Notes for Jehu H. Hoke: The following information is from an article written by Lois Roper Beard that appeared in the Lebanon, Mo. newspaper. We are not sure of the date. The article featured a picture of the Hoke log cabin and a picture of Jehu and French Hoke standing in front of this house. We have copies of this article. We are not sure of the source of information for this article. In March of 1892 Jehu Hoke and his wife Celia Lively Hoke, decided after receiving encouraging letters from relatives, to follow them to Missouri. Leaving their home “the old Harper place” on top of Jones Mountain, near Organ Cave, West Virginia, they arrived in Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri, by train when the youngest of their four children was three weeks old. They went to the home of relatives near Agness, Mo. They bought 80 wooded acres nearby and built a one-room log house. Years later they added another room and porches on two sides of the house. They farmed the land here. Two daughters were born to them in the next three years which completed their family of five girls and one boy. Shortly after the birth of the last child, Celia became ill. After months of suffering she died, leaving Jehu with six small children, the oldest nine year and the youngest 18 months. After Celia was laid to rest in McBride Cemetery, the motherless family was taken to the home of a neighbor “Aunt Jude” and spent three weeks there. Although Aunt Jude was the mother of 15, there was still room for others. After three weeks they moved back to their home. Ora and Launa took turns going to school while the other cared for the smaller children. When the baby was three years old they all went to school, taking the baby with them. When Ora was eleven she began sewing for the family. She graduated from the eighth grade and attended a term of normal at Conway, receiving her teachers certificate and then taught several years before her marriage. French left home when he was sixteen to find work. So did Launa, who found work at the Vance Hotel in Lebanon, Mo., leaving Jehu with three little girls. Uncle Jehu, as everyone called him, was known as a hard working man. Neighbors many times remarked that he would die with a grubbing hoe in his hands. He thought nothing of asking the girls to help him with the field work. They all knew how to stack wheat, plow corn, or put up hay. Uncle Jehu’s life was given in sacrifice for his family. He was a pillar in the community, a leader in the church, and an honest hard-working man. He lived the last twenty years of his life alone in the same log house after the children were all gone to make homes of their own. In his last days, because of an illness, he went to the home of a daughter, Launa and her husband, John Bostie, where he passed away on December 24, 1942. |
