Notes for Elizabeth Hunton: About the Hunton Family background from descendant, Jim Hunton, 23 Jan 2001 e-mail. Thomas1 Hunton (of Hunton Manor), born in England; died in Chaplery of Hunton in Hampshire County adjacent to Wiltshire County, England. He married unkown. Notes for Thomas Hunton (of Hunton Manor) Hunton Manor was located in the Chaplery of Hunton in Hampshire County, adjacent to Willshire county. The borders of Hampshire and Willshire form or did form in the lat 1600's a common border near the Hunton Manor property. The ancestral Manor home of 18 rooms, red brick with black trim, was built around 1545. In about 1890, it was partially burned and rebuilt. The Hunton family were Royalists and so family members rode in the Cavalry Corps ("Cavaliers") composed of landed gentry from this area against Cromwell until Charles I was defeated and subsequently beheaded by Cromwell. Because our ancestors supported Charles I, their Manor House and lands were confiscated as punishment by the Cromwell government, who in turn bequeathed it to General Maurice Ashley, a financial backer of Cromwell, as a reward for his loyalty to the winning side. When Charles II and his followers, after death of Oliver Cromwell, began to gain strength, Dr. Ashley successfully changed allegiance and managed to gain favor with the new government established by Charles II. Thus, when Charles II's government was accepting petitions from the loyal supporters of Charles I, our forefather, Thomas Hunton, filed a petition for the return of his confiscated Manor House and lands. He lost his appeal because ex-General Ashley's position in the new Royalist government was so well established that he was able to retain our lands grant by Cromwell. As a result, the Huntons had to settle for a lump sum settlement after many years of legal action with the government of James II; in fact, they did not actually receive their compensation until William of Orange gained the throne. With this cash settlement, Thomas Hunton, son of Thomas Hunton of Hunton Manor, immigrated to Jamestown, VA, ultimately purchasing a large tract of land in Lancaster County around 1692.
