      39. Hannah Bates, born Abt. 1740; died Aft. 1790. She was the daughter of 78. John Bates VI and 79. Elizabeth Alford.

I, Samuel Fuqua of Charlotte County, of perfect health, mind, & memory, but calling to mind the mortality of my body

To my wife Hannah Fuqua - slaves Vall, Harey, and old Jude, for her lifetime. After her death, said slaves to be sold, and the money to be equally divided between all my children.

To my daughter Anne Fuqua - slaves Charles, Nell, Sam, Liddy, and Renshall.

To my daughter Tabitha Fuqua - Kelep, Winny, Cane, Luce, and Jude daughter of Old Jude.

To my daughter Catherine Fuqua - slaves John, Will, Nance, Fan, & old Jim.

To my daughter Hanty - Jim, Emy, Jenny, Abram, & Mill.

To my daughter Francis Fuqua - slaves Obey, Doll, Mary, Isaac, & Squier.

To my son Samuel Fuqua - slaves Tom, Cate, Morris, Ben, and Old Sam, together with a tract of land bounded by Staunton River at the mouth of Wolf Trap [Creek?], Joseph Fuqua, Coles Ferry Road, Seth Wards Road, Neeleis line, the edge of the low ground upon Staunton.

The rest of my land and the rest of my estate, consisting of household goods, debts, & moveable effects to be sold, the money to be equally divided between my daughters Anne, Tabitha, Catherine, Hanty, and Francis Fuqua, and paid to them by my executors on the day of their marriage or as soon as they reach age 21 years.

Executors: my wife Hannah Fuqua, Thomas Mackey, Joel Watkins, William Morton, and Joseph Morton.

At Charlotte County Court of Jan 4, 1790, the will of Samuel Fuqua dec'd was exhibited in court by Thomas Mackey, one of the executors, and proved by the oaths of witness William Hubard. At Feb 1, 1790 court, the will was further proved by the oath of Cornelius Coyle, and OR. Said executor was granted a certificate for obtaining probate; William Hubard, Richard M Booker, John Fuqua, & Joseph Fuqua were his securities. Liberty is reserved to the other executors to join in the probate when they shall think fit.

  iv.   Catherine Fuqua, born Abt. 1776 in Halifax County, Virginia; married Andrew Young December 15, 1802 in Charlotte County, Virginia.
  19 v.   Tabitha Fuqua, born 1777 in Virginia; died March 6, 1834 in Shelby County, Kentucky; married Colonel Richard Marot Booker Jr. February 2, 1795 in Charlotte County, Virginia.
  vi.   Samuel Fleming Fuqua, born Abt. 1787 in Halifax County, Virginia; died November 1820 in Charlotte County, Virginia.


      44. John Wells Sr., born in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He was the son of 88. Daniel Wells and 89. Susannah.

  22 i.   John Wells Jr., born 1791 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland; died January 18, 1843 in Washington, DC; married Hannah Mayo October 25, 1810 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
  ii.   Daniel Wells, born Abt. 1795 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland; died September 14, 1814 in War of 1812 near Baltimore, Maryland.


      46. James Mayo, born April 4, 1765 in All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland; died Bef. December 1794 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He was the son of 92. Joseph Mayo Sr. and 93. Henrietta Massey. He married 47. Susanna Lusby July 11, 1786 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

      47. Susanna Lusby, born Abt. 1767 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland; died Bef. December 1797 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She was the daughter of 94. Robert Lusby and 95. Deborah Lee.

Notes for James Mayo:
James Mayo died young before thirty years of age.

James Mayo was listed in the 1790 census as having 2 males above 16, 1 male less than 16, 1 female and 5 slaves. His brother, John Mayo, made him the executor of his will and left him farm animals ( Anne Arundel Co. Intestates liber JG1, folio 66). His father, Joseph Mayo, 1st, in his will ( Anne Arundel Co. Wills liber TG1, folio 309) left part of his land described as part of Selby's Marsh as follows: "begin the division line at the north end of the NW by N line being the first line of the whole tract and running thence across the said tract to the head of the easternmost branch of the cove called the Spring Cove where the main Road down the neck melded with the shore. All that part of Selby's Marsh lying on the southeast side of the division and on the northeast and east of the aforesaid road to belong to my son, James."

One third to Richard Battee, who intermarried with the deceased's widow Susanna; thirds of the remaining balance to children: William Mayo, Hannah Mayo + John Mayo.

Liber JG #2, folio 142: Mrs. Ann Jennifer + Mr. Joseph Jennifer administrators of Henrietta Mayo late of Anne Arundel County deceased. June 1, 1810. Sureties: William Alexander + William Johnson. Legatees: Ann Jennifer, Sarah Williamson, Henrietta Norris, Margaret Lee + the heirs of James Mayo: William Mayo, Hannah Mayo and John Mayo.


  Notes for Susanna Lusby:
... was left a widow with three children, two boys. She married a Methodist preacher (Richard Battee). He was made guardian for the children and treated them most unkindly. They had no education, no advantages.
