THOMAS PLOGGER was born in Virginia, and was a son of John and Martha (Morris) Plogger, both of whom were also natives of Virginia. Thomas was reared on a farm, and received his education in the district schools of his native state. He came to Greene county, Ill., in 1857, and located on section 28, Rockbridge township, where he still resides, owns 80 acres of land, and carries on general farming. In 1863, Thomas Plogger and Mary Coonrod were united in marriage. By their marriage four children were born to them - Martha V., wife of Edward Kimbro of Greenfield; John H., at home; Charles T., died at the age of seven years; and William, who died in infancy. Mrs. Plogger died in the month of October, 1872, and Mr. Plogger was again married in September, 1874, to Sarah Crawford, a native of this state. By this marriage they have had five children born to them - Oscar, died in infancy; Lincoln died in infancy; Rosa H., Howard and Virgil at home. Mr. Plogger enlisted in the 91st Ill. Inf. In August, 1862, and served his country three years. He participated in the siege of Mobile, Ala., but had previously taken a part in the Mississippi campaign. He has held the offices of road supervisor and school director of his district, and gave entire satisfaction. Mr. and Mrs. Plogger are consistent members of the M.E. church. Notes for MINNIE BELLE SMITH: Notes from Lonnie Riley Floyd: Aunt Minn was the sweetest thing, but being a big woman in those days they didn't bathe like we do today. She would always have a smell to her. Grandma would help Minn into the washtub and help her wash. Later on Aunt Minn and uncle George lived in the Hackings area of Hogback mountain. Minn smoked a pipe, but only after the men had gone to bed. Lonnie remembers that they would keep buckets of fresh water on the front porch. She can remember that when she stayed up there that bears would come down and walk on the porch at night and drink water from the buckets. Lonnie says that she can remember seeing bears all over the mountain. More About GEORGE PLOGGER and MINNIE SMITH: Marriage: October 1903 Children of GEORGE PLOGGER and MINNIE SMITH are: i. LONNIE MAE5 RILEY (ROSA LILLIE4 PLOGGER, ALICE BAKER3, WILLIAM PAXTON2, JOHN WILLIAM1) was born Private. She married JOSEPH WILLIAM FLOYD Private, son of JAMES FLOYD and MARY SOUTHERS. He was born June 13, 1916 in Rockbridge Co, VA, and died November 19, 2003 in Buena Vista, VA. Notes for JOSEPH WILLIAM FLOYD: November 25, 2003 Know as Grandaddy Joe by all of his grandchildren and Joe by friends and family. He was retired from Reeves Bros. in Buena Vista VA. He was always tinkering in his workshop / garage. He at one tine worked for a Chevrolet dealership as a mechanic. He was also a welder. He worked for a cup factory in Buena Vista years ago. I think he was a maintenance technician for the cup factory. He always told me stories about repairing the cup machine that inserted the bottoms in to the paper cups and how he learned to weld aluminum there. He later worked at Reeves Bros. in Buena Vista. I am not sure of his position, but I assume it was in maintenance as well. He talked about working with engineers and building equipment for production there. I always saw him in blue work pants, blue work shirt, and blue hat. It was his uniform. The only time he dressed differently was when he went to church. He planted a garden every year and I remember his growing corn, green beans, strawberries, cantalope and so on. He would work in his garage and repair washers and dryers, then he switched for repairing lawn mowers and tractors. As a child I remember his wearing his dress blues and he would have grease under his nails. He would rinse the grease from his hands with gasoline and I remember his eating wintergreen lifesavers. I can still smell the gas and lifesavers. He was a rather small man physically, but he had a big heart and you could count on him. He always had a story to tell and enjoyed telling story after story after story when company visited. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed hearing and telling good jokes. In 2003, grandaddy Joe got sick. The doctors said that he had cancer on his lungs and he had had a heart attack that damaged a good portion of his heart. Earlier the previous year he had a stroke in the garage while working. All of this didn't slow him down much. He continued to go to work in his garage as long as he could. When the time was close for him to be called to heaven he talked with all of his children about going to heaven. He told them that he was a saved man and that he wanted all of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on to become saved because he wanted them to meet him in heaven when their time came. We all loved grandaddy Joe and I will miss him until I see him again. Troy Floyd Joe worked for Decker Chevrolet in Buena Vista, VA for some time and then worked at the local cup factory in maintenance until he was employed by Reeves Brothers as a maintenance tech. there in town. Joe was a small man in stature. He was probably about 5'7" or 5'8" and weighed in at a massive 110lbs soaking wet. Joe went to church regurally and participated in church activities. He played the guitar and several other instruments. Joe was a big Nascar fan. When Joe was younger and his sons adults, they went in together and built a race car and raced it out at Natural Bridge raceway. It was a dirt track. Obit. from Rockbridge Weekly: Joseph W.
