Thomas was discharged a private of Captain Van Sickles, Co. G, 4th Regiment of the Missouri State Militia Volunteers on February 4, 1865 in St. Louis Missouri. He was enrolled on December 18, 1861. This document states that he was born in Giles? County Tenn. Document states that he was 29 years old, 5 ft. 9 in. tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. His occupation at enrollment was listed as "blacksmith". He served 3 years, 2 months and 2 days.

Thomas was 45 years old and his occupation was listed as farming. These dates do not match other records.

Info from family research of Betty Jones:
Thomas supplied his own mule when he enrolled in the Army. This mule fell on him during the Battle of Lexington at Lexington, Mo. Thomas settled and raised his family on the old family homestead near Orla, Mo.
Thomas got his right hand caught in a thrashing machine and it had to be amputated at the wrist.
