Descendants of John Dever

Generation No. 2

2. THOMAS2 DEVER (JOHN1) was born October 22, 1842 in Bloomfield, Jefferson Co., Ohio, and died June 11, 1922 in Junction City, Kansas. He married LOUISA MEEK March 12, 1865 in Cass Township, Sullivan Co., Indiana, daughter of SAMUEL MEEK and ELIZABETH BOTTS.

Notes for T
HOMAS DEVER:
The Dever family moved to Sullivan County, Indiana prior to the Civil War. Thomas enlisted in Co. D, 8th Ill. Infantry on August 10, 1861 and was honorably discharged at Vicksburg, MS August 19, 1864. He was wounded twice in battle. Also serving in the Civil War were all three of Thomas' brothers, as well as their father.                                                 In 1870 the Dever family was among a group of colonist families who traveled to Kansas from Indiana by wagon train and settled near what is now Upland in Fragrant Hill Township, Dickinson County. In 1880 the family resettled in Junction City. While living in Junction City, Thomas Dever practiced his profession as a surveyor and engineer. He was active in the G.A.R. After the age of forty, he read law and on Feb. 8, 1888, the State Supreme Court admitted him to practice law in the state of Kansas. He became one of the community's leading citizens, holding several county and municipal offices, including those of county engineer, city engineer and city attorney. He served Junction City as its mayor from 1911-1912. Upon his death, Junction City honored him by a published resolution issued by its mayor and commissioners, by closing its municipal offices during the time of his funeral and by lowering to half mast the flags flying over its municipal buildings, presumably the first time that this latter honor had been accorded to a Junction City resident. Thomas Dever was buried at Liberty Cemetery near Upland beside his wife and their daughter Libby.
