To this union one daughter was born. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Virgil is survived by his wife, Verba, of the home; three sons, Jack Jones, Lenexa, KS., Kenneth Jones, Springfield, MO., and Larry Jones, Kansas City, KS., one daughter, Phyllis Bruce, San Antonio, TX.; one brother Vernon Jones, Falcon, MO.; two sisters, Barbara Chastain, Lebanon, MO. and Flossie Shamel, Falcon, MO.; fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great grand children, and a host of other relatives and friends. He worked throughout his life on the farm and also did carpentry work. He was also employed for thirteen years for a private contractor at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Virgil had made peace with God and attended the Baptist Church. Earlier in his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. The farm was very meaningful to him and he especially liked working in the timber. He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a friend to all who knew him. |

From funeral service records: Barbara Leora Jones Chastain , daughter of Amos W. and Ira Claxton Jones, was born January 24, 1918, near Agnes, Missouri. She departed this life Monday, June 9, 1997, in Balanced Care Lebanon South, Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of seventy nine years, four months, and fifteen days. On February 29, 1940, she was united in marriage to Otis Henry Chastain, and to this union one daughter and three sons were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of twenty nine years, Otis, on September 18, 1969; a grandson, Brian D. Chastain, on December 30, 1990; and three brothers, Virgil, Vernon, and Paris Jones. Barbara is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Charles Schneider, of Lebanon, Missouri; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Becky Chastain, David and Marietta Chastain, and Jon and Becky Chastain, all of Lebanon, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Scott Schneider, and his wife, Susan; Brice Schneider, and his wife, Brandi; Michael, Jeffery, Jason, Derick, and Tyler Chastain, and Brandon and Brittany Mizer; four great-grandchildren, Trenton, Mason, Zachary, and Shelby Schneider; a sister and brother-in-law, Flossie and Leland Shamel, of Competition, Missouri, three sisters-in-law, Nola Jones, of Competition, Missouri, Verba Jones, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Ruth Jones of Stewartsville, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was raised in the Competition and Agnes communities and graduated from Competition High School. When she and Otis married, they made their home in Laclede County and lovingly raised their family. After Otis passed away in 1969, she worked for the Office of Equal Opportunity program, and then was a cook for the Lebanon R III Schools until her retirement in 1983. Barbara was saved at an early age and, at the time of her passing, was a member of the Orla Baptist Church, where Otis had helped construct the church building. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, and growing beautiful flowers in the summertime, and sewing and piecing quilts in the wintertime. Through the years, she had made quilts for each of her grandchildren and several for her children. She also took great pride in her family and her home. Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all those who new her. Barbara was buried at McBride Cemetery and after burial services a dinner was prepared by the members of the Orla Baptist Church for family members.
