ANE ESTHER BRACY:

Jane Esther Bracy was born in Aug. 1839 to Solomon Bracy, Jr. and Esther Bracy, a slave woman. She may have possibly had a twin sister, Ellen Bracy.
They were born on the Bracy farm possibly who was owned by Solomon Bracy, Jr.,the son of Solomon and Betsy Heacock Bracy. His mother and father were originally from Hartford, Connecticut. She was a house slave and a cook for the slave master and his wife, Mildred Williams Bracy. She was raised in the first slave house on the plantation and was given the hand-me-downs from the master. The truth of the matter is that Solomon Bracy was Jane Esther Bracy's father. The census of 1840 shows two female black girls living on the plantation with many younger slave boys. One female black lived on the plantation. Her name possibly could be Esther. She was also a house slave. In 1850, the Slave Schedule of North Carolina gives the age of a black lady at 42 years old. That was Esther Bracy. She had a son older than the twin girls. His name is Henry Luke Bracy. In 1849, Solomon had an affair with his slave and a white woman named Mary Braddy. Two children were born: Willis Bracy and William Braddy.
In 1855, Jane had her first son by Ned Ellis. His name was William Daniel Bracy. He was born in 1855. She married William Daniel Bracy in 1857. They had a daughter by the name of Bettie. In 1861, another daughter was born, Harriett. In January 1862, Jacob Bracy was born. In 1866, William Daniel Bracy was born. He was the first child born free. Mary Magdalene Bracy was born in May 1872. Isaac Bracy was born in 1873. Jobe Bracy was born in 1878. Betty Bracy had the first grandchild, Sarah but had to leave the plantation. In the 1880's, Daniel and Jacob left the Bracy farm for Portsmouth, Virginia, a small town in southeastern Virginia.
In 1893, Solomon Bracy died. The will was probated that year. Because of the death of his wife, and no male heirs, Solomon left all the land to his daughter, Jane Bracy. His illegitimate son, Bill Braddie contested the will. The lawyers in charge of the case coerced the land and right to the land for Jane who was given all the land because of the death of his wife and the non location of an heir. She was told to leave the land. She lived with her son Moses. She moved to Portsmouth, Virginia where she lived with her son, Daniel. She died in Portsmouth, Virginia in September 1901. She was buried in Lincoln Cemetery in Portsmouth.
She lived in North Carolina with her son, Moses, according to the 1900 Census of North Carolina. She was also counted in the 1900 Virginia Census of Portsmouth with her son, Daniel. Her name is also included in the death certificate of Bettie Bracy Davis.
