9. RUTH5 DORSEY (EDWARD4, EDWARD3, JOHN2, EDWARD1) was born 1726, and died 1814 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She married VACHEL DORSEY, son of JOHN DORSEY and HONOR STAFFORD. He was born October 20, 1726 in Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and died 1798 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Ruth Dorsey was the daughter of Edward and Sarah (Todd) Dorsey. In her will made December 24, 1813 and proved May 27, 1814 she left:

To son Johnsa Dorsey, silver spoons

To daughter Ruth Owings, wearing apparel, bed and furniture

To granddaughter Eliza Owings, a negro boy in case her father will pay 30 pounds to assist in the maintenance of son Levin

To son Levin Dorsey, 30 pounds for his maintenance

To granddaughter Ruth Maria Dorsey a negro in case her father Johnsa Dorsey will pay 30 pounds to assist in the maintenance of son Levin

To granddaughters Maria and Caroline, and May Dorsey, a negro each in case their fathers will assist in the maintenance of son Levin

To granddaughter Rachel Dorsey, 15 pounds

To granddaughter Elizabeth Frost, residuary legatee

All money from Samuel Owings and all property to be used in Maintenance of son Levin

ACHEL DORSEY:
Vachel Dorsey, son of John Dorsey and Honor his wife, married his kinswoman, Ruth, the daughter of Edward and Ruth (Todd) Dorsey and the granddaughter of Lancelot and Elizabeth (Rockhold) Todd.

There is no record of his subscribing to the Oath of Allegiance in Anne Arundel County, but inasmuch as his plantations were partly in Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties, he can be placed as the Vachel Dorsey who took the oath before Judge Edward Cockey of Baltimore County who filed his returns on February 28, 1778. (Baltimore. Co. Oaths, box 3, folder 3)

In 1750 Vachel Dorsey received a gift from his father of a tract of 800 acres called Belt's Hills and seven negroes.

On December 20, 1752, Vachel Dorsey bought 111 acres of Invasion from John Hood of Anne Arundel County. (A.A. Co. Deeds R.B. No. 3, f. 599)

A tract called Anything was patented to Vachel Dorsey in 1759, and in 1762 and 1763, The Addition, Dorsey's Industry, Addition to Vachel's Purchase, Young Man's Folly, and Dorsey's Interest were patented to him. (Patents B.C. & C.S. No. 10, f. 237; No.. 17, f. 257; No. 20, folios 47, 60)

On December 1, 1763, Vachel Dorsey sold Dorsey's Thicket of 300 acres to John Dorsey, Ruth his wife, signed. (A.A. Co. Deeds B.B. No. 3, f. 91) In 1770 Vachel Dorsey and his bro-ther Edward Dorsey bought 3 tracts of land, Mistake, Dispute Ended, and Yate's Contrivance from Nathan Dorsey. (A.A. Co. Deeds I.B. and J.B. No. 1, f. 322)

In 1786 Vachel Dorsey gave to his son Johnsa Dorsey 500 acres of land, and to his son Elias Dorsey, Industry, containing 473 acres. (Balt. Co. W.C. No. V, folios 297, 344) In 1790 he also gave to his son Johnsa Dorsey, Baltimore County, 564 acres, including tracts, John's Chance, Polly's Inheritance, Addition, Vachel's Part of Dorsey's Thickett. (BaIt.Co. Deeds W.G.. No. EE, f. 464)

Vachel's will made March 26, 1790 and probated March 9, 1798 left:

To son Levin Dorsey, Dorsey's Interest, 30 acres, Salophia, 100 acres and Lost Sheep, which lies partly in Baltimore County and partly in Anne Arundel County

To son Edward Dorsey, Belt's Hills, 790acres, part of Invasion, 111 acres

To daughter Ruth Owings, tracts Doxterity, 580 acres, Young Man's Folly, 44 acres, Vachel's Purchase, 24 acres, Addition to Vachel's Purchase, 25 acres, Ely's Lot, 50 acres. If no issue to descend to granddaughters Ruth and Maria, daughters of sons Elias and Vachel Dorsey

To daughter Ruth Owings, 5 negroes. To granddaughter Elizabeth Frost, a negro boy

Rest of estate to be divided equally among children, Johnsa, Elias, Vachel, Edward, and Ruth Owings.

10. BENJAMIN5 LAWRENCE (SUSANNAH4 DORSEY, JOHN3, EDWARD2, EDWARD1) was born May 17, 1741 in Dorsey's Grove, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and died March 5, 1814 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He married URATH RANDALL OWINGS January 28, 1762 in Maryland, daughter of SAMUEL OWINGS and URATH RANDALL. She was born June 26, 1738 in Baltimore County, Maryland, and died September 17, 1807 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

To son Samuel Lawrence 220¾ acres on south side of the Sinking Fork of Beargrass, purchased from Col. Frederick Geiger, also land conveyed to testator by Silas M. Noel, about 98 acres, part of survey sold by Sheriff as property of Charles Quincy; also $1709.19.

To son Leavin Lawrence tract of land purchased from Yelverton P. Wells; also 500 acres in Ohio County, Virginia, on drafts of Middle Island Creek, provided he pays to estate $1209.25 within two years.

To daughter Susannah [Dorsey] Williamson, 500 acres of land in Ohio County, Virginia, on waters of Middle Island Creek, and $1600.

To daughter Elizabeth Hynes, 500 acres in same location, and $4000; also negroes.

To daughter Rebecca Winchester, $10.00.

To grandchildren Benjamin Winchester, Lavinia Snowden, Olivia, Amanda, Polly D., under sixteen, Louisa, under sixteen, and William Chambers Winchester, under twenty-one, the plantation on which Richard Winchester now lives, 200 acres, part of 300 acres purchased of Col. Frederick and Jacob Geiger on north side of the Sinking Fork of Beargrass, also on north side of a new road cut leading to Isaac Fenley's, to be sold when youngest child becomes twenty-one.

To granddaughter Polly Chambers, the other 100 acres of this 300-acre tract.

To grandson Benjamin Winchester, 500 acres in Ohio County, Virginia, on waters of Middle Island Creek. Mentions William Winchester, Sr. of Baltimore.

To grandchildren Polly Hobbs, Matilda L. Dorsey, Elias Dorsey, Leaven L. Dorsey, Benjamin L. Dorsey, Urath O. Dorsey, each $400, and negro.
