History of James Stapleton Lewis

About Our Family Research

We had a great time at our second James Stapleton Lewis Family Reunion in July. While we didn't have near the turn out of the year before, those of us who were able to attend had a good visit and were able to get to know each other better! We determined that we would continue to have a reunion every year in Albion for a while. It will help us be able to keep in touch better and share information and research easier. Those who can't come consistently will need to coordinate with the cousins with whom they want to visit and try to come on the same year.
I'll post the time and date here as soon as we get it set up. We interferred with several other family reunions this year, so we will have to communicate better so that all can come!

There is a history of James on this site, as well as beginning histories on all of James' children, and (hopefully soon) many of his grandchildren. We will also be including histories on Lewis ancestors and writings of Arthur K. Love, a descendant of James' brother Joel.
Researching family history is much like finding pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, and trying to decide where the pieces go. As we work together as family members, it allows us to "sit around the table together", share our pieces of the puzzle with others, and ponder together how they all fit. Please join with us in this wonderfully fun endeavor!

Some of the goals that we set at this reunion include interviewing some of the older family members to find out family stories and interesting "tidbits". We especially need information about Mary Swenson--or Anna Maria Svennson or Svennsdotter....whatever. She lived until about 1919, but we have no stories or insights into her personality! We have a few stories about Anna from the writings of her son, Wilford, but would love any other stories that people might know. I have a picture pedigree chart with a blurry picture of Anna Jones. The chart came from the records of Ellen Danner, daughter in law of Matilda Lewis Danner. We are hoping that her family members can find this picture!
Lewis Pettingill has offered to set up a site with any family pictures that cousins would like to share!

We need to correct and document our family records and send them to, and other sites under the Lewis family name so that others will know that the information is as accurate as possible. Anyone with documentation or records, please help!

The controversy still rages over the Joseph Lewis/William Guiles issue. We need some good researchers to join with Jay Flanders and Ralph Hansen on that project! (One from each side of the issue!)
I went to the FFA Convention in Louisville, KY, with my daughter in October. I discovered the Falls of the Ohio State Park there. James wrote that one of his grandfather's descendants, Isaac, was the first settler there. I have wondered if that clue might help us trace back on that line.

Jay Flanders has written some articles on the early Welsh ancestors of Sarah Lewis. They are really interesting, and he is willing to share information. In fact, he is a big reason that the first reunion was organized! Lee (Leland) Lewis has contributed many of the articles on this website. He took my request for histories on the grandchildren seriously, and write histories for each of the children of Hyrum Lewis. He also sent typed James' Journal and some other pieces by Hyrum so that they could be posted. Ralph Hansen has been helpful in Computer training and getting family members together.

Anyway, we have a lot of information available to anyone interested, and would welcome help in doing more!

  • Lewis Family Reunion, ca. 1928. (119 KB)
Ruth Fuller, descendant of Hyrum Smith Lewis, remembers going to a Lewis Reunion in about 1928. It was held in Elba at the home of Abbie Ottley, daughter of John and Weighty Lewis. This is probably a picture of that gathering. This photograph was furnished by Bernice Clark Chatburn, and was taken from the scrapbook of May and Walter Clark. This is questioned by some. Alva is in the back of the picture, and he died earlier than that. Anyone able to help?
  • Picture of the family of Alva Lewis (128 KB)
Betty Cook, who has been in contact with Alva's descendants, sent this picture. I will be adding their names and information on the picture shortly.

Contributed by Lee (Leland) Lewis.
