She was the daughter of Sarah Mitchell and Joseph Demory. She was born in August 1849 in Occoneeche Neck, North Carolina. She was born a free-woman. She lived a prospered in the area of Jackson, North Carolina.
She met George Rawls, a slave on the Lockhart farm. They wanted to get married to each other. The slavemaster, Benjamin Franklin Lockhart said that if Adriana married George Rawls, by law she would become a slave. If they had any children, they would become slaves. She decided to have a secret wedding and never to tell the slavemaster, and keep all parties silent. They had a daughter, Sarah Demory in 1865.
