LADYS MUNGO:

Gladys Mungo was born on April 8, 1917 in Flat Creek, South Carolina. She was the youngest child of Joe and Ellie. She was raised in Flat Creek, South Carolina on a farm. According to the Census of South Carolina-Lancaster (Flat Creek Township), she was three years old.
She married Gonzalo McDow, the son of James Thomas "Doc" McDow and Daisey Huey McDow, on August 24, 1934 in Lancaster, South Carolina. They had six children: Jimmie, Nettie, Joseph, Richard Lee, Patsy Anne, and Norma Jean McDow.
Three of the children, Jimmie, Nettie, and Joseph were born in Lancaster, South Carolina. Jimmie and Nettie were raised by Daisey and Doc. Joseph was raised by Ellen and Joseph Mungo.
They moved to New York City in 1943. Richard, Patsy, and Norma Jean were born in Brooklyn, New York. While Gonzalo worked on the Brooklyn Docks, she worked as a care giver. They were well-known in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, New York. She lived in New York until the death of her husband. They went to Lancaster, South Carolina where Gonzalo was buried at Crossroads Baptist Church in Lancaster, South Carolina. She returned to New York. Her son convinced her to leave New York to return home to South Carolina because " New York was not the place to live anymore without family around you".
In the early 1980's, Gladys moved back to South Carolina with her son, Joseph McDow. After a short stay in South Carolina, she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where she lives today. She had moved there to be closer to her sister, Maymie Orr. They lived to the same senior community but in separate buildings. She lives about four or five blocks away from Ericson Stadium where the Carolina Panthers play football. She says "I know when they are playing in the stadium because I can't sleep that day".
She gave me a picture of my great grandparents in 1996 during the time her brother, Boag Mungo, died whom they say I look like in the face. A group picture of her brother, two sisters, and aunt Francis, along with her Neice, Alma and Evelyn are included in the family tree.
She is always concerned with the welfare of her children and grandchildren. She is the only surviving child of Ellen and Joe Mungo. Her sister, Idella and Maymie, died recently.
