Notes for Armistead Morehead:

Buried in Independence Cemetery Sandyville, Jackson County, West Virginia United Methodist Church. Stones were in good condition in 1995.
Stone read Armstead Morehead Died Oct 17 1878 Aged 85 yrs 3 days. "The pride of our hearts has left us. Our dear father is dead. Beneath the sod he finds repose. There peaceful lies his bed. Vacant in heaven a place was found. An empty crown was lying there. Were turned to earth an angels eyes. In search of one the crown to wear. They fell on him we loved so well on one too good for earth." (this is the best I could read the engraving - Grace Ebneter).
The other stone read Tacy Wife of Armstead Morehead died March 24 1872 73 yrs 9 mo 4 days "Come mourning friends now cease to weep My pains and troubles now have ceased My sleeping dust lies here at rest While I recline on Jesus breast"
Copies of death record, marriage record, and Census records from Wood and Jackson Counties, VA/ WV in possession of Grace Ebneter. When Jackson County was formed in 1831, court records say that Armstead Morehead was appointed as a road surveyer. (Microfilm record Family Hy Library)

Information for this family from descendant Bonny Smith on page 120 of "Jackson County, West Virginia Past and Present 1990".
Also, information from 3 Great GD Mary in Nebraska in e mails April 2001.
Important note: 15 Aug 2003 in an e-mail from BJ Denahey:
I was recently contacted by Bonny Smith. Her name is Bonny Estep now. I sent her the new information about William Morehead's wife Mary Jones. I also sent her some census information I had found several years ago about Thomas D. and Sarah (Eaton) Morehead. She just called wanting to see if we could get together sometime. I will be passing through the general area over Labor Day so it will be dependent on any family plans that might come up for her.
I was surprised when she told me that she did not feel she had definitive proof of Thomas D.'s parentage. She had talked to a descendant of Armistead's who claimed William Oliver was the oldest child in the family. I went to your website and wondered what information was actually contained in the emails from the 3 Great GD Mary in Nebraska. I still think Thomas D. is Armistead's son and maybe since he strayed so far from Virginia information on him just wasn't passed on in the family. What do you think?

Here is the info I have on what happened to Thomas D. and Sarah (Eaton) Morehead's children.
James William Morehead died 21 Jul 1913, Douglass Co., Kansas. He was married and had a daughter Nettie.
Alexander Eaton Morehead died 15 Nov 1919 and is buried in Washington Cem., Republic Co., Kansas
Wnfield Scott Morehead died 26 Jul 1917, buried Geneva, Nebraska
Oscar F. Morehead died 4 Mar 1852
Charley Henry Morehead died 19 Apr 1854
Anna Maria Morehead died 3 Jul 1855

I still believe we have Thomas D. placed correctly as a son of Armistead but I know I am more particular about my own line, too. Considering Armistead married in Jul 1814, it would be reasonable that the first child would have been born by Nov 1815. I don't have an exact birth date for William Oliver but think it was about 1820 and I see you have 1824. The census seems to reflect an older son also.

  Notes for Rachel Vandevort:
In an e-mail from Bev Vandevort Todd dated 7 Aug 2001:
From what I have been told by older family (Vandevort) members, now deceased, Rachel (Vandevort) Morehead was previously married (?) to William John Vandevort, a cousin abt 1850. I have been unable to find a record of this marriage or a divorce record. I do find it interesting however that when she married Thos. D. Morehead, she obtained her father's permission for their marriage.
