Notes for John Thomas Vance: Obituary as printed in the "Lebanon Record" Thursday, February 1, 1968: John T. Vance Funeral services for John T. Vance, 87, of Lebanon, were held at 2 PM Sunday, January 21, 1968 in Palmer-Pickering Chapel with the Rev. Carlton Knight officiating. Burial was in the Lebanon City Cemetery under the direction of Palmer-Pickering. Music was furnished by Wilbur Hillme accompanied by David McClure. Escorts were Ernest, Jimmy, and Bill Long; Gene, Mike, and Robert Vance. John T. Vance, son of Eliza Janne Smittle and William Frank Vance, was born in Laclede County Missouri, November 7, 1880 and died January 19, 1968. Mr. Vance was employed with the City of Lebanon for more than forty years before retiring. On September 14, 1899 he was married to Lutitia Jones, near Competition, MO. He professed his faith in Christ and was baptized at an early age. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Zora Long, Mrs. Marie Brandt and Mrs. Ora Truelove all of Lebanon; Four sons, Monroe and John G., Lebanon; Joe of Rolla, MO., Ivan of Dixon, Mo., nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 8, 1952 and four sons, Wadie, Herman, William Edward and Jesse; also one grandson, Adley Vance. |

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer, on April 10, 1974; six sisters, two infants, Julia Monks, Alma Hughes, Cora McClanahan, and Lura Pearcy; and two brothers, Hiram, and Fred Shockley. Sue, as she was called by her family and friends, is survived by five nieces, Fred Moore, and Gwendolyn Hurst, both of Lebanon, Missouri, Mildred DeNier, of Banning, California, Kathleen Moffat, of Lake Sherwood, Missouri, and Genevieve Flarety, of Peoria, Illinois; three nephews, Harold Shockley, of Hannah City, Illinois, Carl Shockley, of Hemet, California, and Wayne Shockley, of Port Hueneme, California; a number of great nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-great nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born and raised in the Brownfield community area, and at the age of twenty, moved to Lebanon. After she and Elmer were married, they made their home near Competition, Missouri for several years, before returning to Lebanon, where she lived the rest of her life. Throughout the years, she was a devoted homemaker to her husband and family. She professed her faith in Christ as a young woman, and united with the Brownfield Christian Church. She was a charter member of the Competition Chapter #500 Order of the Eastern Star, and served in many official capacities in that organization. When the Competition chapter united with the Lebanon Chapter #259, she continued to be an active member. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, crocheting, doing needlework projects, and baking. She was a loving and caring Christian lady who will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all of her family and many friends. |
