The Gene R Fanton's of Wellsville, NY

Updated August 11, 2001

About Our Family Research

My Uncle Carl Fanton wrote a book of The Fanton Family History and this was published in 1935, he spent at least a full year in his research of doing this book and you can imagin the work he put into this, with out the use of the computer. He starts with early Fanton history untill 1935 where I am about the last entry made. There are many Fanton's in Allegany County, NY. The 2000 phone book shows about 40 different Fanton's.In my last research a in 1998 I found only about 250 Fanton' total with phone nunbers in the United States, I found 16 Fanton's in France with E mail addresses.I feel our Fanton name is rare, as far as surnames go.I have coresponded with a Fanton in Croita and one in Canada. For anyone's interest, I am going to try and paste in a little Fanton History from the Fanton History Book.
It has been conclued that originally the Fantons were a French family, although we
know definitely that two of our name emigrated from England not long after 1800.
Records show sthat there were Fantons in France early in the 17th century, and
that there were Huguenots; hence, it is probable that some of them settled to England
during the Huguenot emigrations, later comiing to America.

Jeanne Fanton married Nicolas Perree De La Villestreux, who was born about 1600,
and was captain of a french warship under King Louis XIV. His
brother pierre was the Kings secretary.

Rachel Fanton and Elizabeth Fanton, sisters, left the Isle of Re,France,
in 1685 and emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina. Rachel married Isacc
Cailleboeuf, son of Louis and Marie (Charuyer) Cailleboeuf, born at Sainte
Soline, France. Elizabeth was the wife of Daniel Garnier, a merchant, son of
Daniel and Marie (Chevallier) Garnier.

The male ancestors in this book, from whom all Fantons in America have
decended, were undoubtedly from England. Simon and Clark F;anton, brothers,
were born in London; however, in the case of jonathan of Fairfield and William of
Stratford there is nothing but tradition and customs to hear out this statement.

Under order dated November 30,1675, 28 young men of Ipswich, Massachusetts
were impressed for service in King Phillip’s War. Among these was according
to state records, in Major Appleton’s Company, Narragansett Campaign,
and on August 24, 1676 was paid the equivalent of about $30 for serving under
Captain Brocklebank of Rowley Massachusetts. He was listed as a Commoner
and resident of Ipswich in the l;ocal census of 1677-78, and was probably born
about 1650.

Some time between 1678 and 1688 he removed to Fairfield Connecticut,
and in the latter year married Mehitabel Staples daughter of Thomas Staples.
She died about 1691, and he married (2nd) wife Sarah Hide, daughter of John
and Elizabeth (Harvey) Hide of Fairfield, who was born 25 July 1672.
Johnathan died in 1714; Sarah, his widow, married (2nd) Will Hill and died at
Greenfield 29 September 1760.
