Conrad and Mathias Young

This part is taken from Campbells History of Nicholas County in 1883 before Browns History of Nicholas County. The numbers at the start of each sentence/paragraph is the number of the "letter" in his writings.
"Campbell possessed an extraordinary memory for names and facts about the earliest inhabitants of Nicholas County, and some sixty years following his days as a travelling justice, he wrote down his reminiscences of the early settlers and the way in which they lived. Campbells memoirs have always been held in high esteem by historians, and where validation is possible he has seldom been found in error in any of his remarks."

1. The first settlement on Peters Creek and at Kesslers Cross Lanes, then in Kanawha County was made by Henry Morris, Conrad Young and Edward McClung. They made the start in 1792. Morris built a cabin near where William B. Summers now resides and Young built near where Robert Neil now lives.
3.      ..........The Indians were watching a path that led from Morris's cabin to Young's cabin and it is supposed that when night approached they intended to attack and destroy both families. Young was better prepared than Morris as he had two or three sons with guns ready for defense.
4.      ........Before midnight Mathias Young, who had traveled eight miles in the dark through the woods came to McClungs cabin and told of the massacre of the Morris children. .....The next day all of the families left for the fort on the Kanawha River at the mouth of Hughes Creek.
6.      Edward McClung remained in the Kanawha Valley and sold his land to Edward Hughes and John Campbell. Morris and Young stayed in Kanawha the remainder of the year 1792, and in 1793 they returned with their families to their homes on Peters Creek.
9.      Henry Young made some improvements on Laurel Creek near Bethel Church.
10.       Thomas Smith married a daughter of Conrad Young.
12.      Thomas Smith settled on the Hughes improvement, Edward Hughes settled on the John D. Grove improvement........Henry Young settled at the places named.
14.      .....Thomas Smith, he having moved to Twenty-Mile.
24.      There were some marriages between the family of Henry Morris's family and that of Conrad Young, but I can't remember all of them now.
25.      Conrad Young, one of the pioneer settlers, had three wives and all had children. I have mentioned three, Mathias, Henry, and Thomas Smiths wife. His son Charles was a good woodsman a daring adventurer, and one of the best marksmen of the day..... I think he married a daughter of Henry Morris. His father took up on land on Peters Creek, and he and his wife did not live long after the death of their parents. Their children moved to Elk River and did not return.
40.      Jonathan Dunbar.......bought land on Laurel Creek from Mathias Young.
44.      About the year 1809 Samuel Neil........bought out Conrad Young

Land Tax Record, Nicholas County, 1818

Mathias Young; Residence, Nicholas: Acres, 47; On Peters Creek
Mathias Young & Joseph Pierson: Residence, Nicholas; Acres, 200; Smith Branch of Peters Creek.

From Browns History of Nicholas County

Conrad Young came to Peters Creek about 1791 and built his cabin just above Morris on what was later known as the "Neil Place". He had three grown sons at the time of the settlement: Mathias, Charles, and Henry. Conrad Young was married three times and had several other children but no record of them is found in Nicholas County.

I looked in Braxton Deaths from 1853-1920 and found no deaths that listed Mathias Young as the father. I looked in 1860 Census of Braxton, Clay, Calhoun, Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Mason, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Randolph, Ritchie, Upshur, and Wirt Counties (which is all the 1860 Census Records our library has) and Bazel Young was not in any of those.

Most records indicate that the parents of Bazel Young were Matthias and
Millie Holiday Young. Bazel had a brother, John, in addition to his sister,
Emilia... Matthias'
brother, Charles Frances is my 5th g-grandfather and 5th g-grand uncle.

Conrad's father, Hans Mattheus Jung, immigrated to PA from Germany in the
early 1700s. Conrad was married twice. His oldest son, by his first marriage,
John Young, was the famous frontiersman of Kanawha Co.

In an email 5 Jun2001 Susan Bail Adams writes:
Conrad had 3 wives and all had children. He mentions Matthias, Henry, a daughter who married Thomas Smith and Charles, who married one of Henry Morris' daughters. That would be Sarah.

From "Early Court Records of Kanawha County 1789-1803" published by West Virginia Genealogical Society, page 67 at Court held for Kanawha County 12th June 1798:
"Ordered that Conrad Young for the future be exempted from the payment of any county and parish levies on account of his age and infirmity."

From "The Strength of Our People" by Norva Balser Warner page 58:
Conrad Mahue Young and Elizabeth Young were the parents of:
Charles Francis, Elizabeth, Mathias, and Henry Young
