Margaret: Her surname may have been Seyll. In her will two bequests are to Seyll's. She is listed on the rolls as "Uxor Helmhirst" and Margareta Helmehirst".

(5) William Elmhirst born 1480, married Agnes Hall, died Jul 26 1577, buried: Worsborough, York. William died 1560. He was the youngest son, but heir. He was admitted tenant to the ancestral holdings of Bank Top (or Elmhirst) and Houndhill in 1551.

Agnes: She was of Darfield, Yorks and the daughter of ____ Hall of Smithley, a farm at the east end of Worsbroughdale. (In the parish of Darfield).

Margaret: She was the relict of Charles Jenkinson of Slade Hooton, Nee Bentley. She died s.p.

Elizabeth: Daughter of William Thornton of Thronton and Tyers-hall (Tyersal?), gentleman. She was the relic of Mark Foxcroft of Kirstal, near Leeds. Through her mother, half her blood was that of the great house of Tempest, that had honored itself at Agincourt and had captured Henry VI after the Battle of Towton. From the Tempests in their turn through the Hollands and the Le Zouches, she had Alfred and Charlemagne among her ancestors. Through her father she descended from the lines of Vavasours,Gascoignes and Mowbrays.

Richard died 1654, buried: Oct 31 1654, St Helen's Church, York. Of Houndhill, gentleman. He was the eldest son and heir. He acted as agent to the Earl of Stafford in collecting recusant's rents for the Crown. In other matters connected with the Presidency of the North, he fortified Houndshill for Charles I, and kept 40 soldiers in arms to defend it. Then he surrendered and took the Covenant. He was the first to use Arms as at present borne.

Margaret: Daughter and co-heiress of Richard Micklethwaite, of Swaithe Hall, Worsbroughdale.

Elizabeth: Daughter of Thomas Waite of Haxby, near York.

By his will dated 1702, he left his estates to his nephew William Elmhirst, eldest son of Thomas Elmhirst of Boston. (He inherited Elmhirst on the marriage of his niece).

6. Thomas Elmhirst (son of Richard Elmhirst and Elizabeth Waite) born 1649, married Jan 05 1685, Ann Boulton, born 1661, died Feb 23 1694, buried: Boston Church. Thomas died Feb 2 1697, buried: Boston Church. Of Boston co, Lincolnshire. Merchant and alderman. There are brasses in the Boston Church on the north side of the chancel in his and his wife's memory. They are placed so high that they are impossible to decipher without a ladder or the aid of field glasses. **All living Elmhirsts are descended from this man.***

(3) William Elmhirst baptized: Dec 29 1721, Worsborough, York, married Oct 20 1757, in Tankersley, York, Elizabeth Wordsworth, died May 1804. William died Jul 1773, buried: Jul 19 1773, Worsborough, York. Resided first at Elmhirst, and afterwards at Genn House, purchased Ouslethwaite of Mr. Hammersley 1769. Surg. Apothecary and an early practitioner in smallpox inoculation. He died from a fall from his horse near Hangman-stone toll-bar. He is buried in Worsborough in the aisle between the porch door and the north door.

Elizabeth: Daughter of John Wordsworth of Hermit Hill, Tankersley. Died aged 66.

An attorney of his majesty's court of King's Bench at Westminster, owner of Ouslethwaite(60 acres), copyholder of Elmhirst and Genn House. He purchased Round Green in Worsborough for 5000 pounds in 1801. He inherited estates in Fishlake, Hatfield and Thorne on the death of his distant cousin, Mordecai Cutts, a descendant of Elizabeth Elmhirst, younger sister of Richard Elmhirst of Houndhill.

Ann: Only daughter and heiress of Thomas of Stixwould, Lincolnshire. William Elmhirst's second cousin. (See 1952 edition Elmhirst of West Ashby).

[1] William Elmhirst born Oct 27 1791, buried: Mar 30 1799. He grew ill while at boarding school as did his brother Thomas, who died 12 days before him. Family tradition says that both boys were lost in Wombell Wood, and were overfed on their return. It is more probable that they drank contaminated water and died of cholera or typhoid, both of which were then endemic.

[2] Thomas Elmhirst born Jun 22 1793, buried: Mar 18 1799, Worsborough, York. He was named after his grandfather.

[3] Robert Elmhirst born Dec 10 1794, and Sarah Baxter, born Mar 04 1804. Robert died Dec 02 1835, Round Green, York, buried: Worsborough, York. He was of Ouslethwaite and enlarged the house at Round Green. He had natural issue by Sarah Baxter, an eldest son Henry Baxter-Elmhirst. He inherited all of his father's Yorkshire property and died unmarried.

Sarah: She was living with Robert in 1831 when she was 25 and he 37. A grand-daughter of hers in 1941, said her brother was a brewer at Thornton-le-moor, Northallerton. She went to Sheffield after Robert's death. In the 1851 census, as Mrs. Sarah Jennings, of Tickhill, she stated she was born at Richmond, in Yorkshire.

On Mar 16, 1825 he petitioned for 200 acres of land, indicating he lived in Hamilton (township?), had a family of a wife and one daughter and had resided in the province for nearly 2 years.(Arrived mid 1823, a year after Joseph). Of interest, on March 1, 1825, Joseph is petetioning for 200 acres of land in Otonabee.

He was a Lieutenant in the navy with Lord Nelson at Trafalgar and was granted 1,000 acres of land as a retired naval officer. The "Family" properties were concession 3, lots 23, 24, 25 and concession 1, lot 29 in Otonabee Township. He supposedly willed $500 for a tombstone, but the lawyer (Lightburne) ran off with the money. At the time of the 1839 Otonabee census, he was living with his brother Joseph.

His final will was dated July 1, 1865.

Ann: In the 1851 census, it appears that her brother Thomas, a labourer, is living with them. His age is 37, born in England. They are living in a hewed, one one, one family, frame house.

The History of Peterborough says his mother was a daughter of a sea captain, Richardson by name, who sailed his own ship in the West Indies trade. (P. 758). He was reeve of the united municipalities of Anstruther, Burleigh and Chandos. He was know as "Big Frank". He and his wife and daughters went to Manitoba in 1893, following their sons, John and William, who had preceded them. Richard and James went on to Keremeos, British Columbia.

Jane: She died aged 60 years, 10 months. In the 1881 census, living with her are her children James, Hannah, Tom, Joseph Robert and Agnes. Her son Henry, his wife Rachel, and their children Caroline and Joseph H. As well, Mary Tucker, the daughter of her oldest daughter Margaret. In the 1851 census a Merrin Steele, aged 20, born in Scotland, is living with the family in the inn.

He moved to Los Angeles where he lived until 3 months prior to his death, when he returned home. He died aged 55, 2 months. Cemetery records show that Agnes E. died April 19, 1915 age 47 years 4 months. Anne Barr is from Connell family tree book. (Agnes (Anne) Barr???).

John died Jan 8 1879. He owned concession 3, lot 23 in Otonabee. (The land was settled in 1852). He also owned concession 3, E 1/2 lot 5,6 in Asphodel, (Land settled in 1823), and concession 5, East 1/2 lot 7 (Land settled in 1850). He was willed, by PJ Elmhirst, 200 acres in concession 1, lot 29 Otonabee. When he was 21 years old he bought lot 5, concession 3 in Asphodel. He died aged 60.

He lived at 109 West Oneida, Oswego, New York. He had moved to Oswego around 1874 and was employed as a toll-gate keeper on the Oswego Boulevard just outside the city. He later worked at the Oswego Machine Works, as a machinist then at Long's Candy Works as a watchman.

He owned property in Otonabee, concession 3 lot 22.(Land settled in 1823) When he was coming to Canada with his father and brothers and the Lieutenant, the sailing vessel they were on was shipwrecked coming up the St. Lawrence. Philip was thrown out but was caught by a sailor who swam to shore with him on his back. In the 1851 census, his mother and a James Steele, carpenter, born in Scotland, aged 22, were living with them. He was known as "uncle Phil".

Christina: She died aged 35 years.

Jane: In the 1881 Otonabee census, living with them are Arthur, William H., Francis, Frederick, Alfred, John and a Jessie Gilbert aged 11.

Joseph: He resided in Parry Sound, Ontario. In the 1854 census he lived on the west half of lot 16, concession 5, Asphodel.

[B] Joseph Elmhirst (son of Philip William Elmhirst and Christina Campbell) born 1849, married Jane West, born 1849, died Apr 13 1941, buried: Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough, Ont. Joseph died Nov 03 1907. Known as "Big Joe". In the 1881 census, a Henry Crikshank, aged 23 was living with them.

[C] Philip (Phil) James Elmhirst (son of Philip William Elmhirst and Christina Campbell) born Feb 11 1850, married Sep 23 1868, in Wesleyan Methodist Church, Asphodel, Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane Comstock, born Dec 15 1847, (daughter of John Schooley Comstock and Eliza Harrison). Philip died Jul 16 1921, buried: Jul 18 1921, Clanricarde private burial ground,Apsley. He was over 300 pounds in weight and was known as "Big Phil". He owned lot 38 on concessions 10&11 in Anstruther Township. (Settled in 1870) Living with them in the 1901 Burleigh and Anstruther census are grandsons Roy E. Bullied (Dec 11, 1895) and Milton Bullied (Apr 9, 1897). Phil was the postmaster at Clanricarde from April 1, 1894 until his death in 1921.

Elizabeth: Aged 21 at time of marriage.

[D] Christina Elmhirst (daughter of Philip William Elmhirst and Christina Campbell) married John Wells. Had 2 boys & 2 girls. A picture taken in Saginaw, Michigan around 1897 shows a girl about 12, a girl 9, a boy 7 and a boy about 4.
