Ancestors of Maxine Delores Hickman

      25. Mary Tompkins, born 1779 in Virginia; died 12 Mar 1862 in Kanawha County, Virginia (Source: Census Record 1860 Kanawha County, VA Family Bible published 1853 information from Susan Heil). She was the daughter of 50. William Tompkins.

Notes for Robert Childress:
Research of Kim and Steve Childress provides documentation that all the information engraved on the tombstone of Robert Childress may not be accurate. The Revolutionary service record (cited in the denied pension application) was found to apply to a different Robert Childress who also lived in Virginia. Census records of Franklin County and Kanawha County prove there were two Robert Childresses and the information given for the Kanawha County Census of 1820 matches the known family of our Robert. Furthermore, histories in the Franklin County library say that Robert Childress of Amelia and Franklin counties was the son of John Childress, born in Goochland County, VA in 1730 and who served in the Revolutionary War. This other Robert Childress was born in 1760 and died prior to 22 Nov 1836 in Franklin County.
From Mary Snodgrass Allen 5 Aug 2002:
Today I decided I would go to Chatham Courthouse, County Seat of Pittsylvania County to see if I could
find out anything about Robert Childress and Mary Tompkins. Spent several hours going thru books and found this: Early Marriage Bonds 1767-1862. Only Robert Childress listed married Polly Turley 1798. Only Mary Tompkins listed married Jessee Greggs, 9/18/1826, her father was Edward Tompkins
(Page 85). Next time I go to Richmond will stop at Amelia Court House and see what I can find out about that Robert Childress. Chatham is only a 30 minute drive from my house. Want to go back this winter and do some research on the Pauley's (Polly as it was spelled). Some family members are divided on
which Robert Childress we are descended from.

  Notes for Mary Tompkins:
Suzan Heil wrote to the "Childress Chatter Newsletter" that she located the family Bible published in 1853 in which John Wesley Conley wrote the date of death of Mary Childres as 12 March 1862. This was confirmed in correspondance with Susan who sent me a picture of a woman she identified as Mary (Tompkins) Childress taken in 1861 and photocopy of the front page of this Bible published in 1853 and the entry for death date of Mary Childress. Suzan is a descendant of the Childress family through her father, Eldridge Henick.

  Notes for Sidney Pauley:
From Mary Snodgrass Allen 20 Sep 2000:
In my e-mail, Sep 8. I asked about James Robert Dodson. Think I have figured this
out with the Childress line and my mother's Bible Daniel Pauley married Mary
Turley (not listing all children - just relevant) They had a daughter Sidney A.
Pauley who married James Childress. They had a son Larrison (Larrason) who
married Alazanah Jane Holstein. They had a daughter Sidney A. Pauley who
married James Robert Dodson. They are my mother's great grandparents. She listed 5 of
Sidney's siblings who are Daniel, Peter, Addison, Dinatha, Liona. James R. and Sidney Dodson had
these 5 children (listed in the Bible) Phillip, Bobbie, Oscar, Lura, Sidney A. (Aunt Alice).
This Bobbie I had never even heard of must have been James Robert Dodson, Jr. who married
Manerva Childress. Lura Dodson (my mother's mother) married Benjamin Franklin Snodgrass whose
mother was Mary A. George (born 1857). Only thing my mother listed on Mary A. George is a brother
Warren. Do not know if this is the same who married Florence Viola Childress.

  Notes for Mary E. Williams:

Mary William's Will lists children, William, Elizabeth, Lisa, John H., James F, D C (Davis Colombus), Catherine, and Parthenia
From Wayne Williams 16 Aug 2002: " I was browsing your webpage and came across the RR carpenter crew photo. Do you know anything more about the photo such as others in the photo or when or where it was taken. Supposedly one of my Williams ancestors, either Franklin or Layton, is in the photo. They lived in the Sproul area and were carpenters for the C&O and prior to that the Brier Creek railroad."
Wayne was writing in reference to a picture I found which identified my Great Grandfather Childress and also Layton Williams. It would seem likely that Mary is connected to this Williams family.
From Wayne Williams 17 Aug 2002: " Layton and Fannie are my Great Grandparents. Fannie ran a boarding house/restaraunt/hotel for the railroaders in Sproul. Bill Williams(my Grandfather), one Layton and Fannie's sons, was born in Sproul. He wrote several historical articles for the local paper and magazines and had many of his photos published."

I just spoke with my mother, (who is Dora JohnsonHarvey, granddaughter of Charles Watson Johson)

the list because she had heard that we were distantly related to him. I told her no but at the bottom of
the page it lists Davis Colombus Tyler's death reported by G.W. Tyler. The information that she gave me is that Garfield Tyler was married to Flora Johnson. She said that their son lives near me. His name is Forest Tyler.
