Notes for BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DAVIS:
Ben was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was the youngest of ten children. He was educated in the Portsmouth School System and later entered the United States Air Force. After his discharge, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he was employed, for many years, by the United States Postal Service. After leaving the Post Office, he returned to Portsmouth where he was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a warehouseman. He retired from there after many years of dedicated service.
"Doc" as he was affectionately known was popular throughout his neighborhood and the City of Portsmouth. He was a unique individual who had many friends and acquaintances. He sat around telling stories about the past and his experiences. He sometimes like to sing, and one of his favorite songs was "Open My Eyes" which he always sung at family gatherings.
He had an usual way with the younger family members too. he always gave advice and help when needed. Everybody knew him as Uncle Ben.
He was a member of St. Mark Missionary Church on Columbus Avenue in Portsmouth. He was also a member of the Beacon Light Elks Lodge NO> 34 I.B.P.O.E. of Washington.
On May 6, 1996, at his home at 43 Manley Street in Portsmouth, Ben had a massive heart attack, where he was pronounced dead by the paramedics. Nannie, his sister, and Melva James, his neice, was at the house before he died sitting on the front porch.
His funeral was held at St. Mark Missionary Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was buried in Lincoln Cemetery on Saturday, May 11, 1996 at 4:30 P.M. Roger's Funeral Home was the Funeral service in charge.
