time it also served the town of Warren.
