Notes for JESSE J. BRASWELL: From Website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~westxan/np69.htm#iin5505 From Ray Sasser: "Jesse Braswell (Jr.) [Warren's father] never left Brunswick County, so you won't confuse him with any Jesses in Tennessee. However, John Braswell (son of Jesse Sr. and Lucy) had a son named Jesse J. Braswell who did go to Tennessee; he is the one who lived in Fayette County and died there in 1880. His name appears at least once in Tennessee as "Jesse G. Braswell" and also as "Jesse Bradswell." - 1840-1844 Fayette County Court Minute Book B (Tennessee) listed a Jesse Braswell with various spellings of Jesse Brasswell, Jerus S Brassell (the double S is underlined to indicate a question of the proper spelling), and also I J Braswell. The three notations all indicate he was a hand for working the Stage Road in Fayette county 'from 15 mile post to the county line'. This would have been the last 15 miles of state road before entering Shelby county. Also listed as hands are Samuel and Phillip Seward. There are several Jesse Braswells and I am still researching which is which. |

Notes for JESSE M. BRASWELL: According to "Civil War Soldiers From Brunswick County, Virginia:" On 1 March 1862, Jesse enlisted in Coleman's Artillery and served briefly. Reported sick in April, he was discharged in July 1862 after only four months in the Army. His discharge said he was suffering from "phthisis pulmonalis" -- tuberculosis of the lungs. Confederate records described Jesse as 45 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches, tall, with dark complexion, dark hair and blue eyes. Jesse returned home and went on farming. As far as information is available, he never married. When the census was taken in 1870, he was reported as 50 years of age, living in Meherrin Township, and Martha P. Owen, age 32, was living with him as a housekeeper. In 1880, he was living in Powellton District and was a miller. His sister, Elizabeth, was living with him. No record of Jesse after 1880 has been found. |
