Notes for John Hance Bird: "The reservoir was dragged last Thursday for the body of John Bird, but it was not found until dynamite was exploded. Justice Campbell was called to view the body in capacity of Coroner. A bottle of whiskey was found in Bird's clothing, and this fact coupled with his intoxicated condition on the Saturday evening previous, left no room to doubt of anything but that it was a case of accidental drowning. He was nearly sixty years of age, and was buried Saturday morning...". from The Stanhope Eagle Wednesday, October 15, 1890 |

Notes for William R. Bird: Was the first burial in Joseph Bird's family plot. From a Sussex County newspaper: "DROWNED--About 9 o'clock on Saturday evening, the 2d inst., while the late storm was at its height, William Bird, aged about 21 years, son of Joseph Bird, fell into Bagot's Lock, on the Morris Canal, between Waterloo and Hackettstown, and was drowned. In company with his brothers, John and Welch Bird, he set out to cross the canal on a foot bridge near his father's house, but, making a misstep, he fell into the lock, which had at the time only about 6 feet water in it. Welch plunged in after him, and John shouted for help. Their father and mother heard the cry, and the latter reached the lock first--Mr. Bird lingering behind long enough to light a lantern and procure a pole: The boys in the lock could not get out by climbing--it being smoothly planked on all sides. The pole brought by the father was the only means by which they could be rescued. But William, who was badly bruised by the fall, was beyond succor when his father arrived. Welch had barely strength enough to take a firm grasp of the pole, and he was thus drawn out of the lock. The body of William was rescued from the water by procuring a small boat from the Musconetcong; launching it upon the canal, and floating it into the lock." Notes for Morris Trimmer Bird: Lock Tender at Lock 2 (Later Lock 4) West March1860 to 1 Apr 1888. Level Tender from 1 Apr 1888 to 10 Dec 1891. Lock Tender from 10 Dec 1891 In Service This information from a notebook written apparently between 1903-1916 by James Powers, the last supervisor of the Middle Division of the Morris Canal, which encompassed the portion from Ledgewood to the Guinea Hollow lock, west of Waterloo. Description of the Morris Canal west of Waterloo by Robert R. Goller: "Not very far west of Waterloo, the canal joined with the Musconetcong River at a lift lock, Lock 4 West. This was a place locally known as Guinea Hollow, where Morris Bird lived and worked as lock tender for many years, probably right up to the time he died, and where Welch Bird lived and worked as lock tender before him. (Originally, for reasons too complicated to explain here, this lock was known in earlier times-probably when Welch was there-as Lock 2 West) Boats heading west locked into the Musconetcong at Lock 4 West and continued in the slackwater navigation of the dammed river for a mile to the guard lock at Saxton Falls, Lock 5 West (originally unnumbered). There the canal and river separated again, and boats locked back into the canal." Further information from Bob Goller: Elsie Claus ran a tavern at Guinea Hollow on the Musconetcong River in the 1960's and 1970's known as Claus's Inn. The property at the present time, 1997, is for sale - $225,000 with liquor license, $175, 000 without. The structure is posted as being unsafe and there is no city water or sewerage. Morris was listed as a grocer in the 1870 Census living in Amy Bird's household with his brother John Hance Bird (farmer) and Annie Morgan (domestic servant) See 1874 Beers Atlas of Warren County -- source Bob Goller Mentioned in "Tales and Towns of Northern New Jersey" by Henry Charlton Beck, chapter five, page 106 (Published by Rutgers University Press Copyright 1983) Died of angina pectoris at age 70yrs 8 months and 13 days |
