* The following information is from a document and research done by Woodrow Claxton (1916-1979) who is the great grandson of James Anderson Claxton (1798-1871).
1) James was born on the road from North Carolina to Bedford County, Tennessee in 1798.
2) He served with Andrew Jackson in expedition against the Creek Indians.
3) He also served under Jackson in the Black Hawk War.
4) James & Temperance were the parents of all of the descendants of the Claxtons of Wright Co. Missouri.
5) James was called "Uncle Jimmy" by many of the other Claxtons.
6) Some of their family lived in Unionville and Bell Buckle Tennessee.
7) James was allowed a pension for services rendered in the Black Hawk War; but did not draw it.
8) James and his family moved from Bedford County, TN to Springfield, MO in a covered wagon in 1853.
9) They farmed one year on land where Drury College, Springfield, MO. now stands. They then moved to Elk Creek Township in Wright County, MO where they homesteaded and bought land. They remained there the rest of their lives.
10) James and Temperance were both buried in Elk Creek (Durbin) Cemetery in Wright County, MO.

The following information is from a document and research done by Woodrow Claxton (1916-1979) who is the great grandson of James Claxton (1798-1871).
1) Temperance's last name was also spelled Rathler in some records.
2) The History of Wright County (1889) shows her last name to be spelled Ratcliff.
3) It was also spelled Rackley in other government records.
4) Records indicate her fathers name was Ratcliff and he fought in the Revolutionary War.

J. C. CLAXTON’s birth occurred April 12, 1830, in Tennessee. He is a son of James and Temperance (Ratler) Claxton, born in 1802 and 1812, and died about 1866 and 1877, respectively. Our subject was the sixth of thirteen children. He assisted his father until twenty-one years of age, and up to the present time has followed farming. Annie E. Jones, who was born in Bedford County, Tenn., September 16, 1836, became his wife August 16, 1854. Their union has resulted in the birth of nine children: Temperance Mahala, Amanda Tennessee, Philander Priestly, Elizabeth Allen (who died in 1863), James Jonas, Minerva Jane, Melvina Jones, Ophelia Adaline and Alice Cassander. Mr. Claxton is an enterprising farmer, and a man who wields much influence in the community in which he resides. Although his early education was somewhat limited, he has always taken considerable interest in the education of the rising generation. He has given all his children liberal educations, and his eldest son is completing his education in Europe - Leipzig College, Germany. Mr. Claxton is a Republican in politics, and up to the date of the late war was an old-line Whig.

  Notes for Noah Claxton:
* Noah was a businessman, who had a store on the square in Hartville, MO. He and Ophelia (his second wife) lived south of Hartville on a large farm, known as the Claxton Plantation, where he raised some of the best mules in the state. At one time he was the largest taxpayer in Wright County. A Democrat, he ran for the office of county treasurer in 1862 and was defeated. Hartville suffered a great deal during the Civil War. Noah enlisted in the 73rd Enrolled Missouri Militia. He was captured by the Confederates but was released near West Plains and returned to Hartville. He is buried in Steele Memorial Cemetery in Hartville, MO.

George "Uncle Mike" Coleman Claxton never married. He lived with his brother, John Wesley and family. He owned a lot of land and was considered a rich landowner in his day. He was a very strong man and a hard worker. He used to carry a lead bullet in his mouth and chew on it to keep from craving water. He only drank when he watered his horses. He said he could bind as much wheat as two men could cradle. Uncle Mike was about five feet six inches tall and wore a number five shoe.
During the Civil War he served in the 73rd Enrolled Missouri Militia on the Union side.

* The following information is from a document and research done by Woodrow Claxton (1916-1979) who is the great grandson of James Claxton (1798-1871).
1) George Coleman was called "Uncle Mike" Claxton.
2) He was a bachelor who stayed with his brother John Wesley Claxton and his family most of the time. He also lived by himself some.
3) He owned quite a lot of land and was considered a rich land owner in his day.
4) He raised hay, corn, oats, wheat, horses, cattle, mules etc.
5) Before he died he gave land to Effie, Viola, Charley, Andy, Harve, Marve, and John. There was probably others as well.
6) He was a very strong man and a hard worker.
7) He used to carry a lead bullet in his mouth and chew on it to keep from craving water. It was said that he only drank water when he watered his horses that he was working.
8) He said that he could bind as much wheat as two men could cradle or he could cradle as much as two men could bind.
9) He was about 5 ft. 6 in. tall and wore a size 5 shoe. Woodrow had a picture of him.
10) Once one of his fine colts got down in a shed of his barn and could not get up without the wagon being removed. George (Uncle Mike) managed to get under the wagon and carried it on his back out of the shed to free the colt. This wagon was a high-wheeled, iron tired Springfield wagon.
