Speech made by John Burris Clemens at a family reunion in 1908:

I joined up in 1862 and was sworn in Co. "K" Regiment for 12 months and discharged in less than that. On March 26, 1863 I was recruited to the 3rd Arkansas Infantry. I was sent to fight at Gettysburg. In this battle July 3, 1863, I was literally blown to strings by a bombshell. It passed through my knee, through my thigh, it passed my mouth and burned it causing all my teeth to be lost. I woke up after being wounded and heard water running. I crawled over and washed my face. I hardly had lip left. Flies were everywhere and they had laid eggs in my wounds. I tried to wash out all the worms. I heard a horse going by and didn't know if it was a friend or enemy. It was a friend. He rescued me, but we were captured two days later. My enemy took me to a hospital tent to care for my wounds.

I was paroled to Richmond, November 20, 1863. On my way home, I was captured a second time and my enemy released me. They gave me a mule to get home on. I got home on December 23, 1863.
